RVAHC13: Picking Up The Bass

RVAHC13 02.15.14	Some of my preferred basses are Ibanez, Fender, and Yamaha
Masochist 02.15.14	Ibanez Soundgears are great, even the cheaper models. You can find a new one for under $200, and you can keep it as a backup even as you progress to more expensive ones.

RVAHC13 02.15.14	Yeah I've looked at some Ibanez basses and they seem to speak out to me the most + they're surprisingly cheap Are there any specific models I should look at?
OysterizerInsomniac 02.15.14	I'd recommend looking for something that's double your price range and then finding it used. I did that for both my guitar and my 5-string bass and it worked out great. Ibanez is also a solid choice.

ZombicidalMan 02.15.14	had an ibanez soundgear, didn't really like the pickups so i just traded it for a guitar. Now I've got a 90s Fender Jazz Bass, I'd highly recommend it. Jazz or Precision basses, be they Squiers or otherwise, are awesome. Plus they're easy to find too
MeatSalad 02.15.14	Also get a 5 string if possible, that fifth string is a glorious luxury and it also expands the range of songs you can learn by ear or tablature

RVAHC13 02.15.14	Does anyone know if the brand of bass has any specific impact on the genre of music you're trying to use it with?
MeatSalad 02.15.14	Not really, but certain tones can only be achieved by certain basses. Not something id eorry about if you're just picking it up for the first time tho

sapient 02.15.14	Depends on what style you want to do, playing with a pick is a lot easier and has a heavier attack but fingerstyle gives a lot more options with slapping

RVAHC13 02.15.14	I personally think slapping/finger picking has a nicer sound
ZombicidalMan 02.15.14	use both. I used to play with just picks and it destroyed my bass playing ability. Picks are great for like Tool, Isis, Death From Above 1979 and lots of distorted, heavy stuff, but for those funky bass lines, you need finger style. also maybe look into the Music Man Sterling Sting Ray? IDK your price range but you can grab their 5 and 4 string models used for like $500 give or take

ZombicidalMan 02.15.14	I definitely like this one http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass/sterling-by-music-man-s.u.b.-ray5-bass-guitar So I guess my recs would be Fender/Squier Jazz Bass or Precision Bass, Music Man Sterling Ray 4 or 5 string, or an Ibanez Soundgear (they're good, I just didn't like mine). Definitely check out craigslist or kijiji, they'll have better prices than pawn shops

erizen826 02.15.14	I have a Yamaha RBX170 and it's a really nice beginner bass. It's well made, sounds nice, and looks pretty nice too.
