anarchistfish 08.16.13	Geography. Academically wise, Bristol is the best of the unis I got into to do that. Kinda regret not doing Physics at A level. I love astronomy. I have Maths so maybe I'll be able to use my extra credits to do that or Marine Biology, if I can squeeze out of being made to spend them on French.

apert 08.16.13	Most private school people are fine, and unless you're a chav you shouldn't have any problems. Some are obviously arrogant and annoying but not as many as most people would have you believe, most people at my school were posh but still nice guys

We get our accommodation offer at the start of september so that's something to begrudgingly wait for. UCL is University College London and I'm off to Imperial but yeah they're both pretty great

Oh and here's me leaving London whilst loads flock to it. Have fun there, for a while I didn't realise how great a city it was. You can just walk around and you'll bump into something interesting. It's an immense city but there's something homely about it.

Got a house in Hammersmith for next year. Beit and princes gardens are probably the nicest halls overall, really close to campus

InfamousGrouse 08.16.13	heavy, heavy stuff. one of my flatmates' degrees rolls politics, philosophy and economics into one package. i remember all too well him outlining his arguments into whether or not computers could "think" or if the sky really was blue. i can only speak in favour of the uni in terms of non-academic experience: while the on-campus accommodation is a little outdated and overpriced, they are in the process of refurbishment or in the cases of some of the most slummier halls, complete demolition. the campus itself is wonderful, i'd recommend an open day if travelling isn't an issue so you get a feel for the place. one thing i truly love about living/going there is that it's a small place, and i think students make up something stupid like 25-30% of stirling's population. there's only two clubs (always jam-packed but cheap) but what's great is because of the lack of alternatives you bump into like everybody you know which is sweet if you go off for a wander or a piss or whatever i went in initially to study languages but i wasn't exactly impressed with their teaching methods so i decided to swap- fast-forward a year and while i think teaching is to a sufficient standard i'd imagine there'd be better places out there with similar entry requirements, i've probably had about 50:50 ratio of good to bad tutors. perhaps that just boils down to personal preference though..

Surtur 08.16.13	Ah, PPE, that was what I originally wanted to do until I realised that I was awful at politics and nothing special when it comes to economics haha. I have a lot of family near there so travelling should be fine for me, and from what I've seen before it looks like such a nice place. It's definitely my first choice so far from what I've read, and it offers exactly what I want by the sounds of it, so hopefully I'll be able to go to an open day soon. Cheers for all of the info!

anarchistfish 08.17.13	I was actually really surprised he didn't get it. He's super intelligent and obviously impressed them in the interview, but the way the exams work means they don't always reflect that. I had that in AS Economics. Knew all the theory inside out and understood all the lessons but I struggled with the exam technique and ended up only getting a B.

Ecksavie 08.17.13	Also, A levels do kind of matter since a lot of employers ask for a minimum of 300-360 UCAS points, depending on how 'elite' they think they are. But that shouldn't be a problem for you lads.
jefflebowski 08.17.13	stars are pretty much decided by how much the exam suits you though, you can know everything and make a few careless errors and still not get one
apert 08.17.13	yeah they would be nice, some subjects seem to have way more people getting As though. when i did a levels, 3 people got Bio As and 25 got English A*s and there was about the same people doing each a level.

Ecksavie 08.17.13	I mean, I don't really know how the grading works, but it could be explained that English is more subjective, whilst Biology is more objective. So it's easier for them to nail your ass on one mistake in Biology than it is in English, since mistakes in English are of an entirely different (subjective) nature. I don't know, just a theory.

anarchistfish 08.17.13	Well I needed 84% in my English exam to get the * and I thought I did pretty well. Actually I think subjective subjects are harder - the marking's erratic. At least with maths you either get it right or you don't. Also I hate how you can get a better overall mark than someone who gets an A* but you only get an A.
apert 08.17.13	i dunno English always had an unusual amount of As at a level at my school, to the extent that people wouldn't get A at GCSE but would at a level. its weird. The biology mark schemes were ridiculous, i found that at a level it was more about knowing the mark schemes that the content cause they always wanted specific words for each question and if you didn't write them you wouldn't get the marks

The rest of my GCSEs were s and 1a so I retook it and got an A second time. always thought that lit was dodgy at GCSE really sporadic marks. my school has a similar rule but its more they discourage you to take the a level rather than stopping you

I actually did French as an extra A Level instead (which is cheating a bit). Wouldn't have been able to do double maths. Single maths was tough enough.

jefflebowski 08.17.13	fair enough, but what's the point of doing 4 a levels when nearly all uni offers are for 3? seems counter intuitive at least a little bit... agreed on the difficulty of maths, luckily my dad's a maths teacher so i had a comparatively smooth ride
anarchistfish 08.17.13	Gives you a better chance of getting accepted in the first place, and a bit of a pillow in case you mess one A level up. Most people could handle the extra workload, although there were some who dropped from 5 ASs to 3 A2s.
jefflebowski 08.17.13	i guess it makes more sense that way, i'd say it depends on the choice of a-levels as well to a certain extent - me doing maths f maths and physics meant there was a massive overlap with everything and so i could focus like a motherfucker without having to worry about another completely different subject on top

anarchistfish 08.17.13	Pure maths I definitely found the easiest, although I usually wouldn't completely get it til they gave us these neat little revision booklets which somehow managed to make all the theory seem much shorter and simpler than the text books we'd been using all year did. Tbh they should've just given them to us to begin with.

anarchistfish 08.22.13	I've gone with university hall, which is really cheap but subsequently kinda shitty. dunno if it's worth it. don't have a clear idea of what it's like inside. and it's only 5 people a floor so if you don't like them you're fucked. my justification was that i wasn't gonna spend much time there what with all my spare money but i might try to get a transfer to badock which sounds much more up my street
