06.12.13 | Bonus points for whoever can guess the connection between the albums and the authors listed. Most are east as fuck. Go. |

06.12.13 | Well 14 wrote the Time Machine, so Somewhere in Time. 16 wrote Game of Thrones so yeah. That's all I got. |

06.12.13 | some others
Hemingway - old man and the sea
Kafka - metamorphosis
McCarthy - no country for old men |

06.12.13 | All correct.
But seriously 9 is the easiest fucking one. |

06.12.13 | Hated some of Attwood's work because she's so bloody miserable about half the time in her writing. |
Butkuiss
06.12.13 | Resident Nihilist hates Atwood for being miserable. I see what you did there.
I don't know that there are many writers who AREN'T miserable on this list. Hornby would probably come closest, along with Hosseini, Kerouac, and Wells. |
SmersH
06.12.13 | Good stuff, I would recommend Bret Easton Ellis, if you haven't already.... as well as Jorge Borges for that weird short story fun (he's kind of a mix between McCarthy and Kafka).
I've always found Vonnegut to be terribly overrated, though... gods know i've tried to like him. |
RadicalEd
06.12.13 | Martin and fitzgerald are not that miserable tbh. |
ButteryBiscuitBass
06.12.13 | I've read Kafka's short stories 'The Penal Colony' and 'The Hunger Artist', both were very good, have you read?
I'm hooked on Stephen King at the moment. |
SmersH
06.12.13 | Man, I haven't read SK since Roland climbed the tower.... |
wacknizzle
06.12.13 | Slaughter House 5 is so fucking good. I need to read more Kurt Vonnegut. Can't get enough Chuck P though. |
Butkuiss
06.12.13 | Easton Ellis is on the list; a good friend of mine absolutely loves him. Also I love Borges. Labyrinths is my jam.
@Bass: I've read Penal but not hunger artist. The Trial is my favourite Kafka. I love the bleakness. The dude just gave no fucks. I've never really been into King though. Lovecraft has always been my go-to for horror.
@wack Slaughterhouse 5 is awesome. Have you read Cat's Cradle? It's just as good, if a little less emotive. |
ButteryBiscuitBass
06.12.13 | Have you read 'The Stand' by King? That completely changed my perspective on him. |

06.12.13 | Talking of writers
RIP Iain Banks |
Butkuiss
06.12.13 | Oh fucking shit you're kidding me. I was just thinking about him today.
There's a cafe my girlfriend's friends' acoustic band plays at with a bookcase you can borrow from while you're there and they have a shitton of Banks. I always enjoyed it. |
SmersH
06.12.13 | Awesome - I love finding people who've actually read Borges.... Garden of Forking Paths blew my mind a little. |
ButteryBiscuitBass
06.12.13 | Just gave that a go, SmersH. Will definitely have to read that again, it was a mind fuck. |
ResidentNihilist
06.12.13 | Oh the irony. But yeah, I don't mind darkness and misery but the way she does it in The Blind Assassin is just too much, I found. The entire story is just 'I'm going to die x infinity' broken up with a few moments where she points out the worst things about life and how the world is shit. In terms of structure and writing style, it's written beautifully. The handling of the subject matter is one dimensional and juvenile though. Honestly it would've been better if the protagonist blew her brains out after the first sentence. |
Butkuiss
06.12.13 | Check out Oryx and Crake, or Handmaid's Tale. They're both a bit more upbeat than Blind Assassin, and just as brilliant. They're also a lot more mature. |

06.12.13 | "I would recommend Bret Easton Ellis"
YES! Less Than Zero is his best but American Psycho is more than worth a read |
Synchestra
06.12.13 | List needs more Bukowski.
Also reminded me I haven't read any Kerouac and that makes me sad. |
WeepingBanana
06.12.13 | H.G. Wells - The Time Machine (relating to somewhere in time) |
Rail
06.12.13 | The Time Machine is the one with the Moletariat, right? It's great. |
WeepingBanana
06.12.13 | idk it's been like 6 years since i've read that one. i remember really liking it though and also having really strange dreams about it |
Butkuiss
06.13.13 | Yeah, Time Machine has the underground workers and above ground upper class societal degeneration thing going on. Trippy as fuck. |
