08.08.13 Ranked: The Mars Volta

Ranked: The Mars Volta

The Mars Volta is my favorite band, and I have followed them since childhood. My philosophy, rgenerally, is: the weirder, the better.
1The Mars Volta
Frances the Mute

The Mars Volta are, without doubt, a polarizing band, and their sophomore release, "Frances the
Mute," is, arguably, their most polarizing album. This is not only my favorite album of theirs, but
favorite album in general. It is argued that the album is a bloated noise collage. I never felt that
way. I listen to it and take away things that I have not noticed in previous listens, time and time
again. It is fun, challenging, and resonates within me, with great esteem, in ways that I do not
take from their other albums.
2The Mars Volta
Amputechture

This album received mixed acclaim. From a musical standpoint, I believe this is their best album. I do
have a few issues, which prevented me from getting into it as much as its predecessor. I did not
enjoy the way vocals were layered here. I also believe that this album contains the weakest
opening and close of their discography. The other, six, tracks were terrific however.
3The Mars Volta
De-Loused in the Comatorium

This is their most popular and critically acclaimed release. I got into them not too long after its
release in 03. I enjoy it slightly less than "Amputechture," but only due to the fact that "De-
Loused's..." stylings do not cater to me as much as "Amp" does. In its own right I believe that it is a
masterpiece.
4The Mars Volta
Tremulant

I feel like I should have included this with "De-Loused" for conceptual reasons. I think of it as
a unique body however. It retains more of "At The Drive-In's" stylings than "De-Loused,"
which gave it a different sound.
5The Mars Volta
The Bedlam in Goliath

Well...I don't have much to say about this one. It goes hard...that's about it. I do enjoy the
drumming and musicianship. It is a solid album, but its not my favorite in any regard.
6The Mars Volta
Noctourniquet

I can still remember the hype surrounding this release. Many people, including myself, were
expecting this to sound a bit more like its live interpretations. It an alright album. I thought it
was awkward in some places. Deantoni Parks is a living drum machine, but some songs appear
offbeat. This album felt like it was not cohesive, like it was not at all a band effort. The mixing
was also...laughable. Cedric lays down some great vocals, but they are at war with everything
else going on at times.
7The Mars Volta
Octahedron

This is not a bad album by any means...it just feels like its missing something. I get that they wanted to follow their
creative instincts, but Octahedron did not resonate in me like the others. I feel that it has weaker material. I do not think
that the songs are bad though. I think it would have made a really nice acoustic album.
