03.02.14 | List are digs,
I love the whole feel of the movie, do you also like it? |
Chrisjon89
03.02.14 | yeah rules. the monolith scenes where they play Gyorgy Ligeti are freaky, one in particular - perfect use of that music. the silence in space/breathing sound design is unnerving too. it's visually very impressive for '68 or whenever it was.
Dr. Strangelove was great too, although radically different. |
Insurrection
03.02.14 | i like how they used the movie to fake the moon landing |

03.02.14 | Dr. Strangelove is amazing |

03.02.14 | Kubrick is one of the best |
Thunderkat
03.02.14 | Yeah the soundtrack is a highlight, the whole movie is a highlight, it's amazing how it predates cgi. I saw the shining and he also did a great job, I have strange love but haven't gotten around to see it |
Rowan5215
03.02.14 | Ah man you gotta see Strangelove, hilarious film |
Chrisjon89
03.02.14 | i was impressed right from the outset, cos it was the same era as Planet of the Apes and it looks shitloads better.
Dr. Strangelove is worth seeing for Peter Sellers at the very least I think. i'm hesitant showing that to friends cos i dunno if the humour would appeal to them and it's black and white so it might be a hard sell. but i find it really funny and clever. |
Rowan5215
03.02.14 | I wasn't sure about Strangelove in the first 20 minutes either but once the setting changes to the War Room its just brilliant
And yeah Sellers is amazing |
Judio!
03.02.14 | 2nd favorite Kubrick, behind A Clockwork Orange. Space is the most fascinating subject to me, and 2001 is one of the most intruging sci-fi movies I have ever seen. I adore the film's score as well. 2001's creepy, atmospheric soundtrack has been really influential to the music I've been making for my solo project over the past few months. |
Thunderkat
03.02.14 | Damn I seem to have lost my copy of Strangelove, yeah I just had to get the soundtrack vinyl right away. Its perfectly creepy and it goes beyond just action left and right. It gives you the cold isolation between space and the cold calculated effort of Hal 9000 and gives you the coldness of the monoliths. Man what a film |

03.02.14 | The music when the monolith is on screen is pretty creepy. One of the best films of all time |

03.02.14 | Dr. Strangelove is amazing. [2]
2001 is visually stunning with a tremendous storyline. Ending always trips me out though. |

03.02.14 | My favorite Kubrick movie! (which by default means my favorite movie period.) Seen it 8 times and counting. |

03.02.14 | and since you asked for some thoughts - here you go! (copied from a list a made a couple years ago)
To me, 2001: A Space Odyssey is the pinnacle of what cinema can accomplish and is the perfect example of what can be achieved when a vision is translated directly to the screen. The soundtrack is iconic, the set pieces are visionary (it's mind boggling to think that man hadn't even been to the moon yet when this film was released), the cinematography and shot composition are painstakingly precise and visually arresting, and it's challenging. Man, is it challenging. Everything from the concept, to the amorphous progression of the film, to the mind-bending final moments is entirely original, thought-provoking, and visionary. The clearest indication of the quality of this film is its timelessness. It's been 43 years since the film was released and not only does it still visually impress, but its significance has only grown in relevance and is still extremely influential. This film is the ideal example of the distinction between cinema as not only a medium of entertainment, but as art. Favorite scene: Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite. |

03.02.14 | kubrick is great. 2001 is one of my least favorites by him. dont get me wrong, its good, just a little bloated. |
Alastor
03.02.14 | Watched it again yesterday. Still my favourite film after all those years for too many reasons to be named. |
Thunderkat
03.02.14 | @Kubrick; thank you for your opinion,
Yeah agree, he had amazing vision for the future. Hell he even included a video communication device and tablets. Oh man haha,
@keithstone; the slow pace gives an opportunity to appreciate the visuals and create a cold atmosphere. |

03.02.14 | definitely not overrated. it is truly a masterpiece of a film |

03.02.14 | i heard someone say that gravity is better than 2001 |
apert
03.02.14 | i liked gravity, but that's a ridiculous claim |
Kubrick
03.03.14 | for me, gravity was a 2.5/5 at best. amazing effects and cinematography, extremely bland, under-cooked characterization and pretty much thematically barren. i'd love to hear the argument for how it's better than 2001. |

i made this username 4 years ago waiting for the day that someone would post a list titled "2001: A Space Odyssey" so i could post in and spawn that notification in the comment tab. my life is complete.
(don't ask me why i didn't just make the list myself) |

03.03.14 | 2001 is...what's a good word?...essential. Quintessential. A plot on the timeline of artistic vision that marked the change of an entire genre of media thereafter.
Sci-fi changed; the aforementioned Gravity isn't the movie it is without 2001, not without that influential space dancing and marring of orchestral music with zero gravity. Wall-E isn't the movie it is without 2001, not without the borrowed characters and emphasis on the emotions of AI being more human than humans. Portal isn't the game it is without 2001, not without that iconic villain.
Filmmaking changed; look how intricately linked the music is to each scene. Not many people can name Richard Strauss's "Also Sprach Zarathustra," but just let them hear the first three notes played in the movie and WATCH as the suspense rises in their chest, back straightening with the expectation of the epic. Let "The Blue Danube" play, and see how many people DON'T identify it as the music from 2001. Look at HAL9000, one of the most recognizable antagonists in filmmaking for having more emotional depth than the humans around him. LOOK AT THE MONOLITH, AND TREMBLE, AND NEVER WONDER WHY.
Anyways...yeah, it's a cool movie. |

03.03.14 | absolutely fantastic movie. it would easily be my no. 1 Kubrick if I didn't have such a soft spot for the Shining. I draw much inspiration from both movies |
Rowan5215
03.03.14 | Yeah the Shining is hard to beat, literally almost flawless |
Kubrick
03.03.14 | @masochist- great post man. couldn't have said it any better myself. |

03.03.14 | watching full metal jacket right now boys, like most of his films it is so good to see |

03.03.14 | The Shining is the best movie ever made imo, this comes close |
Kubrick
03.03.14 | The Shining is a perfect movie as well for sure. I actually think The Shining has way more replay value than 2001.. I'll never get sick of watching that movie whereas after 8 times 2001 can be a little hard to sit through. The first time watching 2001 though was like the most engrossed I've ever been watching a movie. I'd say it just edges out The Shining as his best movie purely for innovation/technique/vision/impact it made on cinema.
But yeah as far as sheer entertainment value and pacing The Shining would def be my favorite. |
