08.16.13 | List is a re-do of my greatest indie bands list. |
AliW1993
08.16.13 | Already there. Entering my final year. Unhappy that I'm about to waste another year of my life.
Terrified that in a year's time I'll be thrown kicking and screaming into the real world.
Solid list. |
zakalwe
08.16.13 | Good list.
Dropped out back in the day and it's one of the greatest decisions I have made.
Uni is wank, learn a trade. |
jefflebowski
08.16.13 | off to exeter to do physics with astro in a few weeks
did you get your a level results today dude? |
InfamousGrouse
08.16.13 | starting 3rd year in september bitches, can't wait to spend 9-5 shifts daily pouring over academic sources sweet |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | Off to the University of Bristol |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | Almost went to Exeter |
apert
08.16.13 | Starting 2nd year of med school at imperial, providing I pass the retake exams |
apert
08.16.13 | Everyone at my school seems to be going to Exeter for some reason |
ffs
08.16.13 | i go to sunderland because i am scum |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | Yeah I know loads of people going to Exeter. It was only my insurance but I'm kinda gonna miss not having that gorgeous campus. Worth it though |
jefflebowski
08.16.13 | it's a bit private school (read: full of dickheads in jack wills) but i couldn't say no to the campus, it's ridiculous |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | Pretty much every university I applied to was private schooley, maybe with the exception of Sheffield. Exeter's campus almost sold it to me alone, it's unbelievable, but Bristol the city, come on... |
apert
08.16.13 | Yeah I went to private school, and most people seem to want to go to Exeter or Durham, guess they have a reputation for lots of private school kids |
apert
08.16.13 | You made the right choice, Bristol is better IMO |
jefflebowski
08.16.13 | yeah a few of my friends are off to bristol and they've all said how great it looks, i guess i was pretty set on a campus uni though so that kinda ruled it out |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | I preferred campuses too. Almost put Nottingham as my first choice based on that |
jefflebowski
08.16.13 | went there for an open day, almost made it my insurance 'cause it's p nice
what course are you going in for btw? |
InfamousGrouse
08.16.13 | whats wrong with jack wills goddam |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | Geography. Academically wise, Bristol is the best of the unis I got into to do that.
Kinda regret not doing Physics at A level. I love astronomy. I have Maths so maybe I'll be able to use my extra credits to do that or Marine Biology, if I can squeeze out of being made to spend them on French. |
jefflebowski
08.16.13 | 'whats wrong with jack wills'
everything. literally, everything. |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | First thing I saw when I googled was "fabulously British" so yeah
Posh accents are kinda hot though |
jefflebowski
08.16.13 | initially sure, but once you get used to them the allure soon fades
and their laughs...oh god the laughs... |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | Forget the laughs ignore the laughs just focus on the endearing innocence and the money |
BigPleb
08.16.13 | Don't you mess with us Brits muthaphucka. |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | They're gonna have fun working out my accent |
apert
08.16.13 | Fish are you English? |
jefflebowski
08.16.13 | i'm sure my fairly thick mid wales accent will win me many friends and admirers in exeter |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | I'm English but a bastardised and mongrolised Englishnan |
jefflebowski
08.16.13 | so an englishman, in other words? |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | I like to think I'm less English than I am, unfortunately.
I don't act very English though |
apert
08.16.13 | Most private school people are fine, and unless you're a chav you shouldn't have any problems. Some are obviously arrogant and annoying but not as many as most people would have you believe, most people at my school were posh but still nice guys |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | Yah I've been more annoyed by people complaining about "rahs" (wtf does that even mean) and going on about trying to avoid them than actual posh people |
BigPleb
08.16.13 | I'm the only trve Brit in here. |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | Lolerpool |
jefflebowski
08.16.13 | yeah, it's a small minority but unfortunately a disproportionately vocal one |
BigPleb
08.16.13 | I'm actually from Warrington, a place you've never heard.
I've lived in Liverpool for the past 7 years, trvth. |

