| Top 20 Cult Of Luna Tracks
This is my personal ranking of the last five major releases by Cult of Luna. The thing about this rband is that they produce coherent albums, and therefore tracks don't stand on their own as rwell as other bands. Doesn't include EPs. Feel free to comment! | 1 | | Cult of Luna Somewhere Along the Highway
"FINLAND" --- This track is what got me into the band, and it never fails to send shivers down my
spine when the climax kicks in not once, but twice. It goes from being absolutely
beautiful to transition into one of the heaviest sections on the entire album. A
masterpiece worthy of all praise. | 2 | | Cult of Luna Salvation
"ECHOES" --- Easily one of the greatest album openers in post metal. The first five minutes silently
enter your body with ease, pulsing with bass and soundscape. And then, everything
deteriorates, which subtly -- again -- begins to build in a way that perfects musical
climax. | 3 | | Cult of Luna Somewhere Along the Highway
"DARK CITY, DEAD MAN" --- I had a hard time with these next two. Depending on preference, they could be shifted
around. This track gets to business somewhat slowly, dragging you through the thick
before finally unleashing. The bass lines here are probably the most fitting Johansson has
written, and that's only to lead up to the drony, yet epic six-minute conclusion to their
best album. | 4 | | Cult of Luna Somewhere Along the Highway
"DIM" --- Dim and Dark City, Dead Man make for what is still the grandest 25 minutes CoL has
recorded on an LP (even with Vicarious Redemption). The soothing nature of the
build-up is perfect for any mood, only broken to lead into a noisey ensemble of
instruments and vocals. Which then leads fittingly into #3... | 5 | | Cult of Luna Salvation
"VAGUE ILLUSIONS" --- The percussion and droning guitar make for a damn great combination throughout in
this one. The vocals join in after the intermission to blend in for one of their best
climaxes, and not to mention that breathtaking afterglow... | 6 | | Cult of Luna Vertikal
"MUTE DEPARTURE" --- Easily my favorite track off of Vertikal, maybe because it doesn't have as much of an
industrial feel as the rest. The vocals make this song, and the main riff is heart-
pounding. Haunting. | 7 | | Cult of Luna Salvation
"LEAVE ME HERE" --- This one cuts to the chase. It uses the same formula throughout, save for a soft
melody near the middle with rewarding background vocals. Tops off the great opening
triplet on Salvation. | 8 | | Cult of Luna Salvation
"CROSSING OVER" --- Just a beautiful atmosphere. You feel like there's something more to be said, but the
message is revealed at the end with the refrain: "One step, one glimpse of an eye,
One moment can change everything". | 9 | | Cult of Luna Eternal Kingdom
"ETERNAL KINGDOM" --- The guitar sings away throughout, with the drums keeping the tempo up for a well-
paced tune. Very accessible to non-CoL fans, especially due to the shivering beginning
and end. | 10 | | Cult of Luna Somewhere Along the Highway
"AND WITH HER CAME THE BIRDS" --- Haunting, depressing, but focussed with intent. Persson has a story to tell here. | 11 | | Cult of Luna Salvation
"WAITING FOR YOU" --- This one gives you a rest from the intense trio that came prior. Slow build- up and
drones along quietly, but the end climaxes with so much energy that you seem to
forget about those six minutes. | 12 | | Cult of Luna Eternal Kingdom
"OWLWOOD" --- Probably the most accessible track along with Eternal Kingdom. The guitars chugging
away make for a dark feel, but somehow it remains optimistic. | 13 | | Cult of Luna Vertikal
"I: THE WEAPON" --- They don't waste any time setting the mood here. Energy-packed and ready to go. | 14 | | Cult of Luna Salvation
"ADRIFT" --- Pretty consistent track in comparison to the rest of the album. The bass and the
vocals take precedence here, with the guitar humming its heavy tune in the
background. | 15 | | Cult of Luna Eternal Kingdom
"GHOST TRAIL" --- It does have an eerie start to it, which would probably explain the name. But
everything unravels very nicely. | 16 | | Cult of Luna Vertikal
"PASSING THROUGH" --- An absolute gem to see live. The droning guitar pushes you along, with the soothing,
echoed vocals whispering away. | 17 | | Cult of Luna Eternal Kingdom
"MIRE DEEP" --- Bass pedal starts it off well, guitar pretty consistent throughout, but the pulsing end
is really what makes this track a good one. | 18 | | Cult of Luna Salvation
"INTO THE BEYOND" --- Closing out Salvation, it's a little disjointed at times, but it keeps you mesmerized.
Turn the bass up! | 19 | | Cult of Luna Somewhere Along the Highway
"MARCHING TO THE HEARTBEATS" --- Brief opener for Somewhere Along the Highway, but extremely haunting. | 20 | | Cult of Luna The Beyond
"ARRIVAL" --- Crushing addition to the band's first coherent effort, but really foreshadows what
they accomplish later. Six minutes in is gold. | |

03.05.14 | Fixed the album art and some omissions from last time. I'll delete the older one in a few days to preserve comments. | Shuyin
03.06.14 | into the beyond at 18? thats one of their best songs ever | ericleb010
03.06.14 | As I wrote, I find it a little disjointed and it's tough to follow its logic, especially in the latter half. | Relinquished
03.06.14 | logic in music
I don't feel it's disjointed but w/e, definitely has one of their heaviest moments | ericleb010
03.06.14 | Well, I guess it's just that the whole album has a theme to it, and it feels like ITB was put together quickly to wrap it up. Could've been done much better, that's all! | Ignimbrite
03.07.14 | The lack of The Watchtower is pretty conspicuous. | ericleb010
03.07.14 | I never understood the praise for that track. Receiver and Arrival are better tracks, and their stuff post-Beyond is phenomenally better as a whole. | Relinquished
03.07.14 | Further and Deliverance are better than Receiver and Arrival and The Watchtower is better than Arrival | Insurrection
03.07.14 | further, deliverance and receiver are my top 3 from the beyond. the lack of the beyond on this list is troubling in general
i think mute departure is way too high. one of the best off vertikal for sure but vicarious redemption or in awe of are better | ericleb010
03.07.14 | Vicarious Redemption is a track in search of a theme, and the search took way too long before they found it. I don't mind longer tracks, but that one just didn't cut it for me.
I loved In Awe Of on my first listen of Vertikal, but listening to it over time, it feels weak in variety. The main riff is neat but, over seven minutes, any riff gets worn out. As a whole I'm not the biggest fan of Vertikal. | Insurrection
03.07.14 | fair enough, i was surprised there were even 3 vertikal tracks on this and only 1 from beyond, at the bottom no less | enemyofthesundevils
03.07.14 | No Sleep?! | Relinquished
03.07.14 | "further, deliverance and receiver are my top 3 from the beyond."
