Dolving999: Do Any Of You Actually Still Plays Video Games?

SCREAMorphine 07.04.13	I grew up with games during the 5th generation and I fucking loved em. I stuck with them right up until the end of the 6th generation then lost interest. Only the last 2 years I've gotten back into them after pretty much missing this entire generation. I'm like you, I love reading about games and all the tech involved but I have no desire to commit myself to a game. The only games I really made a point of playing this generation are the open world games like Fallout 3 & NV, Skyrim, Dragon's Dogma, Sleeping Dogs, GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption and Just Cause 2.

About to pick up The Last of us, which seems, like Infinite, to be the perfect game for me. Short-ish and emotionally impactful. i definitely do not play games just to 'pass the time' anymore
CameoLover 07.04.13	I've always been one to play games, but it has never taken up too much time in my life. It's probably because I've never really had the money to buy tons of games. I do read and watch a lot about gaming and everything though, I just don't actually play the games, haha. Btw, this is all console, I haven't even begun to delve into computer gaming.

Btw, here in Portugal, one can't simply buy from local stores: in average, a game bought here will set you back something like 60€ (that's around 80 bucks), while if you order from an online store like amazon.uk it will be almost half of that.

Pennywise_M 07.04.13	I know that feeling Dolving. That also happened to me, at this point if i'm to engage in playing any game is one that i will give my full gaming focus to. Like an open world rpg/zombie survival, a horror game or something between those lines. I used to try lots of games, but when i got a job my interest dissipated. These days it's not something i'd like to give time to, as it doesn't make me feel i'm using my time wisely or productively. I'm still drawn to spend some time playing a determined game for once in awhile, but only when i'm working part time or on vacation i actually end up going for it, if even then! That said, i also much rather work on/listen to music and hang out with friends than actually playing said video games. Still, video games rule m/

Puzzles 07.04.13	Games were good to me in the time that I had to play them, but I'm long since over them. I think, if anything, I've retained a warm nostalgic feeling when reminiscing over many a videogame (mostly PS2 and some Xbox), but other than that, I don't feel I really gained anything from hours and hours with them. I think that sort of excessive consumption doesn't really do you any favours, so I'm glad I lost interest. With that said, I still have plenty of great memories with insane videogames, but I'm not dismayed to admit that it belongs to a distant past

But when DayZ comes out that will change. Also been pretty up to date with the development of Project Zomboid, and already gave it a few dozen hours like 2 months ago. Pennywise_M 07.04.13	@Puzzles, Yeah man i really believe that games also lose their magic when we grow up. For instance, my favorite game ever made is Final Fantasy IX. I played it for the first time when i was 11 years old, and played it three times to the end. It's a magical game, even listening to the soundtrack today gives me deep chills, even brings tears to my eyes. The nostalgia is overbearing, reckless. Would i sit through it again? No. Even if i was out of a job, i don't think i'd be able to give that game time. It lies there, deep inside my memories, in that warm place. The soundtrack will still make my eyes wet, i'll still recall that summer when the game took control of my life and was my only allied, i'll still relate it to the happier, better times. It symbolizes that time, when everything was better and those characters were made my second, and most present family. But now i'm an adult and there's no place for that kind of experience. It's a shame, but life's a shame in the end. So many good things left behind.
grish 07.04.13	I'm pretty sure getting a trophy/achievement for beating each difficulty isn't a thing in Fallout 3. You're probably thinking of reaching certain levels with different states of karma, which isn't too difficult to do on only one play through. Anyway, who cares if video games aren't 'useful'. If you enjoy them, play them. If not, don't.

MO 07.04.13	lately I've been trying to do more productive stuff with my time I totally grew up a gamer, played all through high school and uni. but with the effort I put into gaming then I could've put tenfold into doing the best I could've done at school. I still play games here and there but I'm slowly playing less and less these days, using my free time to take extra courses or read/learn more practical shit I'm realizing is a much better use of my time...if only I'd have disciplined myself like this back then, sigh.
Puzzles 07.04.13	@Moreira I can't quite look back on an experience that poignant, but yeah I had some great times with the old Spyro and Crash Bandicoot on PS1 and then Jak and Daxter on PS2, God of War, Burnout, Black, the GTA series. Fuck, too many to name! They were all great in their own right and I look back in awe of how encapsulated and enraptured I was with them. Nothing quite captures my attention like that nowadays, but there's still a lot of magic in life, like, weed and hallucinogenics and sludge metal

Gaining responsibilities and taking everything more seriously is not a good thing at all times. I wish i could just sit through a whole day of Morrowind without thinking "man am i wasting my time or what" ya know. And that's what happens in life in general. Letting go becomes an art to master by some point. So let's not go delving into the concept of "Life" now. This isn't the thread for it. Hahaha
Pennywise_M 07.04.13	Haha i feel ya puzzles. I happen to find magic in other things nowadays. It used to be about scoring for my soccer team, playing video games, play hide n seek, making role plays with my friends, watching cartoons and even series. Now it's about having some true friends i can do some stuff with, anything and everything connected to music, love, knowledge, life experience overall. That's "my magic" now. Damn i used to want to keep up with everything.. I've convinced myself now, if i want to keep doing what i want, i need to choose what i want wisely. There's no time and patience for everything. lol

Very few after that actually interest me (I'm actually surprised that the Wii U actually had me excited enough that I might get one in the near future.) My favourite games, however, lie decidedly in the past: the old (good) Football Managers, FIFA's and Sonics (and Marios), Bust-A-Move/Puzzle Bobble, etc.

