Talk Talk?
Slint?
Sigur Ros? |
geasoftime
08.14.13 | He said he was avoiding the usual suspects. That being said, only 5 would be in my top twenty. |
reportingbird
08.14.13 | mono? |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | I don't like Hammock and Sigur Ros much. :( And yeah, if I put in "The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place" from EITS and "Laughing Stock" from Talk Talk this would be just another list. I take your criticism for Slint though. |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | And Mono. Fuck you, this was hard ok! |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | ... And I can justify these as usual suspects. :D |
SeaAnemone
08.14.13 | do make say think?
|
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | That's a new one to me, will check it out. Any particular album you can suggest? |
thumbcrusher
08.14.13 | maybeshewill are awesome, that's probably my fav of their's too |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | That was a hard choice, but that album has some serious pearls. I really like their To the Skies EP too. |
Keyblade
08.14.13 | Cloudkicker tho for real? Yndi Halda and Mono would be better picks. |
SeaAnemone
08.14.13 | their more conventional one is You, You're a History In Rust
here's some more essential stuff of the genre, much much better than GIAA, Mono, Cloudkicker...
Rachel's - The Sea and the Bells
Dirty Three - Horse Stories
Hammock - Raising Your Voice... Trying To Stop An Echo
Set Fire to Flames - Sings Reign Rebuilder
Storm and Stress - Storm and Stress
World's End Girlfriend - Hurtbreak Wonderland
Spokes - People Like People Like You |
treeqt.
08.14.13 | HEY WHY DON'T YOU HAVE ALL THE ALBUMS THAT I WOULD PUT ON MY LIST ON YOUR LIST MAN YOU ARE A LITERAL SUBOPTIMAL USER GET OUT OF MY SIGHT |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | Cloudkicker is seriously under appreciated, even though most of his stuff is more post-metal. Got to take some risks eh. |
geasoftime
08.14.13 | Check out
Lights Out Asia - Eyes Like Brontide
Fridge - Happiness
Dirty Three - Ocean Songs
Kauan - Aava Tuulen Maa |
geasoftime
08.14.13 | Good call on that World's End Girlfriend album. It's a 5/5 |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | I'm biased for GIAA since that's where it all began for me. I also figured that people who were kind of new to post-rock would dig that pretty easily. |
Keyblade
08.14.13 | Good call on Kauan geas. Can't wait for their new album. |
treeqt.
08.14.13 | Mono / Worlds End Girlfriend - Palmless Prayer / Mass Murder Refrain
Magnog - More Weather
Lil B - Based Jam |
SeaAnemone
08.14.13 | I mean, no (@ilovetree), this list just indicates that, chances are, the guy who made the list hasn't heard a whole lot of post-rock or hasn't heard very good post-rock so it's not like we're commenting just to shit on him, more to let him know that there's much better stuff than GIAA (ugh) |
treeqt.
08.14.13 | ya the comments should be more along the lines of "hey man you should totes check these ..." rather than "YOUR LIST NEEDS x Y z" though |
treeqt.
08.14.13 | and im not all too serious anyway, all is good, watching grimes trying to DJ http://boilerroom.tv/live/ |

08.14.13 | this has also reminded me to listen to mono again, going to do that now |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | Loving the suggestions guys, keep it coming (although I know some of the stuff and didn't include it purposely... tastes
and all that). Checking out a whole of stuff now.
And @SeaAnemone, I like to think I have heard quite a lot, but that's all relative I suppose, especially considering post-
rock is such a vast genre with quite a lot of variation. Definitely don't think you're commenting shit though, I appreciate
your suggestions a lot. Can't help but dig GIAA though. ;) |
MO
08.14.13 | yea you're missing some of the essentials but nice, more love for 2 is needed |
SitarHero
08.14.13 | I feel like Oceansize should be on here. |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | Frames? ;) |
SitarHero
08.14.13 | Any of their albums actually. |

SitarHero
08.14.13 | I've been trippin on Everyone into Position and Frames (to a lesser extent) quite a bit lately. |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | I purposely avoided things with "explicit vocals" (I'm using the terms loosely here). Hence why some of the essentials are missing. But yeah, Russian Circles... |
geasoftime
08.14.13 | I can't understand how people consider Oceansize post-rock... I don't hear it.
You seem like you're open for as many recs as possible, so here goes nothing:
Jizue - Novel
eF - Give Me Beauty or Give Me Death
The American Dollar - A Memory Stream
Jaga Jazzist - What We Must
Collapse Under the Empire - Shoulders & Giants
Leech - If We Get There One Day, Would You Please Open the Gates?
Sleep Dealer - The Way Home
Slow Six - Tomorrow Becomes You
Caspian - The Four Trees
Escape the Day - Ghostless
The Evaptoria Report - Maar
Jakob - Solace
|
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | I wanted to include Jaga Jazzist, Collapse Under the Empire and Jacob, but 5 is a pretty small number. Some of the others
are new to me too. Great list, Geas, thanks.
And you're right, the post-rock label is being used quite freely. Either way, Oceansize is seriously good, who cares for
labels right? ;) |
UnnamedOcean
08.14.13 | Oceansize has songs like Women Who Love Men... and Music for a Nurse, which are totally post-rock. They have similar guitar work and take influence from a lot of post-rock bands, so I would consider them to be on the fringe of post-rock. |
EaglesBecomeVultures
08.14.13 | you know sputnik's fucked when nobody EVER MENTIONS YNDI HALDA |
geasoftime
08.14.13 | Key mentioned them |

