oubli 05.11.13	You can listen to some Jorge Ben Jor albums, especially one called "A tábua da esmeralda" and "Transa" by Caetano Veloso, they're good. They're more on a psychedelic way of Samba mixing rock influences on the go, and both are classics. Tom Zé is also good, he had recorded even a live concert with Tortoise as his stage band. On movies: Lavoura arcaica is great and epic. One my favorite movies is also "linha de passe" by Walter Salles. Books: Any by Machado de Assis is great to start, so as the epic novels and short stories by Guimarães Rosa.

Kind of a bricolage of other music, but is cool because you have a bunch of classic brazilian songs (as Dorival Caymmi) within lots of classic english songs rebuilted (as The Beatles). Its somewhat, much like the way brazillian modernism worked: take outside things and built it in a brazilian way

Dreamflight 05.11.13	Portugal speaking... Books: Try some Eça de Queirós. he's my favourite writter from the realism era. Among his works: The Sin of Father Amaro, The Maias and The City and the Mountains. People also seem to enjoy Saramago's work (I don't), so you may want to check his books as well. As for films for instance if you're into horror stuff you should check Coisa Ruím. I'm sure there's lots of stuff I'm forgetting right now..

oubli 05.11.13	Well, I don't live in the city of São Paulo, but in the state of SP, but I'm two hours from there. Well, it's very variated for sure, there are museums, bars, famous streets as the Augusta, or Paulista Avenue. It's a nice place to go for sure. There are problems, certainly because it's actually very Large. The interior of the state, where I live has a cool vibe, minor streets but with lots of things to see. Maybe a tour through some of these cities would be cool. I also recomend you to go to the south of the state of Minas Gerais, baroque architeture and very cool people, Bahia is awesome too. anarchistfish 05.11.13	It's the US influence. Same with Latin American Spanish. Apparently the Spaniards don't like that. Portuguese pronunciation is closer to French than Brazilian is but I've grown into using Brazilian pronunciation and I prefer it now. It's smoother.

Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges - Clube Da Esquina Antonio Carlos Jobim and Elis Regina - Elis & Tom Nara Leao - Dez Anos Depois tip of the iceberg cos there is some phenomenal shit from the late 60s and early 70s out of that country. but for films and books I can't help you.

Pennywise_M 06.13.13	Hehe, balas e bolinhos. Shit movies even though the third one has some pretty funny moments. Portuguese music? Da Weasel. By far the best Hip Hop/Pop Rock band in Portugal, ever. Some hints of Nu Metal/Hardcore on their early stuff too. I know this list is kinda old now but oh well.

RuanCSC 06.14.13	All the recommendations of Brazilian music above were good, but were mostly classic, old stuff. If you want to check out a new musician, Silva is surely the best. Also try Clarice Falcão. But mainly Silva. Seriously, the guy is just... wow. That is, if you're into electronic/pop music.
