rockandmetaljunkie 04.29.13	These bands were the ones I picked. My friend choosen Jethro Tull and Genesis instead of Rush and Yes.

Hoppoman 04.29.13	My top four would be King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis and Yes. However there are so many bands that defined the 70s rock era that there isn't as much of a definition of a big 4, more like the large 10.

omnipanzer 04.29.13	For me they were infinitely more influential than King Crimson and Yes. They most certainly have more albums I like than any of the groups you mentioned. Just because the aren't a favorite here on the Sput doesn't mean they wouldn't win 4th place in a landslide somewhere else. They have sold more albums and have more platinum certifications than most of the groups mentioned. For me, in my lifetime Moody Blues has been a very large influence and I'm no original so I can't be the only one.

omnipanzer 04.29.13	I'm a Tull lover and you know this however I think they are a tier two group when it comes to how much influence they have over what came after them. They could never go toe to toe with the likes of a Genesis, Rush or Pink Floyd. I personally like them more but they aren't the horse to back imo. ;-)

omnipanzer 04.29.13	Don't get me wrong tier two still puts them miles above 90% of the other groups that were around in their heyday though.

blairosh 04.29.13	1) Pink Floyd (I think a lot of their catalogue is overrated but in terms of biggest and most influential, they have to be number 1). 2) Genesis (only up to and including Wind and Wuthering, but all those albums are amazing). 3) Rush (early albums and 80s albums were patchy but must be considered as pretty influential). 4) King Crimson (not as commercially big as the other three but a lot more of an art-rock influence). Camel - as much as I love them, I think they're firmly in the "second tier" (alongside Tull, Gentle Giant and ELP). Yes - they miss out on a top four spot because they only really have two or three excellent albums.

With my 4 I was basing it almost solely on personal preference. Also I agree with you about Moody Blues being more influential than a lot of the bands mentioned in this thread. Same would go for Procol Harum who are another early prog band that gets overlooked on this site.

omnipanzer 04.29.13	@rockandmetaljunkie hit up their first three albums The Magnificent Moodies, is a decent typical mid sixties rubber soul album. Days of Future Passed, is their most defining work as it was a classical/rock fusion that kind of put everyone on their ass when it came out. In Search of the Lost Chord, this is a great album that really foreshadows the four albums that follow. They become these kind of epic works with overlying story arcs that define each album.

omnipanzer 04.29.13	Question, Children's and Threshold are all pretty equal to me. Outside of Days of Future Passed which I look at as it's own little singularity they are the defining MB albums for me. They were like reading a book, in the sense that they allowed me to put them on lie back and just daydream. I've been listening to them since I was a very small child and still listen to them to this day.

Every Good Boy Deserves Favour is them fucking the shit out of a premise but is still pretty decent. Seventh Sojourn is where they should have changed up the formula but instead decided to just go ahead and shit out that turd.

rockandmetaljunkie 04.29.13	And of course, one of the greatest Prog bands of it's time, hailing from Greece, would be Aphrodite's Child. An incredible band that most of our fellow greeks don't know about.
