My Past Year *thank You Sputnik!*

Today is my birthday, and my sputnikversary was recently as well. So I thought I?d make a list about some of the the music I?ve discovered and loved in the past year. I would consider the past year to be my first year of truly being heavily into music. I attempted to make this list in at least a loose chronological order in which I discovered/got into them. Thank you so much, sputnik, for being a part of what has probably been the best year of my life. I discovered a lot of this music because of you guys!
1Porcupine Tree
Deadwing

Prog was sort of my starting point with getting into music, and after exploring the classics, Porcupine Tree came to my attention and quickly became my new obsession.
2Opeth
Ghost Reveries

The close relation to PT lead me to Opeth, my first true dabbling into extreme metal, something I still haven?t quite gotten heavily into. Despite that Opeth has become one of my favorite bands.
3The Deat Hunter
Act II: The Meaning of, & All Things Regarding Ms. Leading

The hype leading up to the release of Migrant caught my interest, and I fell in love. Act II hooked me like few (if any) albums ever have.
4From Indian Lakes
Able Bodies

I actually discovered these guys from looking up Russian Circles (who I was interested in after seeing them play with Coheed and Cambria), and a guy who uploaded Enter on youtube also uploaded both From Indian Lakes albums.
5Between the Buried and Me
Colors

BTBAM bothered me so much when I first saw them play with Coheed and Cambria. But they interested me despite the annoyance I had with them. I had never heard something this technical (at the time I thought Tool was the most technical thing evar) and I stuck with it despite it being quite abrasive to me, and now Colors is one of my all time favorite albums.
6Radiohead
In Rainbows

Radiohead piqued my interest simply for being so highly praised. I didn?t quite get it at first, especially Kid A seemed pretty uninteresting. But a few songs really hooked me and over time they grew on me.
7Brand New
The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me

Sputnik?s nonstop dicksucking of Brand New forced me to finally listen to TDAGARIM. Jesus Christ I?m glad I did, this album has gotten me through some tough times over the past year.
8Fugazi
In on the Kill Taker

My interest in post-hardcore lead me to listening to some of the ?pioneers? of post-hardcore. At first I didn?t understand. Fugazi sounded nothing like what I understood to be post-hardcore and I was even a bit disappointed. But now I love them.
9Arcade Fire
Funeral

I became interested in the 2000?s indie scene. Funeral was pretty much where I started.
10Neutral Milk Hotel
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

The legendary status surrounding this album yet again forced into finally listening to it. Wow.
11Pixies
Doolittle

I decided to listen to this album after it made it so far in Trebor?s original ?sputnik?s favorite album madness?. It has gotten me more into the original wave of alt/indie rock.
12Slowdive
Souvlaki

I also became interested in shoegaze despite not enjoying Loveless as much (at first) and this album really hooked me much quicker, and it eased me much more easily into the dream pop/shoegaze/psychedelic scene.
13Candy Claws
Ceres and Calypso in the Deep Time

This album interested me because it was basically spammed on /mu/, but I?m so glad I checked it out because I absolutely love it, and now I love Candy Claws as a whole.
14The Antlers
Hospice

These next few album helped me through a really rough few months I had around the last quarter of 2013. Hospice blew me away, and was exactly what I needed.
15Beach House
Teen Dream

Beach House relaxed me so much and helped me sleep during times when sleep was scarce for me. For that I will always have a special connection with Beach House, and especially this album.
16La Dispute
Wildlife

Wildlife helped me as a more direct, raw outlet of emotions in an immense way, along with many other emo bands.
17A Lot Like Birds
Plan B

An unhealthy obsession with this band was formed when I decided to get more into the proggy/post hardcore type stuff.
18Poison the Well
You Come Before You

Poison the Well also fell victim to my never-ending hunger for post-hardcore/metalcore (along with Underoath, The Chariot and Norma Jean)
19Interpol
Turn On The Bright Lights

This album helped ease me into post-punk (a genre I?m still in the process of exploring deeper) and had a good emotional connection.
20Dinosaur Jr.
You're Living All Over Me

Alternative rock and Noise has really become my focus and Dino Jr. was a huge part of that.
21Future of the Left
The Plot Against Common Sense

The discovery of Future of the Left was like serendipity. My interest in noise and my already-existing obsession with post-hardcore met in a beautiful way. Future of the Left moves up my list of favorite bands every day.
22Sonic Youth
Daydream Nation

A more recent band that I?ve been listening to that I for some reason didn?t bother to get into before. Perfectly fits the kind of music I?ve been into.
23The Paper Chase
Now You Are One Of Us

Like future of the left, I found The Paper Chase to combine everything I?ve loved recently in an extremely interesting way, and I?ve listened to them a ridiculous amount in the past few months.
24Jon Hopkins
Immunity

Last, but not least, I finally decided to learn a bit more about electronic music, and this was one of the first electronic albums to truly blow me away (along with The Knife?s Silent Shout and Massive Attack?s Mezzanine). This is easing me into my next phase of music discovery and I?m excited as hell.
