BigHans: Rush: Your Origins

BigHans 02.13.14	I know KILL saw them on a Trailer Park Boys episode for the first time.
MrSirLordGentleman 02.13.14	I used to think they were a crappy 80's pop band, because a friend that loves that kind of music loved them too, then I jammed Tom Sawyer and said: "well, this is actually great", then I bought Hemispheres and Moving Pictures and of course, I don't regret it
NeroCorleone80 02.13.14	Seeing Rush threads getting bumped all the time by Kill and Sonic. I obviously heard of them before that but only really started jamming them regularly about 3 years ago. They were much heavier than other 70s prog bands which appealed to me.
ButteryBiscuitBass 02.13.14	Bro it was probably '01 when my boy medical pedical played me Working Man and I boner'd for weeks. We went on to jam the first album in its entirity. We still hook up and jam a full Rush LP and blaze together every now and then, which is kind of sad considering our age, but IDGAF.
BigHans 02.13.14	I was jamming Rush before Sonic was born. But Sonic is definitely biggest Rush fan ever. Sonic/KILL being the same person and all.
MO 02.13.14	I remember seeing a picture of neil peart's drum kit in a magazine and thinking holy fuck! found out they were Canadian, got moving pictures when I was 13 and have been rockin ever since
BigHans 02.13.14	that rules, Biscuit
SitarHero 02.13.14	Tom Sawyer was on The Waterboy soundtrack.
ButteryBiscuitBass 02.13.14	Yeah man, will forever love that man for introducing me to Rush.
BigHans 02.13.14	MO Rush must be Gods there.
BigHans 02.13.14	Dude Working Man riffs so hard
ExcentrifugalForz 02.13.14	Years ago trying to play their music on guitar and drums made me realize how good they were.
ButteryBiscuitBass 02.13.14	I know dude, was blown away by that guitar solo and of course: I GET UP AT 7 YEAH
Avagantamos 02.13.14	dad showed me a neil peart drum solo on the R30 dvd when I was 12
BigHans 02.13.14	Finding My Way made Hit Parader Magazines Top 100 Metal songs ever. This was in one of their magazines back in 91. Read that list hard.

ButteryBiscuitBass 02.13.14	'I don't remember life without Rush to be honest.' Sounds like you need therapy b
StallionMang 02.13.14	Heard a cover of Tom Sawyer on Rock Band and I really liked it so my dad played me the real thing and I thought the singer was a girl
BigHans 02.13.14	This is going over 500 comments
ButteryBiscuitBass 02.13.14	Dunno about canadians but thats a typical 'I don't remember life without (insert drug of choice here)' comment over here.
TheGreatQ 02.13.14	One of my best friends in high school loved them, and so did one of my teachers.
BigHans 02.13.14	Seriously, Chronicles is the best album ever.
Necrotica 02.13.14	Rush were one of my favorite bands as a kid. I never grew up with the alternative rock or nu metal stuff, so I was mostly into classic rock and 70s progressive rock. I used to go on my dad's old computer and listen to music on a program called Music Match Jukebox (back when it was affiliated with MSN Music). There I would listen to bands like Journey, King Crimson, Foreigner, Gentle Giant, Queen, the works. Eventually, I stumbled upon Rush as a result of checking those bands and fell in love with their music early on. The first album I ever got by them is Hemispheres, and then I just kept getting all their records after that. Hemispheres is not only my favorite Rush album, but also the one I associate with my progressive rock childhood; it defined it. King Crimson, Yes, and ELP are up there for sure, but Rush still holds the most special place to me.
BigHans 02.13.14	Damn Fear Tomorrow, that rules
BigHans 02.13.14	sounds like you Rushed fucking hard on MSN Music Brendan

intotheshit 02.13.14	Geddy Lee and Neil Peart double penetrated me while moving pictures was playing in the background. Geddy Lee kept calling me his Tom Sawyer.

