| Record Stores
My opinions on some record stores I've visited. Mostly Texas. | 1 | | Ghost B.C. Opus Eponymous
Good Records - Located on lower Greenville Ave in Dallas, TX, this shop is by far the best shop in Dallas, it's got a really nice selection that spans a lot of genres, even if they are lacking in certain genres of heavy metal. Everything is laid out in a very inviting way, with a wide open lower level, and stairs leading to a small alcove of a second floor, which accommodates CD's from S-Z (for lack of room on the lower level). They have good performances, a welcoming attitude, and keep a nice balance between popularity and obscurity in their selection. | 2 | | Cromagnon Orgasm
Bill's Records - People say it's a Dallas music landmark, they say it's lack of organization adds to the charm, as does the ever-present smell of smoke. These people are lying to you. I would venture to say every single album is in poor to fair condition, the smoke is suffocating at times, and nothing makes sense. There are literally piles upon piles of un sleeved 7"s scattered at random across multiple shelves. There are no new releases except for a scant local acts section. It's down right depressing inside Bill's Records. | 3 | | Pallbearer Sorrow and Extinction
Forever Young Records - Located in Grand Prairie, it's a pretty big commitment to visit this store unless you actually live in Grand Prairie. It is by far the most expansive collection of music I've ever seen in one place. The store itself is inside what I believe is an old barn (akin to what a farmer would use to store equipment, not where cows and pigs and chickens live). It's actually overwhelming walking in and seeing the sheer magnitude of the amount of vinyl, CDs, t-shirts, jewel-cases and everything in between. The range of genres is superb, they've got a really cool separate room for highly valuable records, and a really warm vibe despite the warehouse like interior. It's definitely worth your time to make a trip to Forever Young. | 4 | | Howl Full of Hell
Waterloo Records - Austin, Texas... This store is wholly underwhelming. They've got a nice selection, especially for the softer indie music lover, but the feeling I get in Waterloo is just a very mechanical and uninspiring one. It almost feels like I'm in the music section of a Target, with real music being in stock though. It's not really a bad store, just lacks some of the charm I look for in a record store. | 5 | | Kylesa Static Tensions
Skully'z Recordz - Smack dab in the middle of the French Quarter, this store bleeds charm just like the city it's in, New Orleans, LA, and it's right on par with the size of my dorm room. Somehow, they are able to squeeze in some really interesting and varied releases spanning many genres. It's also very laid back, a store you can just kind of happen upon and be swept away by it's unassuming allure. | 6 | | Clutch Earth Rocker
Reckless Records - Chicago, IL. An overall good store, the selection is what makes this one a stand out. While it doesn't have much in the way of unique decoration, or unique offers for the customers, any music lover could go in there and find something that'll make the trip worth their while. | 7 | | Torche Harmonicraft
Hogwild Records & Tapes - The only store I've been to in San Antonio, TX. This one is like heaven for my dad and I. The emphasis here is on metal, punk, and hardcore, with metal the dominating force. The vibe in this store is catered to the metalhead across all ages. If you've ever thought there wasn't a store where you could find anything from glam to tech-death, from classic black metal to stoner doom, think again. | 8 | | Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats Mind Control
Vinal Edge - Hailing from Houston, TX, this shop has a very satisfying metal and punk selection, satisfying my need for heaviness, while also offering a wide array of prog (like a LOT of prog), world music, and avant-garde. It's also within walking 100 feet from a cigar lounge AND a good coffee shop. The Holy Trinity. | 9 | | Steely Dan Countdown to Ecstasy
Sig's Lagoon - Houston again. Very quaint store, with a killer used classics section upstairs, and a very crowd pleasing range of underground music in rotation. This store also benefits from excellent location, next to The Continental Club (which I still need to catch a show at), a slew of interesting shops/restaurants, and a coffee and cocktail bar. Very hip though, be forewarned. | 10 | | Red Sparowes The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein...
Cactus Music - The first record store I visited in Houston, very similar to the feel of Good Records, but still uniquely Houstonian. The staff are very welcoming, the vinyl selection is welld and varied, and there always seems to be an in-store happening, caught American Sharks, and a newer Seattle group called Cumulus, both of which I was very happy to see for free. They also serve free St. Arnold's beer at every live performance, so that rules. | |
