| Just Finished Neon Genesis Evangelion
What in the ever living fuck just happened | | 1 | | MGMT MGMT
The change in tone was almost expected. With so many open ends and mysterious unexplained concepts, they couldnt just keep the problem of the week the main focus. Add in the limited budget and time, and a change in direction will finish it off, quality of the product notwithstanding. What I didnt expect was for it to be so destructive. And just when you think the characters have been broken down too much, they mollywop you square in the face with one of the most intensely introspective character analysis? you will ever see. All the main characters get a chance in the spotlight, and you see exactly what makes them tick. You see them come to terms with what they are, what they were, and what they want to be.It was a ballsy move, but it was one of the first shows to get so intimate with its characters. It was probably the most frustrating thing to watch as a viewer at the time, but the resolution in the form of End Of Evangelion is immensely more satisfying, if not bittersweet. | | 2 | | Swans Children Of God
I admit, I watched the Rebuild series first. If anything, that just made watching the original series even more surprising. Rebuild is basically an Alternate Universe with the same exact concept as the original. All the main characters and concepts are there, but the path that is taken is different. The differences arent clear at first, but they become more apparent in the second movie, and by the time the third movie rolls around, shit is off the fucking rails. Its so much darker, and I see why hardcore fans would be ticked at the series. Yet, as the original genuinely intrigued me with its psycho-analysis of everything wrong with the main characters, watching the Rebuild series is an emotional rollercoaster for me. And its not even finished yet. | | 3 | | Shinseiki Evangelion Komm, Susser Tod
I really wish 14 year old me stumbled across the finale of this. Hideki Anno created NGE in a state of depression, and I'd like to think a part of him used himself as a frame for the characters and the problems they faced. The biggest one being Shinji Ikari's crippling social anxiety, which causes a plethora of problems for himself and the people around him. Social Anxiety is something I've been dealt with since I got in middle school, and only in the past year has it gotten better. On the surface, Neon Genesis Evangelion is a mecha-anime. But the surface is brittle, and if you stick around you will find one of the most psychologically intriguing shows in a long time. | |

01.18.14 | How fitting that this thread appears just as I reinstate my status as an Eva scholar | dimsim3478
01.18.14 | OH GOD EVA
I love the finale and all, but it was kind of a letdown because it ends with all the characters stuck in Instrumentality. Other than that, I just wish they resolved all the issues with the other characters better like Asuka. | TAB

seriously, if you thought that ending was depressing.... One of my favorite series ever, anime or otherwise.
EDIT: have you watched 3.33 yet? that is a game changer. | Rev
01.18.14 | I actually hate 3.0
That said I saw it again in theaters tonight | GringoSuave89
01.18.14 | If I may, why do you hate it? I'm reserving judgment until I get the full picture. Some of the characterizations were my only complaints. | gryndstone
01.18.14 | I kind of the like the ambiguous ending of the movie version, where you at least know that instrumentality is something a person can undo.
The original ending was just the definition of a "GAINAX" ending. Actually, I think NGE is where that term came from... | gryndstone
01.18.14 | @Gringo
I watched 3.33. I didn't hate it because I didn't know why everyone else hated it. I think it's pretty good, if you consider it a reworking of the series from the ground up.
@TAB
End Of Evangelion was... pretty outstanding. Definitely the best thing about the series. | GringoSuave89
01.18.14 | Yeah, the fact that you can decide to risk the hurt that comes with human interaction and being an individual is one that hits hard. I struggle with clinical depression and this series was really a godsend.
It's a crazy ride thus far. I just won't jump to conclusions until the final part is released. Who knows what they have planned. | dimsim3478
01.18.14 | Evangelion came at a pretty hard time in my life as well, and it definitely helped move me along

01.18.14 | Probably watched the series in full like 9 times...wrecks me every time. | ZombicidalMan
01.18.14 | one of the only anime series I've just powered through in a few days. So good.
Haven't seen anything but the original show yet, so that's on my list. What should I start with? | GringoSuave89
01.18.14 | Well you have to do the End Of Evangelion movie, just for the ending. Then Rebuild, but don't expect the same story. | ZombicidalMan
01.18.14 | alright, end of evangelion it is. thanks | GringoSuave89
01.18.14 | My pleasure. Feel free to rant here after you see it |