08.16.13 | you a liverpool fc supporter? |

08.16.13 | Leb do you go to uni? |
BigPleb
08.16.13 | Yup indeedy do.
@apert yeah, dropped out after a month cost was shite. |
apert
08.16.13 | I support Liverpool, despite being from Kent |
BigPleb
08.16.13 | Good lad! |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | Lol always makes me laugh the amount of southerners who support Liverpool
Most are women |
jefflebowski
08.16.13 | this is basically a liverpool fan thread now
fuckin' hyped for tomorrow i predict a thrilling 1-0 defeat to stoke |
BigPleb
08.16.13 | We will win, gotta have faith!
I'm going the game I'm off now haha, early kick-off 12.45! |
apert
08.16.13 | Question is if Suarez will stay or go? |
Zeneren
08.16.13 | off to ICL, outrageous amount of us seem to be going to London for uni, liverpool will prob improve this year 6th place |
apert
08.16.13 | Shit dude I'm already there, what are you studying and what halls |
jefflebowski
08.16.13 | suarez will stay, seems like he resigned himself to one more season.
also did you mean UCL? 'cause if so that's an awesome uni, well done dude |
Zeneren
08.16.13 | I'll be studying biochem, few of my best mates are doing medicine so you'll probably see them. We get our
accommodation offer at the start of september so that's something to begrudgingly wait for. UCL is University College
London and I'm off to Imperial but yeah they're both pretty great |
InfamousGrouse
08.16.13 | fish lol you had to actually google jack wills? what the hell clothes do you wear?! |
apert
08.16.13 | Sweet, I know some guys doing biochem they all really like the course. I was in the southside halls this year, really nice but super expensive
ICL is imperial college London btw |
anarchistfish
08.16.13 | Plain t shirts and jeans. Honestly, my dress sense is so boring.
Rebranding myself for uni though. Deleting my old fb page and starting a new one and everything.
Oh and here's me leaving London whilst loads flock to it. Have fun there, for a while I didn't realise how great a city it was. You can just walk around and you'll bump into something interesting. It's an immense city but there's something homely about it. |
Zeneren
08.16.13 | Ah that's great. Really hoping for a place in princes gardens or beit halls. Must be pretty hard finding a place for the next years though |
Surtur
08.16.13 | Still got another year to go until uni, looking at Stirling up in Scotland. |
jefflebowski
08.16.13 | oh shit yeah, that's a bit of a faux pas, my apologies, though that's probably even more impressive |
Zeneren
08.16.13 | Deleting facebook might be a good idea actually, oh and cheers jeff |
hikingmetalpunk
08.16.13 | good basketball program |
apert
08.16.13 | Not that hard actually, there are just so many places in London, though you won't get to live in South Ken past the first year cause its just too damn expensive. Got a house in Hammersmith for next year. Beit and princes gardens are probably the nicest halls overall, really close to campus |
InfamousGrouse
08.16.13 | "Still got another year to go until uni, looking at Stirling up in Scotland."
lolwat look me up if you decide to go there |
Surtur
08.16.13 | Haha I will! Is it any good? |
InfamousGrouse
08.16.13 | well i could type for a while about its advantages and disadvantages, what are you aiming to major in? |
Surtur
08.16.13 | I'm looking at doing philosophy |
InfamousGrouse
08.16.13 | heavy, heavy stuff. one of my flatmates' degrees rolls politics, philosophy and economics into one package. i remember all too well him outlining his arguments into whether or not computers could "think" or if the sky really was blue.
i can only speak in favour of the uni in terms of non-academic experience: while the on-campus accommodation is a little outdated and overpriced, they are in the process of refurbishment or in the cases of some of the most slummier halls, complete demolition. the campus itself is wonderful, i'd recommend an open day if travelling isn't an issue so you get a feel for the place.
one thing i truly love about living/going there is that it's a small place, and i think students make up something stupid like 25-30% of stirling's population. there's only two clubs (always jam-packed but cheap) but what's great is because of the lack of alternatives you bump into like everybody you know which is sweet if you go off for a wander or a piss or whatever
i went in initially to study languages but i wasn't exactly impressed with their teaching methods so i decided to swap- fast-forward a year and while i think teaching is to a sufficient standard i'd imagine there'd be better places out there with similar entry requirements, i've probably had about 50:50 ratio of good to bad tutors. perhaps that just boils down to personal preference though.. |
Adabelle
08.16.13 | Off to Leeds, got my first-choice accommodation confirmed today, rules |
mankycaaant
08.16.13 | Glasgow. Move across there on the 13th of September, anyone else there? |
Surtur
08.16.13 | Ah, PPE, that was what I originally wanted to do until I realised that I was awful at politics and
nothing special when it comes to economics haha.
I have a lot of family near there so travelling should be fine for me, and from what I've seen before
it looks like such a nice place. It's definitely my first choice so far from what I've read, and it
offers exactly what I want by the sounds of it, so hopefully I'll be able to go to an open day soon.
Cheers for all of the info! |
Ecksavie
08.16.13 | I'm about to finish my MSc at the University of Edinburgh. Have fun at undergrad, suckers.
No seriously, best of luck, you will need it. |
Ecksavie
08.16.13 | Also, PPE is great, just expect to do it with the biggest cunts going. Especially if you go to Oxford. |
ApplicationToHeaven
08.16.13 | wasn't expecting to even get my insurance but managed to get abb, going to ucl to do anthropology |

