| Works That Changed My Perception Of Music
No matter what rating I gave these, these works (because one of them isn't ran album, per se) rrhave changed the way I look at music as a whole. | 1 | | Fleetwood Mac Rumours
Holy shit, I don't think I've ever come across a more perfect album. I should have
placed this in my last "Greatest Albums" list because it absolutely deserves it; well,
it'll go into the next of that. This album does what very few records have
done: it blends compositional sophistication and emotion perfectly. Academics can
laud it for bringing more complex and multi-faceted arrangements to classic rock,
while the rockers can laud the emotive lyric, great singing, and well-executed
instrumentation. It has something for everyone, and it's so rare to have an album
so universally enjoyed. I love this album, and it shows just how a perfect balance
can be made out of internal struggles and turmoil. | 2 | | The Tallest Man on Earth The Wild Hunt
The album that introduced me to the world of folk music, The Wild Hunt was what
got me off my progressive/metal ass to explore more styles. The entire album is
brimming with fantastic guitar playing and hopeful lyrics. The lyrics don't come off
as sappy though, but rather genuinely inspiring. Plus, this one got me through a
tough time in my life and I owe a lot of my current enjoyment of music to it. | 3 | | Gustav Holst The Planets, Op. 32
After years of playing and listening to the typical classics like Bach, Mozart, and
Beethoven, The Planets completely blew me away. I never heard classical music
composed or performed this way and it was refreshing to hear how it
evolved over the years. Each piece sets a different mood than the last, but Jupiter
has to be my personal favorite. Beginning with a thunderous whirlwind of strings
and horns, it progresses through a complex series of modulations until reaching a
beautiful hymn-like middle section. Great stuff. But yeah, was the game-changer of
classical music for me. | 4 | | Alice in Chains Dirt
Yeah, you probably knew this would be here. Whenever anybody says the grunge
and 90s music as a whole was shit, this is the album I request that they listen to. A
perfect storm of grunge, sludge metal, doom metal, classic rock, and other styles,
Dirt is a harrowing journey into the psyche of the band as they deal with their
personal struggles. I relate to this album a lot during my depressive moments, and
highly appreciate the music for how diverse and generally well-written it is. It
influenced me with my own music, and I know it did the same to tons of other
musicians worldwide. | 5 | | King Crimson In the Court of the Crimson King
I was just a child when I first listened to this, and at the time, my favorite bands
were Journey, Queen, and Styx. Holy hell, imagine my reaction when I first heard
this! I heard nothing like this before, and I haven't heard anything like it since.
While I can't give it a 5/5 (for Moonchild's improv section mainly), it was a huge
early influence for me to go by. When I was primarily listening to classic rock and
classical, this really stunned me and opened the world of progressive rock to me
(and I think Porcupine Tree were another one of my first prog bands as well). I still
love this and respect it for the impact it made on me and others. | |
