10.03.13 32 Favorite Bands For My 32nd Bday

32 Favorite Bands For My 32nd Bday

Self Explanatory, in no order
1Pearl Jam

Was my favorite growing up and also have had the best longevity of any grunge era
band.
2Modest Mouse

They got me into indie back in the day when some cool broad gave me building
nothing out of something. Moon and Antartica followed, I was hooked.
3NoFX

I was a warped tour kid, saw the first like 7 warped tours, NoFX was the best,
funny and great songs, great live show.
4Minus the Bear

Really really loved the bands older material, it was so different than anything else
and yet still so accessible to the casual listener. I wish the pop/electronica sound
they have now would take a backseat to knudson and tates unbelievable chops.
5Ben Harper

IMO the best musician from my lifetime. Also possibly the best live show I've seen.
6Arctic Monkeys

Its not often a band can live up to their unreal hype, but they did, and then they
never made the same album again, good for them!
7Portugal. The Man

They opened for Primus and stole the show, I downloaded their discog and all of
the sudden had like 5 ridiculously good albums.
8Against Me!

Got into these guys late in the game which sucks, but I'll still listen to everything
they've done pre White Crosses anyday. Also Tom/laura is one of the best
songwriters imo. Also, their lyrics pretty much never rhyme, which takes talent to
make it sound good.
9Tool

Maynard, Carey, Jones, Chancellor (sp?) pretty much a supergroup.
10P.O.S.

Left the rap genre for a long time until I heard about this guy and the doomtree crew.
11Rage Against The Machine

One of my favorites growing up, cobo hall show 1997 was the craziest live show I
have ever seen. Too bad the paved the way for so many crappy imitation bands.
12Sublime

Again a warped tour show that got me into these guys. Then Brad died liek months
after I saw them. I used to get ripped on for listening to sublime and then they
were like the biggest band in the late 90's early 00's, funny how that shit works
out.
13Louis Armstrong

Should write a disclaimer, I'm not a super fan of Louis but his music ALWAYS makes
me happy and takes me back to college days.
14Death Cab For Cutie

Even my mom likes this band but even with that said, they are super talented and
Gibbard is a great lyricist. Walla is a tech master.
15Blind Melon

Late to this band too. I had their debut as a kid but never listened to it much.
Shannon Hoon had such a unique voice and great lyrics.
16Built To Spill

Indie masters
17Outkast

Just on a different level from other rappers, quality stuff always.
18Van Morrison

Yeha i could pretty much listen to him sing the phone book and like it. One of a
kind voice.
19The Cat Empire

Great summer music from a not well known band here in 'Merica. Would love to see
these guys live.
20Jurassic 5

Chali 2na was a badass in Ozomatli, kinda wish he woulda stayed with them but J5
rules and live they rule harder.
21Flight of the Concords

You could call them a novelty band but they are so much better than that. If you
are a music fan and dont find "Bowie" hilarious you have probs.
22Less Than Jake

Although I don't listen to them a lot anymore at one time ska was my shit, and Less
Than Jake was my favorite. Pezcore, Losers Kings..., Losing Streak still awesome.
23Cat Stevens

Again, the voice, just could listen to him all day.
24Neil Young

Big part of my childhood and also probably the most twangy musician I listen to on
the reg.
25Wilco

Tweedy rules and they have quite a catalog, and most of their albums sound
different from one another. Summerteeth is my favorite.
26Neutral Milk Hotel

Sister gave me Aeroplane back in 2000 after my Grandma died. It struck a cord
with me and I likened that album to Dark Side to my friends. They didn't get it. I
never realized it was such a critical success until I was on here.
27Violent Femmes

Fuck everyone who knows this band for just Blister in the Sun.
28The Suicide Machines

This is more on here for the fact that they would play Flint all the time when I was
a kid and my mom would let me go to the shows with my sister. They were loud
fast and pretty good. Of course back then They were Jack kevorkian and The
Suicide Machines and I thought their name was sweet as well.
29Astronautalis

Just started listening to Astro but I like how he has so much isaac brock in his
delivery. Just totally different from most hip hop.
30The Temptations

Gotta have at least 1 motown on here tough choice between them and Marvin.
31System of a Down

Cool band and I love the dichotomy of Serj and Derron (sp?). It always kind of
puzzled me how these guys had the commercial success they had with their sound.
Also I wish they would fucking get along so they would tour.
32Jimi Hendrix

Because he's my favorite from the old guys era. Also love Mitch Mitchells drums.