08.17.13 | Nice bro, great subject and great uni. Make sure you read Clifford Geertz; he is your new God. |

08.17.13 | I don't know why people choose to do languages at university. You can teach yourself a language more efficiently in your own time. |
thumbcrusher
08.17.13 | yeah i learnt more french from 10 hours worth of CDs than i did from 5 years of it at school. |

08.17.13 | Morning lads. |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Hey hey |
ButteryBiscuitBass
08.17.13 | Never went to uni, but heard good things about birmingham and nottingham from my mates that went. |
thumbcrusher
08.17.13 | yeah birmingham's pretty fun. though they're knocking down a great pub just off campus cause the uni wants a new swimming pool, it hurts |
ButteryBiscuitBass
08.17.13 | Sending you cuddles to help you withyour pain brother |
thumbcrusher
08.17.13 | thanks man, it's a very difficult time for all of us. |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Nottingham looked sweet when I went. |
ButteryBiscuitBass
08.17.13 | It's a great place. I've been for gigs and to stay with my mate obviously. There was a sweet metal pub which i can't remember the name of. |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Unfortunately I couldn't put it as my insurance cos it had the same grade requirements as Bristol. |
Adabelle
08.17.13 | Both my firm and insurance gave me the same offer haha.
Didn't make it but got accepted by both, how about that |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | nice, a mate of mine got a*bc and somehow got accepted on a 3 a's offer |
Zeneren
08.17.13 | A friend of mine got ABBB and got accepted on a 3a offer for medicine. pretty crazy knowing how competitive it is. |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | i guess the fee rises have reduced the number of applications a bit |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Yeah, I would've given up hope with that.
My friend had an AAA offer from Oxford, got AAB, and didn't get in.
|
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | that's tough, but i guess if you're not getting 3 A's you'd probably struggle at oxbridge anyway given that the vast majority of people going there have 2+ a*s |
thumbcrusher
08.17.13 | Fish, i knew someone like that last year hoping to go to oxford as well, but they got it remarked and it luckily went up and they got in. jammy bugger |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | I was actually really surprised he didn't get it. He's super intelligent and obviously impressed them in the interview, but the way the exams work means they don't always reflect that. I had that in AS Economics. Knew all the theory inside out and understood all the lessons but I struggled with the exam technique and ended up only getting a B. |
Adabelle
08.17.13 | A mate got AAAA and Cambridge wouldn't let him in because his offer was *AA, so gutted for him |
Adabelle
08.17.13 | I'd have killed for 4 As! |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | yeah, exam technique is a bitch, some of the question marking is retarded at a level |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | I got 4 As, lol. Actually I was disappointed I didn't get any A*s. I was predicted A*A*AA |
apert
08.17.13 | A levels don't matter once you get to uni forget about them, i got 4As but that's because i was a lazy fuck, i should have got A*s, but it doesn't matter if you get in |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Yeah, I'm not complaining too much, but getting the star would've been nice |
Ecksavie
08.17.13 | Hindsight, bro. Don't dwell on that shit, it's the beginning of the end. Steam on! |