Calc
08.14.13 | you put 5 very popular post-rock acts, say you're avoiding the usual suspects, and name your list post-rock all stars. |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | Touché |
Gard3n
08.14.13 | Talk Talk destroys this list any day. |
Evreaia
08.14.13 | No Jakob? |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | @Calc: in my defense though, due to sputnik's elitism the usual suspects usually aren't the usual suspects in your
conventional sense, making these the not-so-usual suspects. ;) |
SeaAnemone
08.14.13 | Yndi Halda has really grown off me over the years
kinda similar to Mono in that what they do they do really well, but what they do is still pretty trite and cliche and kinda bores me
and here Ecksavie check this out:
http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=313022&listid=101808 |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | A Bunny's Caravan. SeaAnemone, I love you. Also, great list. Some new names on there still, will check them out after I've
covered all the others. |

08.14.13 | 'Yndi Halda has really grown off me over the years

What a load of absolute balls.
Also, this list is boring boring boring. And cloudkicker is just plain wrong |
SeaAnemone
08.14.13 | I was the one that added ABC to the database / introduced them to Sputnik ; ) |
Keyblade
08.14.13 | Agreed Sea to an extent. They're good for jamming maybe like once or twice a year. Those rare jams are sweet tho |
SeaAnemone
08.14.13 | "Agreed Sea to an extent. They're good for jamming maybe like once or twice a year. Those rare jams are sweet tho"
agreed
"What a load of absolute balls."
well I mean you 5d a bunch of Sigur Ros albums which I would like 2.5 and a *shels album which I have as a 1 so I mean we have a little different taste in post-rock... |
VisionsFromTheDarkSide
08.14.13 | you know sputnik's fucked when nobody EVER MENTIONS YNDI HALDA [2] |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | @Sea: haha, I knew your name looked familiar! What an album though, I think the Sputnik community will be forever grateful (or at least should be).
@JS19: I'd love to see you do what he does. Whatever you may think, the man can make music.
|
JS19
08.14.13 | Well if you actually looked at the *shels thread I explained my rating there. And the same with Valtari. Plus Agaetis Byrjun has been 5'd by a shedload of people but fair enough.
And I doubt we have a different taste. I'm into pretty much all post rock - what d'you like? |
JS19
08.14.13 | '@JS19: I'd love to see you do what he does. Whatever you may think, the man can make music.'
Whoa dude I never said I was better than cloukicker at making music where'd you get that. I meant his one post rock effort was pretty weak and the rest is a different genre. He definitely isn't a 'post rock all star' |
SeaAnemone
08.14.13 | "And I doubt we have a different taste. I'm into pretty much all post rock - what d'you like?"
http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=313022&listid=101808
it's a little dated as it's over a year old but much of it I'd consider the same |
Scoot
08.14.13 | yeah a bunny's caravan are sweet, been jamming that album a lot lately
sleepmakeswaves are underappreciated as well |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | @JS19: Fair enough, and I will agree, it's not the "best" post-rock release, but I have that album jamming quite frequently.
It may not be as complex and deep as some of the things named here, but I can't help but feel it listens really well. I don't
know, maybe that's just me.
@Sea: You know that list needs Mogwai's My Father My King. ;) |
Keyblade
08.14.13 | I can jam sleepmakeswaves any day. Same with Jakob. |
JS19
08.14.13 | @Ecksavie - oh dw I really like some of his heavier albums. I just don't think one post rock album makes hima giant of the genre even if he is quite popular generally
@SeaAnenome - I actually have every one of those albums apart from Storm and Stress the only one I don't dig is Spokes. Excellent taste man |
SeaAnemone
08.14.13 | I don't really like older Mogwai
and JS19 check out Storm and Stress - it's really essential 90s stuff, spazzy and jazzy, it's my favorite "free-form" type post-rock |
JS19
08.14.13 | The only Mogwai I love is Hardcore... - older stuff hardly does anything for me
And cheers man, usually jazzy stuff is the stuff I'm least likely to dig but I'll check it anyway thanks |
Ecksavie
08.14.13 | @JS10: All good. Yeah, Beacons is a beast of an album. Fade is pretty good too, it feels like Let Yourself Be Huge meets Beacons. But yes, Cloudkicker isn't a giant in there genre, but I have a lot of respect for him, so I'm terribly biased.
Guys, seriously, do me a favour and listen to My Father My King; it's just one 20 minute track. I promise you, you will not regret it. ;) |
EaglesBecomeVultures
08.14.13 | what we should really all be doing is listening to that new native record
on the real |

08.15.13 | ^ no |
Ignimbrite
08.15.13 | GY!BE
Yndi Halda
Leech
Jakob
Sigur Rós
sleepmakeswaves
these are the true essential post-rock bands |
JS19
08.15.13 | How about everyone stops pretending that the 'post rock all stars' are just the ones they like? |
YakNips
08.15.13 | You put Cloudkicker, I love you. |
Ecksavie
08.15.13 | @YakNips: :D
@JS19: Very observant there mate. ;) Still, some good stuff in here.
This list (and especially its comment) is a pretty good place to start for any post-rock enthousiast; I am a happy man. |
