My 13 Of '13

My top 13 albums from the year 2013
1Typhoon
White Lighter

I came across this band far too late this year. Their first two albums are available for download for free off their bandcamp
page, so if nothing else, go download those. Now. Secondly, go buy this album. Typhoon is a Portland based group that is just
making some incredible music. This is the happiest album about death that you will ever come across and probably one of the
best albums that you will find as well. Just go buy it.
2The National
Trouble Will Find me

Wow, just wow. I got into The National in early 2012, so I really only experienced High Violet, which I didn't hate but didn't love,
up until buying this album. That's when everything changed. I loved this album so much that I started looking at their older
stuff, and just fell in love with the band all over again. Matt's baritone is fantastic and it's a great album to throw on at any point
of any day.
3Vampire Weekend
Modern Vampires of the City

I hadn't been the biggest Vampire Weekend fan until this album. I had just gotten my record player when this album was about
to come out, and though I might as well make this album my first pre order on vinyl. The fun thing about vinyl is it forces you to
listen to the album in its entirety, no skipping tracks. Which I think was really beneficial for this album. It's so solid all the way
though and is a much more mature album for Vampire Weekend. Also listening to all the different things that went into this
album from an NPR interview with the band added a lot more appreciation to this album.
Here's the interview for those interested; http://www.npr.org/blogs/allsongs/2013/04/29/179854416/vampire-weekend-on-new-

4Volcano Choir
Repave

This is where it gets tricky; my top four albums could honestly all be tied for favourite album of the year. Volcano Choir is a side
project of Justin Vernon and Collections of Colonies of Bees. I've been a long time Bon Iver fan, and when Justin Vernon
announced he was postponing and work with that, I was pretty disappointed. Then this album came out. It's such an incredible
epic rock album that flows and meshes so well. I had the opportunity to see them live, in Eau Claire, where Justin Vernon is
from, and it was one of the best shows I have ever (and probably ever will) go to.
5Chvrches
The Bones of What You Believe

I'm split putting this record so high on my list. The songs that Lauren sings I absolutely adore, but whenever the male vocals
take the lead, I'm not so much a fan. It's a great album though and was just refreshing to here some solid electro pop make
this big a breakthrough.
6Arctic Monkeys
AM

Staying true to old school rock 'n roll. Just a bloody fantastic album.
7 The Head And The Heart
Let's Be Still

Love this band, but wasn't the biggest fan of this album initially. It wasn't as folky as I remember them being. The more I
played it, the more I liked it. I just built the Head and the Heart to be this certain type of band and I wanted them to stay that
way. And they didn't. So that drove me away from it at first, but once I was able to but my bias aside, I was able to dive in and
really enjoy this album.
8Haim
Days Are Gone

There has been a lot of 80's revival this year, what with Chvrches channeling some synth and Arcade Fire putting out a solid
disco album. But Haim is just killing it. Solid album that is just groovy and great fun to listen to start to finish. I get to see these
gals play later in 2014 and I'm looking forward to the concert.
9Portugal. The Man
Evil Friends

I wasn't the biggest fan of their last album, In The Mountain In The Cloud, but I didn't hate it. When I heard this album was
being produced by Danger Mouse, I was really interested to see what the album would sound like. You can definitely hear the
Danger Mouse influence on this record, but Portugal still stays true to themselves. It's just a great upbeat, rock album, and it's
great to hear them comeback with such a vengeance.
10San Fermin
San Fermin

Such a beautiful album, start to finish. It does a really solid job of creating a strong narrative and tells a story through the entire
album. Got a solid blend of upbeat and down tempo songs and is just a amazing record.
11Rhye
Woman

Like most people, I was very thrown off when I found out that the lead vocalist, Michael Milosh, was a man and not a woman. I
think the fact that he does have such a feminine voice, and the album is called woman, and having the main themes be love
and sex just adds a further layer to the album making it all the more enjoyable.
12The World Is A Beautiful Place...
Whenever, If Ever

Came across these guys last year and they dropped their ful length this year. They are some solid emo rock and it's really
refreshing to hear it being done so well.
13Local Natives
Hummingbird

Just a solid little indie rock album, not much more to add.