Ecksavie
08.17.13 | Also, A levels do kind of matter since a lot of employers ask for a minimum of 300-360 UCAS points, depending on how
'elite' they think they are. But that shouldn't be a problem for you lads. |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | stars are pretty much decided by how much the exam suits you though, you can know everything and make a few careless errors and still not get one |
apert
08.17.13 | yeah they would be nice, some subjects seem to have way more people getting A*s though. when i did a levels, 3 people got Bio A*s and 25 got English A*s and there was about the same people doing each a level. |
hikingmetalpunk
08.17.13 | couldnt blv they lost to robert morris in the nit |
Ecksavie
08.17.13 | I mean, I don't really know how the grading works, but it could be explained that English is more subjective, whilst Biology is more objective. So it's easier for them to nail your ass on one mistake in Biology than it is in English, since mistakes in English are of an entirely different (subjective) nature. I don't know, just a theory. |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | We never bothered with ucas points. Have no idea what 300-360 represents. |
Ecksavie
08.17.13 | Neither, since I'm not natively British. Have a look here: http://www.ucas.com/how-it-all-works/explore-your-options/entry-requirements/tariff-tables |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Well I needed 84% in my English exam to get the * and I thought I did pretty well. Actually I think subjective subjects are harder - the marking's erratic. At least with maths you either get it right or you don't.
Also I hate how you can get a better overall mark than someone who gets an A* but you only get an A. |
apert
08.17.13 | i dunno English always had an unusual amount of A*s at a level at my school, to the extent that people wouldn't get A* at GCSE but would at a level. its weird. The biology mark schemes were ridiculous, i found that at a level it was more about knowing the mark schemes that the content cause they always wanted specific words for each question and if you didn't write them you wouldn't get the marks |
Ecksavie
08.17.13 | @Fish: You have serval A's, so I wouldn't worry about it ;) |
Ecksavie
08.17.13 | Apert, it's like that at uni too. Play the system and win. ;) |
apert
08.17.13 | yeah fish that happened to me at maths, got something like 93% overall and beat a load of people who got A* but my worst marks were in the A2 modules so i didn't get the * |
apert
08.17.13 | luckily we had loads of multiple choice questions this year so there was no mark scheme BS |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | i needed 83% in the last maths module to get the a* and scraped over by 1 mark, so lucky |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | " people wouldn't get A* at GCSE but would at a level."
Haha, English literature was my only B at GCSE. After my year they actually introduced a rule at my school where you can't take something at A Level if you get less than an A in it at GCSE. Total crap. |
apert
08.17.13 | Yeah I got a C in Eng Lit the first time. The rest of my GCSEs were *s and 1a so I retook it and got an A* second time. always thought that lit was dodgy at GCSE really sporadic marks. my school has a similar rule but its more they discourage you to take the a level rather than stopping you |
slagun
08.17.13 | most likely moving to London next month, not sure how im gonna manage with the ridiculously high prices there.. |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Yah I didn't bother applying to any London uni |

