Nocturnal
02.13.14 | Ive been writing songs in F standard on my 7 string and I thought why the fuck not just get an 8 string baby. |
MO
02.13.14 | "I finally got into this band and don't know why not sooner"
fuck yea bro, my thoughts exactly when they finally clicked many years back
one of my band mates plays an 8 and 7 string. he likes to experiment with both but mainly rocks the 7 for our tunes. it really just brings heaviness to a whole new level |
MO
02.13.14 | also fuck yes for rockin 5 m/ |
Diglett
02.13.14 | dropped some cash on a RG8 and shit is straight fire
extended range is pretty much the only reason, ive been playing a lot of AAL, Ever Forthright and very recently stuff from Deftones' Koi No Yokan |
Nocturnal
02.13.14 | Ya MO my Canadian brother, Ion are amazing and a huge influence for me. |
Keyblade
02.13.14 | What's the point, you'll only use one anyway |
Nocturnal
02.13.14 | "What's the point, you'll only use one anyway"
I wanna hit them brown notes with my junz tho brah its only logical.
Cool Koffiiing I'm big on Ibanez guitars, I have 3 already lol. |
joshuahuntkc
02.13.14 | I played a baritone 6 with an extended scale and I played it down in 8 string range for a while. Full 8's are to clunky on the fret board unless you want to shell out a few grand. |
Nocturnal
02.13.14 | True dat josh. Im gonna have to check out some baritones too. |
joshuahuntkc
02.13.14 | Make sure you get one with extended scale otherwise it'll sound like a seven does when you drop tune it to 8. |
grish
02.13.14 | i'm gonna buy a guitar soon and debating on getting a 7 string, 8 seems excessive for me |
SitarHero
02.13.14 | ^What the hell? Start with a six-string!
Or better yet, start with a bass. |
grish
02.13.14 | haha, no i mean i've played guitar for awhile. i'm selling a rather nice guitar to get a different one, and 7-string is a consideration |

02.13.14 | I did have one for awhile, but just didn't feel a use for the extra low, so I just use 7s now. I actually even tuned my 7 up to C#
with some custom strings cause I love the tone and tension from it in that tuning |
joshuahuntkc
02.13.14 | The only reason I would get an eight would be to set it up in pairs it in B. That would be pretty neat. Like a giant mandolin. |
bloc
02.14.14 | Even 7 strings are too much... |
fr33convict
02.14.14 | I got my first 7 (Ibanez RG927QMF) and actually find it extremely relaxing to play on and way more comfortable. I don't dig it for metal a ton but fully independent bass lines and extended chord voicings are the way to go while playing jazz, classical, etc., |
climactic
02.14.14 | nah 7s are cool, 8 is kinda overkill but meshuggah rocks it, and apparently bands are trying to popularize 9s now................ |
Nocturnal
02.14.14 | Who the fuck is playing 9 strings? |
fr33convict
02.14.14 | Glasscloud. |
climactic
02.14.14 | yeah glass cloud and monuments i think |
Diglett
02.14.14 | Nah monuments rocks 7 strings, I think Glass Cloud is the only popular band that dicks around with 9 |
Nocturnal
02.14.14 | Tru that shit cray. |
Tokoloshe
02.15.14 | Heart of a Coward is easily the best out there playing the 8 strings now. Monuments are great too. There are three Aussie bands making some amazing music in Northlane, Circles and Stories. Plus there is a South African band Megalodon who are fantastic. |
Tokoloshe
02.15.14 | Xerath are cool too. And i think Dino Cazares of Fear Factory also rocks his 8 string Ibanez on a few songs. |
Tokoloshe
02.15.14 | I've got a Jackson Dinky 8 string. Its entry level but it makes beastly sounds. |
ChuckyTruant
02.20.14 | I have an Ibanez RG2228M, with Lace Deathbar and X-bar pickups. Slays |
ZombicidalMan
02.20.14 | I like tuning my 6 strings down instead TBH. 7 strings are cool, but I'm just not an 8 string guy. Personally I like the Ibanez 8s the best for playability however |
bloc
02.21.14 | Dude who even plays Lace |
climactic
02.21.14 | i have a 6 string epiphone les paul tuned to drop a# true story |
bloc
02.21.14 | The string gauge must be steel cable-like |
climactic
02.21.14 | 10s or 11s, its usually in drop c but it goes anywhere from drop a# to standard depending on my ~mood~ |
bloc
02.21.14 | The last time I dropped a Les Paul was when I wanted to play an In Flames song...so a VERY long time ago |
