Top 50 Of 2013

So, this is my finalized list for the year unless anybody has some last minute rrec's (or something is rreleased in the next few weeks).
1Midas Fall
Wilderness

Very emotional, female-fronted post rock.
2Dark Tranquillity
Construct

Dark Tranquillity really do have their own melodic death metal sound and they
continue to not disappoint.
3Fates Warning
Darkness in a Different Light

After a lengthy hiatus, the band return with another progressive metal masterpiece --
give or take ;)
4Queensryche
Queensryche

Who would have thought that they would ever do something good again?
5Alexa Borden
Flares

Very dreamy and catchy indie pop.
6Soilwork
The Living Infinite

A double album full of some of their best melodic death metal/metalcore.
7Killswitch Engage
Disarm the Descent

Jesse returns and the band stops sucking. Great metalcore.
8Sadistik
Flowers For My Father

Pretty much the only hip-hop album that I liked this year. It has a great atmosphere
and actual intelligent lyrics.
9Carcass
Surgical Steel

Another band makes a triumphant return. Excellent meldodeath.
10Russian Circles
Memorial

What is this? Post rock? Post metal? Whatever it is, it's good.
11Gorguts
Colored Sands

Excellent progressive/atmospheric death metal.
12Sara Bareilles
The Blessed Unrest

Piano-driven pop/indie.
13Heaven Shall Burn
Veto

Another great melodic death metal release. This was the first album that I ever heard
from them and I loved it.
14Hatebreed
The Divinity of Purpose

Hatebreed do what they do best -- quality metallic hardcore.
15Protest the Hero
Volition

I don't consider myself a big fan of this band, but they were able to bring it with this
album. It's more riffy and less of a one-trick pony than a lot of their previous stuff.
16Anacondas
Sub Contra Blues

Fugazi makes a post metal album...
17The Ocean
Pelagial

Proggy post metal... I actually prefer the instrumental version of this more, though.
18Stone Sour
House of Gold and Bones - Part 2

Easily their best album. Above par mainstream metal.
19Bad Religion
True North

Bad Religion will never recapture their 'glory days' but this was a great attempt.
20KMFDM
Kunst

KMFDM will never recapture their glory days either, but another great attempt.
21The Dillinger Escape Plan
One of Us is the Killer

Crazy, noisy metal. Good stuff.
22Atlantean Kodex
The White Goddess (A Grammar of Poetic Myth)

Image Candlemass or Solitude Aeturnus with a thrashier vibe and John Arch (ex-Fates
Warning) on vocals.
23Todtgelichter
Apnoe

The kind of weird progressive metal that only ex-black metal bands seem to be able
to create.
24Medeia
Iconoclastic

They used to be a pretty intense death metal band with some proggy influences. This
album dropped a lot of the intensity, but it's still pretty damn good.
25Funeral For a Friend
Conduit

Funeral For a Friend recapture their early sound (Hours). Sounds good to me.
26Voivod
Target Earth

Technical thrash/metal that harkens back to their eighties sound.
27Abnormal Thought Patterns
Manipulation Under Anesthesia

Instrumental metal with some pretty cool bass playing.
28Felix Martin
The Scenic Album

Instrumental funk, prog, jazz, whatever.
29In Vain
Aenigma

Kind of reminds me of what Draconian could sound like if they replaced the clean
female vocalist with a male vocalist.
3040 Below Summer
Fire at Zero Gravity

Mainstream metal with some proggy, nu-metal, hardcore influences. Exceptional
vocalist.
31Katy McAllister
Take Me Away

Above average pop.
32Tonight Alive
The Other Side

Female-fronted pop punk/alt. rock
33Anneke van Giersbergen
Drive

Anneke kind of takes a step back and does a straight-up alt. rock album. Still good.
34Argus
Beyond the Martyrs

Old school traditional metal done right.
35Shai Hulud
Reach Beyond the Sun

Well done hardcore/metal featuring the guitarist from NFG.
36Enshine
Origin

Atmospheric (death) metal
37Senses Fail
Renacer

Straight up post hardcore without all of the whining. A very surprising release
38Sleigh Bells
Bitter Rivals

Great, noisy, indie pop.
39Device
Device

Disturbed's debut with more industrial influence and stronger songwriting. Sounds
good to me.
40In the Silence
A Fair Dream Gone Mad

One of the new breed of progressive metal bands influenced by Porcupine Tree and/or
Anathema.
41James Labrie
Impermanent Resonance

Another progressive/metalcore hybrid release, but without the focus and strong
songwriting of his previous release.
42Damnations Day
Invisible, the Dead

Power/Prog metal
43Sannhet
Known Flood

Instrumental post metal with a prominent black metal influence.
44Love and Death
Between Here And Lost

Sounds like Korn with the singer from Sixx A.M. -- but it's good :)
45Cassadee Pope
Frame by Frame

Country pop.
46Ellie Herring
Kite Day

Catchy/poppy ambient electronics.
47Persefone
Spiritual Migration

Well-done tech death.
48Anciients
Heart of Oak

Heavy progressive metal with black metal/post metal influences.
49Exxasens
Satellites

Post Rock with electronic influences
50Ulcerate
Vermis

Technical Death metal with a very dark atmosphere.
