02.26.14 | List is albums I consider "Growers" |
cryptside
02.26.14 | Nice list, man. I think it all depends on expectations and the way that you're feeling while listening to an album. I know that there are some albums that I can only fully enjoy when I'm in a certain mood, so listening to an album for the first time while not in the right mood can affect how you perceive that album for the first couple of listens. |
SirDrumsalot
02.26.14 | Most recently Crosses. Didn't like it much at first, now I love it.
Haken - The Mountain
A Few of Dev's albums had to grow. Deconstruction and Ghost.
Fleshgod Apocalypse - Labyrinth
Karnivool - Sound Awake
Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals
RHCP - One Hot Minute
Silverchair - Young Modern
Tool - 10,000 Days
Just to name a few. |
SGGreenman
02.26.14 | @thelastsignal I totally get that point. I also feel like (for me, at least) when listening to an album for the first couple times, I find myself just sorta glossing over it and taking out tracks I immediately love before really taking hard listens for what I like and dislike about the album, which ultimately decide how I feel about the album. |
zakalwe
02.26.14 | National - Boxer
Mogwai - Happy Songs For Happy People
Pink Floyd - The Darkside of the Moon
Pantha Du Prince - Black Noise
Death - The Sound of Perseverance |
SGGreenman
02.26.14 | 10,000 Days is another interesting example. I think people set their expectations way too high for that album since the band had just come off two classic releases, and immediately criticized the album for not being up to par. Now that the expectations have worn off, a lot more people like the album for what it is.
Expectations have a big part in "growers" as well. |
cryptside
02.26.14 | @sg exactly, I do the same thing. I kind of subconsciously look for standout tracks, which doesn't really make it easy to appreciate a vibe or atmosphere of a record. I did that with the first Windmills By the Ocean album, among countless others. |
BMDrummer
02.26.14 | Mastodon- Leviathan
The Flaming Lips- Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
High on Fire- Surrounded by Thieves
Big Black- Atomizer
Radiohead- Kid A
EyeHateGod- Dopesick (still growing on me)
Opeth- Blackwater Park
My Bloody Valentine- Loveless |
zakalwe
02.26.14 | Oh yeah and Kid A nice one BM |
SGGreenman
02.26.14 | @Zakalwe I think Dark Side was a grower for me too, but mostly because of the huge amounts of acclaim that album got. It took me a while to really "get it" |
AliW1993
02.26.14 | I think mood and expectations are probably the two biggest factors. Wild Beasts' new album is the perfect example for me. I've been a fan of theirs for a while but didn't really know what to expect from it, and it made barely any impression first time around. Now, though, I've tried it in a few different settings and it's really starting to unravel. |
BMDrummer
02.26.14 | Also, why does everyone say In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is a grower? When I first heard it, I liked it. |
menawati
02.26.14 | "I think mood and expectations are probably the two biggest factors"
you are probably right there, lots of things ive been disappointed by bcos i expected something and it didnt deliver, then repeated listening throws off your preconceptions |
zakalwe
02.26.14 | I don't really know what I was expecting from Darkside when I first heard it, it was "the" iconic album but I got absolutely nothing from it when I first gave it a spin.
I came back to it years later and found something and then to say it hit after a few more listens would be an understatement. |

02.26.14 | "Also, why does everyone say In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is a grower? When I first heard it, I liked it."
For me it was just too strange at first. The odd vocals, weird messages revolving around Anne Frank, the borderline crude lyrics, and its simplistic melodies. It eventually came around as one of the more beautiful albums I've ever heard, but at first there was a lot of mixed feelings. Not to mention the almost universal acclaim surrounding the album that gave me unreasonable expectations. |
Emyay
02.26.14 | damn so many albums have grown on me. thought de-loused was a piece of shit when i first heard it. thought arrows and anchors was bland at first. thought opeth were unremarkable. thought the mantle was snooze. lol'd at meshuggah. thought high violet was ghey. among other things. really love that feeling when something starts growing on your |

02.27.14 | Lateralus actually grew off of me. I still love it, but it doesn't hold up to AEnima IMO. |

SGGreenman
02.27.14 | That's awesome. The Money Store went from a 3.5 to a 4.5 for me, but that's the biggest jump I've had. |
NordicMindset
02.27.14 | The National - Boxer went from a 3 to a 5 |
SGGreenman
02.27.14 | I would love to experience an album where at first I gave like a 1.5 that grew to a 5, now that'd be some shit. |

climactic
02.28.14 | the 2 biggest growers for me would be jane doe and boxer. i think a lot of the time albums "growing" on you just means getting adapted to a certain style, not that album in particular though |
