I actually got Yoshimi on vinyl for Christmas, and in listening to it today I have some mixed feelings... The beginning is really very strong, from Fight Test - Yoshimi pt. 2 is probably one of the most beautiful stretches they've ever recorded. But then the middle of the album is so much more spacey, and you could also say more empty, or it lacks the tautness which makes Soft Bulletin so strong all the way through - although the ending of the album, primarily All We Have Is Now and Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloons, is awesome.
Okay so that diatribe aside: shamefully I've only heard from Soft Bulletin on, and I'm also missing At War With The Mystics. BUT, I really like the band and have felt and thought a lot about all the albums I have heard. I like what you said foxxxy about Embryonic being a rebirth. I suppose my feelings toward it is that it's SO sprawling that it really hard to digest, and since it's also way more abrasive then the three albums before it it's then easier to dislike? But with that said, every time I explore Embryonic there are very amazing moments to it, it's just more of a case of excavating, rather than them being ones that I take away (like, say with Yoshimi or Bulletin)
And then more on that point, I think their new process for song writing shines even greater in The Terror, in that it has a more expansive nature to it, yet the individual parts also stand out a bit more. Though, that's not to say I think The Terror is better than Embryonic.
But damn, I really need to get on their older material. |