Although I recently enjoyed Shank and Alice by EA Sports. They were at least original and challenging.) Also, using WASD to move seriously irks me, for some reason. I saw that shit being done in the late 80s, and it annoyed me back then, too.

I like playing games, but with a few very rare exceptions, I'm physically unable to play for long durations because I feel like there's something much better I can do with my time, so a lot of games are left unfinished (some even completely untouched). The last game I was totally obsessed with was Dark Souls, and I managed to beat that.
ReturnToRock 07.04.13	I beat an FPS called World War Zero, dunno why, it was compelling. And I recently became obsessed with Football Manager again (it's actually an addiction for me.) But I'm reminded of how much better 'our era' was every time I go to an arcade in a town close to where I live and play Outrun Coast 2 Coast/Outrun 2006. SO.MUCH. FUN! (PS I'm a Mega Drive/Genesis and 32-bit era kid. I also owned an original Game Boy, and desperately wanted a PS1, which I now own.)
SubtleBody 07.04.13	Last game I bought was Dead Space 3 when it was released, and I played it for thirty minutes and haven't touched it since. I used to be massive on gaming but now I can't sit down for more than an hour without getting bored and squirmish. As previously said, the only game I really got into and played for ages recently was Dark Souls, and that was almost two years ago now. Most of my time now is spent reading, writing, painting and making music (as well as that other thing: work)

Whenever you'd let your Digimon poop outside the toilet, he'd digivolve into a fucking Numemon, that green slime thingy xD Yeah i played Soul Blade, which was Soul Calibut for Ps1. Hands down my favorite 2d fighting game ever. Fast and relentless, and hard as fuck to play against the cpu on the higher difficulty levels.

Mister Twister 07.04.13	Yeah, Digimon World had quite a few bugs. That's part of the charm though, little tricks here and there. The game would have been damned near impossible without the Mojyamon Med Disk Exchange trick. One of the more annoying bugs though was that Giromon's jukebox would freeze the game if you tried to scroll through the song list. If I'm not busy or hanging out with my friends (which is like 80% of my week), I play video games. Cool thing is, I can sometimes blend hanging out with friends and games together when we have LAN parties or we're at someone's living room and someone wants to play something, so I bring my 360 and play Worms or Halo. I play a lot of Battlefield 3 on 360 (cause I don't have money to build a desktop right now) and occasionally Reach cause Halo 4 is horrible. I break out the 64 occasionally. Bunch of friends and I play Mario Party and Super Smash Bros

Anyway, loved that game, would always play as Cervantes and kick some ass with my awesome double swords (although when I beat it, it was as Seung Mina, because all the cool characters had been used up.) I prefer Tekken 3 or Soul Calibur 2, though. On Tekken I play as Yoshimitsu, because roundhouse kicks. Nice to see we agree a bit more on videogames than music. Would have expected most people here to be current-gen gamers, not retro gamers!!
Pennywise_M 07.05.13	Ah 3D, lol i had the concepts mixed, but yeah you're right. My fav character was Li Long, and let me tell i used to kick ass with him. But that game really always drew me into playing with every character, its campaign mode made us do that and it was so awesome. Best fighting game i ever played, honestly. Also, Budokai 3, Mortal Kombat Deception, Tekken 5 and man, that Tenkaichi series.

Must be because we're Portuguese, and we still had arcades everywhere in the turn of the millenium (there was a carnival in Lisbon with a bunch of them, plus you could find a lot of seedy ones where you had to be over 16 to go in.) These arcades ALWAYS included one or more of the following: Puzzle Bobble (ALWAYS), KoF 97/98/99, and at least one Sega racing game.

I used to play this game called Windjammers. Then i would play Metal Slug a lot too. And when i was around 10/11 i went for the Megadrive emulators and man, i spent years relishing all those games. I could swear i at least tried every single one of them once xD

Atari 07.05.13	@Captain, the zelda games are all action packed and hard enough for adults without being too violent for kids. :P
omnipanzer 07.05.13	I don't, at all. It's a form of entertainment like movies and TV it's just the new kid on the block by comparison. There are middle-aged people around today that remember a world without video games in it. They're like any other form of entertainment at this point. there are people who don't like them just like there are people that can't understand wasting two hours on a movie or don't like sitting around watching television.
Calc 07.05.13	I will make owning video games for my kids a chore, hopefully I'll break them or at least make sure they weren't as bad as I was. All it did for me was distract me.

DinosaurJones 07.05.13	I'm at work right now, but it's super slow because it's the day after a holiday sandwiched before the weekend in the US. Also, I still game quite a bit. It's mostly because I do it socially with my friends from college who live far away and it helps us stay in touch. I used to be way more into it when I was younger, but it's taken a backseat to my job and my creative endeavors these days. But it's still fun to plop down and lose myself in a game every so often.
Atari 07.05.13	@omni, good point. not to mention there's been such a rise in voice acting in video games (Liam Neesen - fall out 3) (Ellen Page - Beyond Two Souls) (Emma Stone - Sleeping Dogs). In a way a lot of games are just like movies but more interactive

Atari 07.05.13	yeah for sure but i agree that there's definitely a future for gaming in hollywood. Playing the Last of us was quite the experience and some of the cutscenes were basically a movie.
