10.21.13 | Those DeVilles are sweet. I'm just lucky that my Laney VH100R (also the loudest head I've ever played... combined with a proper 4x12 and the band bitches with the volume on 1.5ish) keeps me satisfied enough that I have yet to cave and buy one. |

10.21.13 | It's one of the only amps I can put gain on my Gretsch Electromatic and not have it sound like a fart. The reverb is fucking amazing too. It sounds like a twin verb. |
chemicalmarriage
10.21.13 | nahh i believe a twin sounds like a twin, but have fun anyways |

10.21.13 | Nice! Been meaning to pick up an amp once I have some spare cash floating about. Should really stop dicking about with my money. Nice list too, I recently jammed 1 and 2. |
Butkuiss
10.21.13 | Yeah, I've been getting by borrowing off other people and going through my bass amp but now that I own two guitars and play guitar in a band I needed an actual gigging amp. The Deville is beautiful though. Nicest combo I've ever played. |
bloc
10.22.13 | Personally not a fan of this amp. |
wacknizzle
10.22.13 | Sweet amp, the overdrive on it is fucking tight. Plus it has the legendary Fender clean tone, and that awesome spring reverb |
Butkuiss
10.22.13 | @Bloc: My hollow body Gretsch has the darkest tone I've ever heard in a guitar, and while the DeVille isn't perfect it's one of the only amps that sufficiently brightens up the tone to the point where I can play mid/high gain stuff, and even then I have the bass cut to 2.
Now I just need to find a pedal that will boost the clean channel to just break up and I'll be set. |
eternium
10.22.13 | It's a great amp but it can't do metal very well. |
bloc
10.22.13 | Yeah it's quite a bright amp. Would suit a hollow body very nicely. |
Butkuiss
10.22.13 | @Eternium: Most of what I play these days is folk, post-rock or hardcore with a bit of sludge and the amp seems to handle all of em nicely. |
bloc
10.23.13 | Fender never did metal anyway. |
Butkuiss
10.23.13 | Metal is so passé |
Athom
10.23.13 | Neurosis use Fender Twins. Fenders are one of the best platforms for taking pedals. If you are dependent on your amp's own OD for heavier tones then, yeah, it's gonna be a bad choice for metal, but just about anyone who is willing to spend that much on an amp probably already has a series of pedals that they depend on more so (unless you're a fan of that rectifier squat) |
sapient
10.23.13 | I've got an Egnater Armageddon 120w. It's loud. |
fr33convict
10.23.13 | If your playing style gels with it and you have decent pickups, a Fender SuperSonic (might have that name wrong) can get fairly decent old school metal tones. But yeah, most Fender amps refuse to metal without excessive amounts of pedal distortion. |
bloc
10.23.13 | Yeah that Armageddon is nuts. Comes with a built in ISP Decimator which is such an awesome feature to have. Hell, I paid 140 for that thing in pedal form. Works great.
I also set up my amp as a platform for pedals most of the time. But still, high gain from a cranked amp sounds way better than what any pedal can pull off. |
Butkuiss
10.23.13 | I tried out a supersonic with the DeVille and the clean tone was just ugh. So much quack. I'd rather have a nice amp clean and just add OD or fuzz to my chain to compensate if the gain tones are off.
Fender twins are beautiful. |

This. Just that made me want one so bad until I played one and realized I didn't quite like the way it responded with my playing style and just bought the pedal for the Laney. Still a pretty cool amp.
Twins are probably my favorite amp, actually. |
Athom
10.23.13 | @bloc I think that comes down to preference. For natural overdrives, I'd say nothing beats cranked EL34's (I find 6L6's to be too tight for my overall tastes), but I'm more of a fuzz guy for distortions. Even when I want that really tight and punchy modern sound I'd rather use my AmpTweaker tightmetal than a 6505 just because I can EQ the mids back in and actually keep some of my natural sustain. But mostly I just use my russian Muff. |
sapient
10.23.13 | yeah bloc, I've attempted distortion pedals from so many brands, but none of them match the tone of an amp with distortion built in, especially the armageddon. plus the decimator lets you crank up the distortion even further and still keep a tight sound |
sapient
10.23.13 | that's why I like the decimator, because you can dial in how much sound reduction you want. Generally
when playing metal (like I usually do), I have it cranked a good deal to keep it tight, but then I can
roll it back when I want to get more feedback and keep it looser |
bloc
10.23.13 | Yeah it's definitely just a matter of taste. After buying my latest amp I've realized I'm an EL guy too. And I can't deny that I have two overdrive pedals in my setup that get used quite often.
My first tube amp was an Egnater Tweaker, so that company will always be dear to me. |
Butkuiss
10.23.13 | Ugh accidentally deleted my insightful comment fuck typing on my phone in class. Tl;dr the overdrives ive tried have too many overtones and not enough tube drive and I like loose gain. |
bloc
10.23.13 | The Decimator is EASILY the best noise gate you can buy. It's smart in the sense that it doesn't immediately choke your notes off (unless you want it to) and allows for a pretty natural decay. I don't play metal either, but just having it to eliminate hum from a loud amp and several pedals turned on at the same time is a good enough reason to have it.
Despite what I said before, there are definitely some genuine sounding pedals out there. I tend to use mine as clean boosts (where the level control is much higher than the gain control) to get a more natural sound. |
sapient
10.23.13 | the only pedal that I currently use is a Boss Super Chorus pedal, gets some nice sounds. Considering eventually getting a good Flanger cause I love getting really space-y clean tones |
Butkuiss
10.23.13 | Not even a delay? I'm running a DD3 until my flashback comes.
I just wish the reverb on the DeVille was foot switchable. |
sapient
10.23.13 | EDIT: delay as well. I could get some cool chiming sounds like Tool does :p |
bloc
10.24.13 | TC Electronic is killing it right now. I have their HOF Reverb, and was going to get a Flashback but decided I wanted a different brand name for every pedal I owned. Thus, I went with the Digitech Hardwire Delay. |
Butkuiss
10.28.13 | If the DeVille had footswitchable Reverb I wouldn't need a verb pedal but nooo it's only manual dial so I'll probably pick up a Holy Grail. |
