09.27.13 | im tentatively excited for it, im fucking tired of this action sci-fi bullshit and cauron should be able to craft something that stimulated more than my cornea.
btw have you seen ghost in the shell? its similar to akira but i think it's just a tad better. |

09.27.13 | That's another thing, Hype. His past work is almost all gold.
And it's on my list! |

09.27.13 | How old is "ghost in the shell" bc that phrase is said on deltron 3030 and that's the only time I've ever heard anyone say it. |
Hyperion1001
09.27.13 | 1995, its 7 years older than akira, and while akira is a much more important film, i like the low key atmosphere and introspective ponderings a bit more
the scene where the main character is diving underwater is perhaps the best scene in all of japanese animation, both on a visceral and thematic level |

09.27.13 | It's as old as me, wow |

09.27.13 | The first couple of times I watched Prometheus, I was really disappointed, but I've actually come around to it quite it bit. It's a great movie to watch with a group of people too, because I feel like there are a lot of different ways to perceive the movie. |

Pretty much, though I hear that the space bits aren't the full focus of the film so there may be hope; that premise just isn't enough for me to care. |

10.03.13 | Werd. I heard it was 3D but actually good. I like when they use 3d for depth, which I'm guessing will be it's main purpose considering the movie is set in space. |

10.21.13 | its more than visually stunning really which is why i think it works so well
ive seen it twice now and im pretty sure its an allegory for genesis, with george cloony being god. even without that there is some really well done surface level symbolic imagery dealing with impregnation and rebirth.
i like it because cauron knew he couldnt make the film too inaccessible for it to be a major hit (and warrant all the money put behind it) but he layered it enough to warrant multiple viewings to really uncover everything thats going on both visually and thematically, which i really admire
definitely deserving of most of it's praise i think. |

10.21.13 | "ive seen it twice now and im pretty sure its an allegory for genesis, with george cloony being god. even without that there is some really well done surface level symbolic imagery dealing with impregnation and rebirth."
I haven't thought about that specifically, but I can see it with the whole part of her having to deal with the grieving of her child and what not. Interesting point of view. |
TMobotron
10.21.13 | sandra bullock is so fuckable |
Hyperion1001
10.21.13 | i knew there was something more to it when i saw it the first time, because there are quite a few shots that have religious iconography in them (the buddha, the russian figure in their escape pod, etc.). its also informed by the fact that they made bullock look pretty androgynous (she embodies both the male and female halves of the genesis story)
and the scene with cloony coming back stuck in my mind because even when you rationalize it as a subconscious vision to bring fourth her dormant training (which works fine in the surface plot of the movie) it still seemed kind of out of place. but when you look at cloony as being god, he is actually functioning to bring bullock's faith (her ability to pray that she was never taught) to guide her through with clear headed determination (and resumes speaking to houston even though she doesnt know if they can hear her, i.e. god).
in the end it is her regained faith which guides her back to earth, or genesis. |

10.21.13 | "the scene was silly. about as silly as when we disagree and I just begin to type whatever seems to get under your skin."
It's a little bit scary that you would give me this extra attention, and while I agree that it's silly that you do it would be a shame to think that you've ever succeeded
To be honest I don't personally see the Genesis references specifically, I don't really see anything relating to sin or disobedience beyond the first 5 minutes, but I do see the film as an allegory for rebirth and the evolution of life |