BMDrummer 02.13.14	GH2, it had YYZ on it. I really didn't get into them though until I heard 2112, I was hooked the moment the first part ended. My dad was also a huge fan and he pushed me towards them and now they are one of my favorite bands.
AngelofDeath 02.13.14	You got Mirage, Snow Goose, and Moonmadness?
BigHans 02.13.14	Five Leaves Left reviewed Signals hard yestereday
AngelofDeath 02.13.14	Camels in spacesuits are the best thing ever.

bach 02.13.14	I've always listened to rush but I didn't get into them come age 15. I heard Hemispheres and I've been jamming hard ever since.
neurisis17 02.13.14	Raised on it. Basically since my first exposure to music, Rush always been there. Best band ever, end of story.
Jethro42 02.13.14	RUSH
sonictheplumber 02.14.14	love this thread, and im glad to know me and KILL played a part in at least one person checkin out rush i first heard rush on the radio in 4th or 5th grade, i liked them alright but sorta wrote them off as like, nothing worth getting that into. then for no reason i decided to listen to s/t, fly by night and moving pictures in 7th/8th grade, liked them and just gradually kept listenin and diggin em more and checkin out their other shit. since then ive seen em 3 times, i own all the vinyl up to power windows, i got 5 or 6 shirts (4 of which are concert shirts total cost of em being 140 bucks)
menawati 02.14.14	fksake dont want your life story dude
climactic 02.14.14	my dad forceably inserted a walkman with test for echo on it into my mom when she was around 7 months pregnant with me
sonictheplumber 02.14.14	and much like KILL i was kinda way too into metal to appreciate some of rush's shit at first. i used to not even like side 2 of moving pictures cause i was doin the toxic waltz daily
sonictheplumber 02.14.14	dude ive written essays at school about rush i can go on forever
menawati 02.14.14	haha, i actually did that once at school, did an essay which was basically bytor and the snow dog and got an A for it
sonictheplumber 02.14.14	i thought this list was gonna be about the origins of rush though like, blue cheer and cream and shit hey neil digs camel by the way i read an interview from like 77/78 around that area and he talks about camel being one of his fav bands
menawati 02.14.14	thats fking sad really innit
sonictheplumber 02.14.14	dude that rules i suck at writing fiction though
sonictheplumber 02.14.14	how old were you when you did that when i wrote about rush the topic the teacher gave us was "write about something that means a lot to you" so the essay was pretty gay but i also got an A
menawati 02.14.14	still pretty mental putting 'tobes of hades' in an essay
menawati 02.14.14	13 i think
sonictheplumber 02.14.14	damn 13 wouldve been when i first heard bytor metal not mental
menawati 02.14.14	damn, other thing i remember now i had a necklace with a pendant that was a silver syrinx thing with 2112 in middle, what a cock haha
sonictheplumber 02.14.14	ok that is fucking funny i'll admit i dont really have any stupid rush merch just shirts and i got a starman poster
sonictheplumber 02.14.14	i want like a power windows lighter or signals scarf or something crazy though
menawati 02.14.14	in my defence i did actually have a mental cockometer and never wore it
sonictheplumber 02.14.14	yeah its kinda like my friend johnny's yes - fly from here keychain. he thinks its cool but refuses to publicly display it
sonictheplumber 02.14.14	it was honestly the coolest merch available on the fly from here tour. and the fuckin gay shirts cost more than the tickets!
Jethro42 02.14.14	Damn I cant even remember my first experience with Rush. The thing I know is that I was on highschool and my friends were all agreeing that Neil Peart was the best drummer ever. My first purchase was 2112. I was possibly around 15yo. I also remember that I got in a band as a drummer and we used to play Bastille Day and Different Strings. Oh and the very first song I've heard was Fly By Night due to its airplay.
menawati 02.14.14	"yes - fly from here keychain" I did laugh out loud at that.
Jethro42 02.14.14	A little detail; I was 13 yo when 2112 was released.
sonictheplumber 02.14.14	you lucky old fucks got to see rush in the 80s
BigHans 02.14.14	Sonic I knew you would dig this hard dude
mryrtmrnfoxxxy 02.14.14	my dad turned to me in my car seat with some rush cd in his hands and said this is real rock and then we jammed
BigHans 02.14.14	did you promptly shit yourself when you heard the first riff, Foxxy?
mryrtmrnfoxxxy 02.14.14	thats when my unfortunate tendency to shit myself when listening to rush started yea
BigHans 02.14.14	Its a common problem, and understandable
BigHans 02.14.14	bump
omnipanzer 02.14.14	Oh sorry I had just logged in from home and threw down my ranking, didn't read the description.
