06.27.13 | how about new age, einaudi's music is more similar to modern pop than "classical music" as we know
it. i'd be ok with neo-classical but that sorta bothers me cuz there's a literal definition for neo-
classical in terms of music theory. (JK It's here!) |

06.27.13 | I thought about Neo-classical.
classical can be enough though, so not that important.
Also, noise and noise rock are absolutely different things. How should we tag merzbow, masonna etc. without noise? |

06.27.13 | how is classical anything like neo-classical (presumably taking neo-classical to mean modern pop music like einaudi, yiruma, hsiashi but extended beyond just piano which is more or less where my knowledge ends)?
in terms of structure, instruments used, themes, technicality, etc. it's vastly different |

it shouldn't be, after years of promoting it I find it real stupid. atmospheric sludge metal is a better tag. |

06.28.13 | @cyg, listen to "river flows in you" and contrast it with liszt's "la campanella" since they're about equal and length and both more or less paint vivid pictures as their names would suggest. technical difficulty notwithstanding, la campanella has varied texture (the main theme, for ex., has alternating measures of staccato and legato for an obvious example). it also has several thematic differences, including what sounds like a minor main melody, major interludes, and a chromatic scale (?) tossed in. also are those 15th intervals?? you can hear dynamics and accelerandos yourself and i don't feel like pointing htem out.
river flows in you just sounds like a pop song. it has a singular tempo, and the only dynamic fluctuations are the natural pulses of a phrase (which don't count as using dynamics for artistic vision).
this isn't to bash on yiruma but to show the two pieces aim for different things. i think you'd find even most basic "classical music" that has been deemed by people more versed than us to be worthy of surviving centuries after their composition have a far grander vision than a lot of "neo-classical" which, for better and worse, is much more poppy.
@balazs, ya you're right but modern classical always seemed like a pointless term to me, comparing phillip glass to like brian crain is kinda dumb |

06.28.13 | Yeah I suggested Krautrock too |

yeah, that makes a lot of sense. but technicality notwithstanding, spring is soooo very much a pop song. |
Cygnatti
06.28.13 | "we don't need to get ridiculous with subgenres but can we please get screamo it feels weird to have football etc. and orchid in the same pie chart slice."
screamo was one of the first genres to really get pushed for. none of the new genres except a very few (for whatever reason) like r&b, shoegaze, melodeath won't show up until a few days from now. |
auberginedreams
06.28.13 | also why does deafheaven show up on the main emo genre page even though they are not tagged as emo? |
Cygnatti
06.28.13 | a single idiot or two voted that they were emo, for the time being, if a band gets one vote in a genre, the site will perceive it as if it were that genre.
so if you got one band, and got enough alts to vote one vote for every available genre, that one band will show up in every genre page, and contribute to every genre to everyone's pie chart.
they said they'll get this fixed but that's how it is right now. the biggest thing we need to do is get the user base to keep on voting. the more votes, the much less likely a band will be mislabeled. |

i don't agree but it doesn't really matter. i think you can find examples of classical works that is more similar to the new age movement (or w/e you wanna call it) than to other classical stuff. i just wanted to differentiate the two in broad generalizations since exceptions for genre tags always exist |
StallionMang
11.02.13 | Been 4 months and still no skramz tag, wtf. |
