08.22.13 | so, who's all been to paris before and could recommend me stuff to do? |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | comeon sputnik gimme the culture |
Shuyin
08.22.13 | why would anyone in their perfectly clear mind go to paris?.. fucking french people
they're like.. the worst |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | it must be one of the most visited cities for a reason, shuyin!
for the record, been 'learning' french for about 6 years so that's my main reason for going |
Shuyin
08.22.13 | aah i hate their language too, seriously if i ever went to france id have to shoot people.. with real bullets |
tommygun
08.22.13 | worst place i've ever been
have fun! |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | fish is gonna be pissed
that bad, tommy? |
Shuyin
08.22.13 | dude, come to portugal, youll have the very best times
we got the chicks and places n shit |
MO
08.22.13 | been there twice. but going once was more than enough for me to realize that it's overrated to shit.
go to the south of france. marseille, nice, aix-en-provence, montpellier, toulouse, etc
you'll have a way better time and it's much more beautiful |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | "we got the chicks and places n shit"
damn i didn't realise those three wonderful drawing points were missing from paris!
was it the tourist-y attractions you disliked, MO? going to be doing a couple of them (notre dame, sacrecoeur etc..) but for the most part i'm hoping to experience 'Little Paris' ie jaunting around bars and cafes trying to mix with locals |
MO
08.22.13 | I mean the sites and everything have their appeal of course. But after spending more than 3 or so days there I realized all you're doing is going to famous sites, waiting hours in line (especially the eiffel tower or the louvre) to see something for 15 minutes, and just flocking where all the tourists go. that being said if you're going to mainly stay away from sites and mix with the locals that's sweet, just be wary of scumbags (my gf was approached a few times and I had to step up and get them to fuck off, kinda sketch).
it's always noisy, so unless you're staying in a 4-5 star have fun getting a good nights sleep. the people are snobs.
some other notes. the moulin rouge show definitely is all its cracked up to be. but it's a 180 EURO show (at least it was that much when I went like 6 years ago so I'd imagine it's gone waaay up). so be ready to fork out huge amounts. don't go on a guided tour of versailles. go it your own way, you'll have way more fun since you can just walk anywhere you want, totally free reign.
I'll try and remember more, I always block out paris when I think of france so yea. have fun at least. |
MO
08.22.13 | **edit louvre takes more than 15 minutes, just using all sites as a general example |

dude, brother
I've been learnin your language
investing myself in your culture (kind of)
and this is how you repay me |
anarchistfish
08.22.13 | paris is a bit overrated though. nice tourist attractions, sure, but the culture isn't anything you can't get better elsewhere.
loire valley's where my family's from and it's gorgeous
south of france is awesome too. provence, the tarn valley (just spent a week there and it's all rolling hills totally covered in forest), azure coast, the mountains
even the massif central is pretty sweet |
Shuyin
08.22.13 | im a real dick, but admit it, we rule face
come to Porto for a few days, youll never want to leave |
tommygun
08.22.13 | south rules |

08.22.13 | List needs Supertramp - Paris |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | @MO,
depending on the size of the queue, we may or may not do the eiffel tower, i guess it's p much essential but i'm genuinely not that bothered about it. definitely avoiding the louvre, i'm not a major art buff by any means but queueing for several hours to see a tiny painting enclosed in bullet-proof glass is bloody unappealing.
i'm actually sure the pricing i saw for the moulin rouge show was considerably cheaper, around 100 euros, if i recall correctly - i've looked it up and yeah, it looks really great.
thanks for the advice about versailles too! |
Relinquished
08.22.13 | portugal runs through shuyin's veins so stay the fuck away from it |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | @fish
saving some money to do some travelling across the country possibly next summer, so i'll hopefully be able to experience provincial france in all its glory
although i might just blow it getting a few nights scattered over europe- berlin, rome etc etc |
anarchistfish
08.22.13 | also parisians are proper dicks
make the rest of us look bad |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | maybe central ones just because of the fact that it's so damn hectic 24/7 but we're in montmartre so hopefully its more chill |
MrSirLordGentleman
08.22.13 | I thought french from the south were dicks too... Like people from Marseille |
anarchistfish
08.22.13 | people from marseille just stab you |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | swiftly crossing Marseille off my list of places to live in when older.. |

