| My Top Ten Reviewing Mistakes
I like to think that I'm at least consistent in quality with my reviews, but rI know I've fucked up rrquite a bit too. Sometimes successes have to rfollow a line of failures, and so this is my list of rrthings I messed up with rmy reviews. I don't feel like editing my reviews at the moment, but I'll rrdo rso at some point. Sorry if I've wasted any of your time with my fuck-ups rin my reviewing. | 10 | | Dio Holy Diver
LoTR/D&D: In my Holy Diver review, I called the lyrics "lots of Lord of the Rings, lots
of Dungeons and Dragons, etc"; the statement was completely ignorant. There's
obviously a diverse well of fantasy literature and other work to draw from, and I
was making a ridiculous generalization. I'm still not a big fan of the album, but I was
giving the lyrics an unfair assessment. | 9 | | Symphony X The Divine Wings of Tragedy
Russell Allen's singing: When reviewing this album, I mentioned that Russell Allen
"may not be the best vocalist, but he fits the band very well." Well, that shit is
straight-up wrong. I'm not sure why I considered Allen the weakest link in the band,
especially considering that he's also one of the most acclaimed singers in popular
prog metal (or even just prog metal in general). Regardless, he rules. | 8 | | Norah Jones Little Broken Hearts
Genre mix-up: When reviewing Little Broken Hearts, I mentioned that Norah's
previous album The Fall included a lot of hard rock, which is a major error. There
was practically nothing hard rock-oriented about the record; it's more of a mix
between alternative rock, folk, and jazz. You guys should definitely check Little
Broken Hearts though, very underrated. | 7 | | Madvillain Madvillainy
The intro: The intro I currently have for Madvillainy doesn't even explain anything
about the album, just the label it's on. The original intro I had there was even
worse, making a bunch of negative hip-hop generalizations. But yeah, I don't even
like the one that's there now. | 6 | | Slayer Reign in Blood
See below: Similar to the last entry on this list, my Reign in Blood review starts with
nothing even describing Slayer or applying to what I'll say about the album. Here's
the first paragraph: "As I sit here typing this review, there lies an eerie breeze and
foggy weather outside my window. The storm just passed, and now the skies are
gray and darkened above me. Everything looks miserable and gloomy, and the
clouds are looming over my house as I write. Now, what does this have to do with
anything? Well unfortunately, the description is an accurate metaphor for the
thrash "classic" Reign in Blood by Slayer." | 5 | | At the Drive-In Relationship of Command
Another genre mix-up: Not only is this a shitty review as it is, but I considered this
album a mix of prog rock, hardcore punk, "surreal ambiance," and metal... damn. | 4 | | Meshuggah ObZen
The repetition argument: I still dislike this record, but I didn't explain my arguments
well enough at all. I emphasized the repetition way too much and didn't even
mention many of the tracks. I think I was pissed when I was making the review, so
I probably came off as a bit ranty as well. Repetition shouldn't always completely
break an album, so I'll elaborate more in the future. | 3 | | Opeth Deliverance
The entire review of Deliverance: I really dislike my review of this. It was way too
long and long-winded. It felt as if I was just giving a bunch of technical info (some
of it wrong, I think) and didn't explain the pros and cons very well. I just really
needed to pare it down. | 2 | | The Devin Townsend Project Ghost
The rush for attention: I rushed my Ghost review out so I could get a bunch of
comments and overall attention, not realizing just how empty and non-descriptive it
was. I barely mentioned any tracks, and my writing was pretty bland. I try not to
rush out any reviews anymore. | 1 | | Journey Escape
My original Escape review was such a fucking trainwreck
that it's the only review I've everd. It was ranty beyond belief, and I was
apparently pissed that Journey were popular or something. I was trying so hard to
make a better review than SyphonAss's write-up (even mentioning that during the
review) that mine suffered. I also used way too much inclusive language to top it
all off. So yeah, I'm happy that I rewrote it and actually put more genuine effort
into it. | |

12.30.13 | Happy New Year's Eve dude.
Dio's lyrics are like power metal lyrics in the sense that they may seem cheesy at first but they are allegorical most of the times and open to interpretations. As such, dragons might be problems or fears in our lives and swords the courage we must have. Shit, even my comment seems cheesy but you know what I mean... | Necrotica
12.30.13 | At least they're not as bad as Dragonforce or Hammerfall's lyrics :P | TheSupernatural

Nah, in all seriousness, awesome list. You're a solid reviewer, and I probably would have never noticed most of these mistakes had you not pointed out. You should definitely apply for Staff next month. I was thinking of applying for contributor myself. | Mongi123

Truly one of the most important metal bands of all time and easily one of my favourites. Don't see many people on their threads apart from the regulars, what do you other guys think of them? |
