GnFnRs87
10.10.13 | I feel it's gonna be the best years of my life too and I've been here for 3 weeks. Where did you study ? |
bruf
10.10.13 | The University of Derby, by far the most prestigious university in Derby. Looking into MA in the near future. Yourself? |

10.10.13 | post-college life is infinitely better unless u suck |
bruf
10.10.13 | The post- involves mornings and shit |
GnFnRs87
10.10.13 | Manchester, not exactly that prestigious but I like the city and the course ..... Getting ridiculously drunk and enjoying any study, about all I could ask for really |
Ecksavie
10.10.13 | lol undergrad |
SrightryEpic
10.10.13 | What am I doing wrong. |
Ecksavie
10.10.13 | Probably picked the wrong subject. I bet these dudes are doing business or some other easy as shit subject whilst you're
likely getting shafted by English literature. |
SrightryEpic
10.10.13 | shafted by physics* |

10.10.13 | Satellite is so full of shit it's not even funny |

10.10.13 | physics was hella easy |
Ecksavie
10.10.13 | lol physics, you daft cunt |
bruf
10.10.13 | English Lit for me - was a breeze, apart from the dissertation. Manchester is a sweet place, the uni is pretty solid from what I hear. |
Ecksavie
10.10.13 | Shit, you enjoyed uni whilst doing English lit? Machine, bro. Dissertations are the worst, yup. |
Satellite
10.10.13 | "Satellite is so full of shit it's not even funny"
huh? |

10.10.13 | @ GnFnRs87
Get laid, deliver your homework on time, seek out any exchange student program, and you will have a blast at the university. |
bruf
10.10.13 | Some moments involving poststructuralism made me weep somewhat, but only inside so it doesn't count |
Ecksavie
10.10.13 | @Bruf: I totally feel you, anything with the "post" prefix is a piece of shit. Currently still writing the thesis for my MSc in Sociology/Politics at the University of Edinburgh, which means my life is one long existential crisis. |
Ecksavie
10.10.13 | I'd also like to add "don't go to grad school" to Voivod's excellent advice. |

10.10.13 | so your life is worse now? (i'm assuming you're a college grad) |
GnFnRs87
10.10.13 | I'm actually doing English and History combined honours, and I really am enjoying it so far .... Then again I haven't actually done a ton of work yet so maybe that'll change .....
Voivod, that is a great plan |

Satellite
10.10.13 | oh certainly not. the "post-college life" i was referring to involves having a career and shit, though.
the main thing i remember about college (not that it was more than a couple yrs ago) is being fucking broke constantly. hungry, too. i enjoy having enough money to buy weed AND pay rent without having to work some shit job in my free time. i also hated everything about going to class. all of the rad shit that made college fun is still ongoing for me. that's what i meant. |
klap
10.10.13 | i think it depends on your college experience then. i have a career too (i only go to school two days/week and am almost done), but college was a lot more free |
LambsBread
10.10.13 | college is fun. |
Ecksavie
10.10.13 | @GnFnRs87: First year is a dole, enjoy it while it lasts. |

anarchistfish
10.11.13 | yah it's pretty great so far
wondering whether I should've done something like psychology or philosophy instead though |
Devolve
10.11.13 | I know nobody at my university besides a kid who went to high school with me. I've been told you get the real, actually fun experience if you live on campus... |

10.11.13 | "yah it's pretty great so far

HA, well then I'm your man if you have any questions. I did psych at Bath (best course in the country at the time - I think Cambridge do straight psych now though) but found it boring, dropped out at the end of year 1 and am now elbow deep in philosophy at Bristol. Fire away if you want. |
anarchistfish
10.11.13 | dude you go to bristol? first year? |
StrangerofSorts
10.11.13 | and not to offend anyone, but if someone gives me at least a little reason to begin a rant against psychology I'm going to take it. |
StrangerofSorts
10.11.13 | i do man yeah -this is going to get weird isn't it? |
anarchistfish
10.11.13 | probably
what hall are you in?
my flatmate's first year philosophy too |
StrangerofSorts
10.11.13 | Goldney, you?
Might have met your flatmate - been pretty sociable so far. Up for putting a name+description here? |
anarchistfish
10.11.13 | I'm in UH.
thena mimmack? |
slagun
10.11.13 | yeah uni is good, anybody else studying in london? |
anarchistfish
10.11.13 | nah fuck that, I'm from london but didn't apply to any of the unis there |
Buzzkillr
10.11.13 | >liberal arts
if you aren't doing STEM, good luck using your degree to land a decent job |
StrangerofSorts
10.11.13 | Ah that's cool - all the people I've met from UH seem decent. It's just a shame you guys are in the middle of nowhere.
Can't say I've met her - would probably remember a name like that. What are you studying btw? |
anarchistfish
10.11.13 | stoke bishop's fun, and UH has a great vibe. a lot of people concentrated here, but yeah, we're a bit of the way as a community which is a pain. I have to take the bus like 4 times a day.
I'm doing geography with study abroad. Actually I have a lecture in 40 minutes so I should probably sort my shit out soon cos I wanna get some chocolate buttons from sainsbury's first and then I have to find the chemistry lecture hall cos none of our lectures are actually in the geography building
all the philosophy students I've met so far are total hipsters, lol |
StrangerofSorts
10.11.13 | "if you aren't doing STEM, good luck using your degree to land a decent job"
Well unless your criteria for a decent job is being a doctor or engineer, this isn't true at all. The vast majority of "decent" jobs just require a 2:1 in a decent degree from a decent uni. |
StrangerofSorts
10.11.13 | Well with Bristol + philosophy it was bound to happen, really. It's always funny when we have a lecture (which we do have, occasionally) in the engineering block and it couldn't be more obvious we don't really belong there.
Fair enough, hit me up on facebook sometime and we'll meet up. |
guitarded_chuck

yes a degree takes you out of the bottom of the barrel and separates you somewhat but unfortunately a liberal arts degree is just going to put you in a massive pile with everyone else
just sayin it's true, real world shi |
apert
10.11.13 | Yeah Slagun I'm at Imperial, where are you studying? |

dunno lad, my experience of friends in the job market suggests the kind of degree you do (as long as it's a "proper" one) is pretty negligible in a lot of cases. Besides, there's a heap more you can do on top of a degree which matters more - work experience etc. |
slagun
10.11.13 | @apert im at UCL man, which year are you in? |
anarchistfish
10.11.13 | the type of degree you do isn't very important unless you wanna become a doctor or an engineer or something |
anarchistfish
10.11.13 | "Fair enough, hit me up on facebook sometime and we'll meet up."
lol ok but I got a new account for university and then barely touched it |
Buzzkillr

which are pretty much the only jobs in demand right now that pay well |

And this is when you undertake a masters degree in a more specialized area of your chosen field. |
apert
10.11.13 | 2nd year doing medicine, what about you |
Buzzkillr
10.11.13 | 'okay'
nah man we'll see where you're at in a few years |

10.11.13 | probably doing alright for myself |

more time and money, but sure if you have plenty of that to spare

the former is p much not true, and yes experience matters, but it has to be relevant experience, of which is hard to get in the first place without applicable education |