climactic
02.21.14 | haha its my only guitar, i "grew out of it" years ago but ya know, money and stuff. want to get a nice ibanez or jackson in the future though. |
bloc
02.21.14 | I just bought a second guitar a couple of weeks ago actually. It's a 2000 Ibanez RG570, which is considered to be one of their best models. I honestly suggest looking into Ibanez's older models before getting something new, assuming you don't mind buying used. They really don't make them like they used to. |
climactic
02.21.14 | will do bloccy. no problem at all with buying something used, makes a lot more sense to me |
Pennywise_M
02.21.14 | 1-4 are awesome albums/bands. I dislike Ion Dissonance though |
bloc
02.21.14 | Yeah, I would love to get a custom made guitar or some shit, but I'd probably be too scared to even take it out of the case. |
ChuckyTruant
02.21.14 | While Ibanez definitely had their limelight in the 90's, their Prestige line still kicks major ass. You are better off getting a newer Prestige than looking for a 90's RG550 or RG570, those are a lot of the time crap-shoots in terms of condition. Trust me, I have owned numerous Prestige's and numerous 90's MIJ Ibby's. I've played some sweet 90's Ibanez's, but I've also played some 90's MIJ Ibanez's that I wouldn't out over Indo stuff cause its already been beat to shit. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.21.14 | thats the worst War from a Harlots Mouth album yo get all the others! |
ChuckyTruant
02.21.14 | I honestly think Transmetropolitan is their worst, its still kickass though |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.21.14 | Transmetro is their best by far its the one album where they had a remotely original style going on. before they started catering to all that tech melodic deathcore whatever the fuck that all those crap bands are doing these days |
ChuckyTruant
02.21.14 | i don't really know if I'd consider is original though Graham |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.21.14 | "the one album where they had a ===>remotely original style |
NordicMindset
02.21.14 | 12-strings of pure bliss |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.21.14 | indicating its the only one that was even slightly original
ie they got less and less original from there
reading comp |
J0ckstrapsFTW
02.21.14 | I have an 8 string i play in e standard doe. The 8th string tuned down step as well |
NordicMindset
02.21.14 | Playing tuned down three steps is pretty weird |
J0ckstrapsFTW
02.21.14 | I agree
|
NordicMindset
02.21.14 | I tried it once and it went to hell |
ChuckyTruant
02.21.14 | I wouldn't ever consider it remotely original. I'd say their latest is more original |
GringoSuave89
03.31.14 | bro, do you even Vildhjarta? |
Lowder91bird
03.31.14 | Cool list? |
Nocturnal
03.31.14 | Bro I totally Vildhjarta.
and no not cool list, its best list. |
Pennywise_M
04.18.14 | Some good shit in this list bro. About the 8 strings, im not even a guitar player but i do know that
the Hellraiser is a bitching 7/8 string guitar for the price. I've seen my mate try some and
Hellraiser is the fucking bang for the buck. Low ends like a fucking zombie dinosaur in a cave and
goes as bright and "metallic" as you could hope for a bristle cutting sound. Fucking good guitar my
friend |
sapient
04.18.14 | I stopped using 8 strings awhile ago, I love Meshuggah and the tone they get with it but the music I write nowadays really only requires a low B at the most. I use Ibanez Iron Label guitars and with a proper setup they kick ass |
bloc
04.18.14 | Schecter in general is really good for the price. They come well spec'd and despite not having a true neck through guitar, their "all access" heel can fool most people.
I like the older Ibanezes and had some interest in their Iron Label series but I tried one and the fret edges are sharp as hell. |
ChuckyTruant
04.18.14 | I too have jumped off the 8 string wagon. I found myself either just using the first 6 or 7 strings without using the 8th at all, or I was going Meshuggah and only using the 8th. It was weird, creatively. I also never enjoyed the tons I got out of that guitar.
But anyway, I'm back to sevens and sixes, I'm sure it will stay that way for awhile. |