08.22.13 | "i'm actually sure the pricing i saw for the moulin rouge show was considerably cheaper, around 100 euros, if i recall correctly - i've looked it up and yeah, it looks really great."
the thing is. I'm pretty sure they list the price MINUS the mandatory bottle of champagne you have to buy when you actually sit down at your table. yes there is a bottle of champagne you have to buy, there's no way around it. |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | those sneaky bastards.
i suppose it'll all be a little too much if two heterosexual blokes go to the moulin rouge show and tuck in to a bottle of champagne.. |
anarchistfish
08.22.13 | what if you just say no |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | then they might just not let us in, they're particularly strict i think, especially with recording devices |
zakalwe
08.22.13 | I'm sticking up for Paris and the French, it's a great city but it's same as London in as much as stick to the centre. Don't venture into the suburbs unless you want to get robbed, stabbed, engage in conversation with a nutter or end up in a riot. |
anarchistfish
08.22.13 | london's better. the "centre"'s huge - there's so much to do |
DominionMM1
08.22.13 | i enjoyed paris when i was there. and i didn't find parisians to be any more dickish than anyone else living in a huge city. |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | i don't think it was ever my intention to knowingly wander into a quartier/banlieue/whatever but i appreciate the instruction! |
anarchistfish
08.22.13 | they are though |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | let's face it wouldn't we all be dickish if we got in constant, five-lane traffic jams and had tourists in our faces all the time |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | only thing i'm nervous about is navigating the Metro, i ain't used to anything like that, i'm a small town kid. |
DominionMM1
08.22.13 | "come to Porto for a few days, youll never want to leave"
kinda hard to get from europe to south america like that |
MrSirLordGentleman
08.22.13 | Metro can be fun to use :D... when it's a decent metro... cough cough NYC cough cough |
Typhoner
08.22.13 | I went to Paris last month and didn't visit the Eiffel Tower (who cares about being on there anyway?) and pretty much avoided the Notre Dame region. Only visit the Louvre in case you have a clear image of want you want to see, I actually prefer Musée d'Orsay (more recent art, 1800 and later) and Centre Pompidou (contemporary art, if only for the great building - there's also a Lichtenstein retrospective if you're into that kind of art).
Also, remember that, even if you're in a touristic part of Paris, it usually only takes a five-minute walk to reach a calmer neighbourhood with nice (and cheaper) bars and restaurants. I stayed close to Montmartre and it was pretty quiet at night, although that depends on the street/hotel. And otherwise, just walk around and see for yourself |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | @Dominion
wat
@MSLG
is that implicating that nyc's metro is good or what i don't even.. |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | Typhoner, where abouts in Montmartre were you? I'm holing up in a cheap-ass 2 star just off Bvd de Clichy (that long road with the Moulin Rouge on it) |
Typhoner
08.22.13 | It wasn't in Montmartre, exactly - close to Place de L'Europe. I can imagine your hotel will be a bit less calm. I hope your hotel will be any good, because hotels in Paris don't really have a great reputation. (my hotel was 3 star and was actually pretty nice).
Oh, don't be surprised by the huge amount of Chinese tourists. Just saying. |
anarchistfish
08.22.13 | "(who cares about being on there anyway?)"
7m people a year |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | oh i'm completely used to asians, they're all over my uni, always falling asleep at library desks
i saw one filling their own kettle from the water fountain there once
my hotel has 75% from hostelworld so it can't be all bad, i'll only really be sleeping there anyway so it was more a case of finding something affordable with mostly positive reviews |
MrSirLordGentleman
08.22.13 | @Infamous
NYC metro is the worst and dirtiest thing in the world |
InfamousGrouse
08.22.13 | luckily since my french is adequate i won't feel like steve buscemi here on the Metro then:
