12.15.13 | @Kill Yeah, I owned Death Magnetic because my dad got it for me for my birthday. It was the only Metallica album I owned back then and I listened to it once and I subconsciously hated it. I traded it in though for RTL and AJFA. Great decision. I recorded my band's first album with this in mind. I made it quieter than it should've been though. The Vapor Trails remix is alright also. I do have a copy of the GH version of Death Magnetic. What an improvement. James's voice kind of sucks on the album though because he sings instead of yells his lyrics. |

12.15.13 | Wow, I just checked In Rainbow's waveforms and was really surprised. The album doesn't sound super compressed/clipped outside the end of All I Need, though. Mastodon's "Blood Mountain", on the other hand... |

12.15.13 | When you're a kid and you put on Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness and you're like wtf why is this so quiet, that sucks, but then you crank it and it sounds fucking amazing
These types of records don't really exist anymore |
KILL
12.15.13 | yea theres no crankable records anymore, well there is but theyre rare, the new gorguts for example and steven wilson basically any album with a non retard producer |
Realm
12.15.13 | steven wilson was one of the worst offenders lol |
KILL
12.15.13 | in the past yea i remember when he spoke out against the loudness war around the time deadwing came out and that album was loud as fuck but his 2 recent solo records have been very dynamic so hes obv learned his lesson!!!!!!! |
Realm
12.15.13 | this is honestly one of the worst threads about the subject wow sputnik |
KILL
12.15.13 | well make it better then lets go |
Realm
12.15.13 | itd be cool if people stopped calling it the "loudness war" and learned a thing or two about how the process actually works. some albums get wrecked in mastering, others it's a stylistic choice to have little dynamics but that doesnt automatically mean that what youre hearing is or isnt "clean" |
KILL
12.15.13 | yea true i mean look at elctro blip blop music is meant to be super compressed cos its all about the beef but when u gots neil peart with high hats that sound like fizz ur left feelin raped of all thats good in the world |
Realm
12.15.13 | larks by king crimson is how i want a lot of music to sound like dynamics wise but it doesn't mean that everything else sucks and is the equivalent to death magnetic |
Realm
12.15.13 | kill i understand |
KILL
12.15.13 | but lets be honest all the examples here minus in rainbows are just shitty compressed rock albums with no excuse other than makin music for retards with shitty speakers n ipods |
KILL
12.15.13 | yea i get ya hyperbole always happens with this shit but man why even when albums started gettin compressed in the mid 90s they still had punch n highs n lows, where have all the dynamix gone :( |
Realm
12.15.13 | believe it or not producers have been trying to do that for decades and some of your favorites were the ones who started mixing that way
|

12.15.13 | man fuck these long comments who am i deviant???? |

12.15.13 | dude my recording professor worked for gabriel omg |
KILL
12.15.13 | dude i know and i get what theyre going for but idk why they dont see the limit of compressing shit, look at counterparts by rush, that is as ballsy as modern records yet retains clarity and dynamics |

12.15.13 | honestly i didnt know shit about this stuff a few years back, i used to think the remastered version of rust in peace was better than the original cos it was more HEVY
then i upgraded from 2watt pc speakers and realised what a mistake i made |
Realm
12.15.13 | heard a story that the president of motown would get a tape from the studio when they did a final mix and if it wasn't bumpin in his car he would tell the engineers to mix it again. |
Realm
12.15.13 | one last important thing to remember is that musicians have more control over their music and the way it is recorded/mixed/mastered blah blah instead of the producer calling every shot. basically, music becoming less dynamic is a partial result of musicians having more influence on sound. the engineer's job is not to fix, it's to reproduce sound accurately. |

12.16.13 | @Realm Thanks for the constructive criticism and I have read into the whole process of making an album sound like it does in the case of Death Magnetic. I understand the bands have a lot of control over the sound/mix of their music, the problem is that they either don't listen to their fans, lost their hearing (Metallica?), or the creative control is left to the engineer/producer. Hopefully more people will realize this phenomenon though. It isn't as bad as it was in the early 2000s, but Rick Rubin is still making records so that sucks. |