omnipanzer 02.14.14	TBH almost anyone who listened to Rush when I was a teenager (we'll say late 80's early 90's) were older dudes or friends with older siblings. I really never paid much attention to them, I have a life long aversion to anything 80's that isn't alt or punk. That Tom Sawyer song from the radio was pretty kick ass though. The people who did happen to like them REALLY REALLY seemed to like them which for me really put them in the dork category. So to recap only dorks and trashy old dudes (20 somethings) liked rush. So one day when I was in my early twenties I got into an argument with my much older step-brother about how much they sucked and I was really kind of giving it to him. He finally said that's fine dude but really it's your opinion and you're being an ass... oh. Yah I suppose I was... no I really was so I decided to give them a try. I figured Ic ould at least have some knowledge to back up my arguments instead of just bagging on anything I might have heard on the radio. I purchased Exit stage left, chosen while standing in a record store I decided it looked like a good "best of" type of album. I was blown away... I loved every song on it and had only ever heard maybe two of them. From there I got Moving Pictures then S/T then 2112 and finally Permanent Waves. I'm not a huge Rush fan but that period I'm admittedly smitten with and I love those albums to this day.
BigHans 02.14.14	cool story bro
BigHans 02.14.14	Seriously though, thats cool. Dorks and trashy old dudes. Love it
YoYoMancuso 02.14.14	Heard the Freewill solo on the radio and my brain melted
omnipanzer 02.14.14	Haha, they were just kind of passe at that moment. We were busy listening to Tool and Primus and Metallica etc. Rush were tame by comparison... to new to be classic 60's 70's stuff (well to the best of my knowledge at that point) and to old to be cool.
tempest-- 02.14.14	been my dad's fav band since they fuckin started he's got all the records up until hold your fire and he's got moving pictures and chronicles and now clockwork angels on cd so yea cheers dad
mandan 02.14.14	Been into this band for prob about 10-12 years. Saw them live on the Snakes & Arrows tour. However, only recently am I getting to truly appreciate their discog.
BigHans 02.14.14	Their discog is so massive dude Ive been jamming them for 23 years and I still havent heard the whole thing.
ButteryBiscuitBass 02.14.14	Yes Hans! I can finally see your profile picture!
omnipanzer 02.14.14	Oh come on now... that's just being lazy.
BigHans 02.14.14	jamming Vapor Trails and Test For Echo today to finish their discog. IN the past whenever I would think about jamming those albums I wound up just jamming some other rad Rush album instead.
omnipanzer 02.14.14	I get it, I had similar issues when I decided to get right with the Bowie discog which is larger. You just have to do it man... for closure! =-D
BigHans 02.14.14	Vapor Trails goes pretty hard, much better than I thought it would be.
BigHans 02.14.14	I would lose my mind going through Bowie's discog. Guy has some truly awful stuff. Ill stick to Hunky Dory and Ziggy. Low sucks.
omnipanzer 02.14.14	lol, well yah if you remove that entire portion but really he has 27 albums. For a real fan I'd remove 5 for general not goodness. For someone who is a marginal fan I'd remove an additional 6. if you want to do the early popularity vs Berlin then you could do Station to Station through Scary Monsters although S2S and SM are more commercial than the trilogy. but If you prefer the earlier Glam defining stuff... Man Who Stole the World, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane. I would also include Scary Monsters, Let's Dance, Earthling and Heathen as they have similar accessibility or commercially viable sounds. Heathen would be the only one I MIGHT remove the rest you should definitely check out if you haven't. tldr, You would probably like all of these: Man Who Stole the World, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane Scary Monsters, Let's Dance, Earthling Heathen
omnipanzer 02.14.14	And I can help you with any you have interest in of course. ;-)
BigHans 02.14.14	Damn omni, you know your Bowie. Maybe someday dude.
omnipanzer 02.14.14	Yah I've always been a huge fan of his hits and he has many but I felt he had a lot of shit too. So one day I just decided I was going to figure out if I liked him or not and I went ahead and spent a couple months making my way through his discog. It was actually the exact same time Tom was doing his reviews so Q3-Q4 2011. I'd started like a few weeks before that. I found I knew stuff all along his time line but very few full albums. I really ended up finding way more stuff to love and it put some of the stuff I wasn't a fan of into context. As I said there are 5 albums I think are utter crap but the rest I honestly feel have some merit. The Berlin trilogy which I really was not a fan of I found some great gems hidden in there (well hidden to me). It's still my least favorite Bowie era to listen too but put in context and that shit is monumentally influential to what came after and I can see that now. Honestly, my favorite version of Heroes... http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=FjBcNU1UZUs It's been stuck in my head since it came out in 03' when I purchased it off the shelf.
BigHans 02.14.14	damn dude you went hard on him
BigHans 08.06.19	Bumping old list as I just started a huge Rush binge again.