08.17.13 | Sell your soul

08.17.13 | not sure what I was thinking when I applied to be quite honest |

08.17.13 | I bought a jäger bomb for £9.90 in London |
Zeneren
08.17.13 | but why |
InfamousGrouse
08.17.13 | he was thirsty |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Guy I was talking about who didn't get into Oxford for AAA actually got AABB. Even harsher in that context |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | that's the danger of doing 4 A levels i guess |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Almost everyone in my school does 4 A levels |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | really? damn, i always thought it was normal to drop one after AS, definitely glad i did |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | It is. Most do 5 AS levels. Most people do double maths and my school allows people to do it as one subject even though it counts as two A levels. I actually did French as an extra A Level instead (which is cheating a bit). Wouldn't have been able to do double maths. Single maths was tough enough. |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Most people at other schools do just do 4 at AS and 3 at A2 though |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | fair enough, but what's the point of doing 4 a levels when nearly all uni offers are for 3? seems counter intuitive at least a little bit...
agreed on the difficulty of maths, luckily my dad's a maths teacher so i had a comparatively smooth ride |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Gives you a better chance of getting accepted in the first place, and a bit of a pillow in case you mess one A level up. Most people could handle the extra workload, although there were some who dropped from 5 ASs to 3 A2s. |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | i guess it makes more sense that way, i'd say it depends on the choice of a-levels as well to a certain extent - me doing maths f maths and physics meant there was a massive overlap with everything and so i could focus like a motherfucker without having to worry about another completely different subject on top |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Also a hell of a lot of people from my school go on to do science related subjects at university and double maths is very helpful if not essential in some cases. |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | yeah apparently a large amount of the first year maths is basically a level further maths which sounds cool |
thumbcrusher
08.17.13 | i did further maths at A level and i wanted to kill myself |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | it's a bitch, fp2/3 is objectively the worst thing ever |
thumbcrusher
08.17.13 | I found M3 even worse. We were like "why don't we do D1?" but our teacher thought M3 would be "more entertaining"... |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | thank god we only did up to m2. d1 is piss easy but the most boring single module i've ever done |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Apparently D1 is horrible.
I found S1 so hard but then I got 97% in the exam and it ended up being the module that dragged my grade up. No idea how that happened. |
thumbcrusher
08.17.13 | i think i got about 46 in m3 which was 46 more than i thought i'd get, i was pretty chuffed lol |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Everyone I knew said D1 was really hard and tedious. |
Adabelle
08.17.13 | I did single Maths and chose S1 and M1 so I got to do two AS modules...
Meant that could get an A overall even with an E in C4 hahah |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | we must've had a good teacher i guess, i found that i did really well on the applied stuff like s1-3 and d1 but struggled a lot on the pure maths |
Adabelle
08.17.13 | EASY ROUTE ALWAYS |
jefflebowski
08.17.13 | i managed to get a * in further maths despite getting 29% on fp2, it's ridiculous |
thumbcrusher
08.17.13 | best thing about doing further maths though was it made me realise i hated it and should not do it at uni, which was a good thing to know before i spent £30k on something i did not like at all. |
anarchistfish
08.17.13 | Pure maths I definitely found the easiest, although I usually wouldn't completely get it til they gave us these neat little revision booklets which somehow managed to make all the theory seem much shorter and simpler than the text books we'd been using all year did. Tbh they should've just given them to us to begin with. |
Zeneren
08.18.13 | start of this year I thought, the * in maths would be the easiest. How wrong I was lol. Settled for the A. The workload of history probably stopped me getting a*s in biology chemistry and maths |
jefflebowski
08.18.13 | steering as far away from essay subjects as i could basically decided my a levels for me to be honest |
apert
08.18.13 | I got 100 in C2, highlight of my a level maths. I actually did a level maths over 3 years cause I did GCSE early and was too lazy to do the extra as in further maths that I was meant to do. Still didn't get an A* which us pretty embarrassing tbh |
jefflebowski
08.18.13 | a* in maths is actually really hard though 'cause it only depends on two modules, if anything getting one in f maths is a bit easier |
keyokeyo
08.18.13 | Jack Wills is considered fresh/trendy in America lollll. To me it's just the stepping stone between Abercrombie and J. Crew |
apert
08.18.13 | Well that's the thing I got above 90 in all the modules except the ones that mattered for A* |
jefflebowski
08.18.13 | such a stupid system, i don't know why they can't do an average for at least all the a-level ones |
anarchistfish
08.18.13 | Agreed
Maths was the only A level I thought I had pretty much no chance of getting a * in. It's so tricky. |
JS19
08.18.13 | 'I'm actually from Warrington'

08.18.13 | Going to Salford this year. They were asking for AAB, but I kind of flunked this year and ended up with CCD, but they emailed me saying they'd changed my offer to an unconditional, so I have no idea what happened there. |

08.22.13 | When do you hear back from accommodation? Still haven't heard from Nottingham yet. |
jefflebowski
08.22.13 | heard back from exeter yesterday, it'll probably be next few days or so |
anarchistfish
08.22.13 | I've gone with university hall, which is really cheap but subsequently kinda shitty. dunno if it's
worth it. don't have a clear idea of what it's like inside. and it's only 5 people a floor so if
you don't like them you're fucked. my justification was that i wasn't gonna spend much time there
what with all my spare money but i might try to get a transfer to badock which sounds much more up
my street |
thumbcrusher
08.22.13 | as birmingham was my insurance i didn't hear back about accommodation last year until like 5 days before i was supposed to go, some places take a while, so keep nagging them and you should learn your fate eventually. |
