rockandmetaljunkie
04.29.13 | These bands were the ones I picked. My friend choosen Jethro Tull and Genesis instead of Rush and Yes. |
rockandmetaljunkie
04.29.13 | Which bands would you guys pick ? |
Hoppoman
04.29.13 | My top four would be King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis and Yes. However there are so many bands that defined the 70s rock era that there isn't as much of a definition of a big 4, more like the large 10. |
ButteryBiscuitBass
04.29.13 | King Crimson
Genesis
Pink Floyd
Gentle Giant |
Pestiferous
04.29.13 | pretty much got my 4 |
demigod!
04.29.13 | Rush
Pink Floyd
King Crimson
Jethro Tull
idk. |
MikeC26
04.29.13 | Floyd, Camel, Genesis and King Crimson |
Chortles
04.29.13 | kc
yes
genesis
camel |
JamieTwort
04.29.13 | Jethro Tull
Pink Floyd
Genesis
King Crimson |
rockandmetaljunkie
04.29.13 | @Hoppoman
Indeed man, during the 70's there were so many great bands that wrote history with their work. I
believe however we can always rate or classify those bands. Hence the dilemma, "which ones" ? |
DoubtGin
04.29.13 | "Jethro Tull
Pink Floyd
Genesis
King Crimson"
yes |
omnipanzer
04.29.13 | Pink Floyd
Genesis
Moody Blues
Rush |
J0ckstrapsFTW
04.29.13 | Rush is must drrrrr |
ButteryBiscuitBass
04.29.13 | Nah, Rush are awesome, but no. |
apert
04.29.13 | Pink Flyod
Genesis
King Crimson
Yes |
omnipanzer
04.29.13 | I'd like to pick ELP too but who would I kick? |
ButteryBiscuitBass
04.29.13 | Moody Blues imo. |
omnipanzer
04.29.13 | Well, Moody Blues has been more influential than half the groups mentioned imo and are one of my
favorites so... no. Edit: ninjedit. |
ButteryBiscuitBass
04.29.13 | Have you been drinking? |
DrMaximus
04.29.13 | King Crimson
Yes
Camel
? |
MO
04.29.13 | genesis definitely needs to be in this |
Chortles
04.29.13 | Close Maximus just throw genesis in there |
omnipanzer
04.29.13 | You might want to do some reading before you double down on your assumption BBB. |
ButteryBiscuitBass
04.29.13 | I just can't see how they're more influential than the likes of Yes, King Crimson, Rush, Genesis, etc. |
ButteryBiscuitBass
04.29.13 | Nice Ninja Edit. |
Killerhit
04.29.13 | Rush
Jethro Tull
Camel
King Crimson |
omnipanzer
04.29.13 | For me they were infinitely more influential than King Crimson and Yes. They most certainly have more albums I like than any of the groups you mentioned. Just because the aren't a favorite here on the Sput doesn't mean they wouldn't win 4th place in a landslide somewhere else. They have sold more albums and have more platinum certifications than most of the groups mentioned.
For me, in my lifetime Moody Blues has been a very large influence and I'm no original so I can't be the only one. |
JamieTwort
04.29.13 | "Pink Floyd
Genesis
Moody Blues
Rush"
Was half expecting to see Tull in your top 4. Good to see some love for Moody Blues though. |
omnipanzer
04.29.13 | I'm a Tull lover and you know this however I think they are a tier two group when it comes to how much influence they have over what came after them. They could never go toe to toe with the likes of a Genesis, Rush or Pink Floyd. I personally like them more but they aren't the horse to back imo. ;-) |
elephantREVOLUTION
04.29.13 | btbam
within the ruins
periphery
born of osiris |
omnipanzer
04.29.13 | Don't get me wrong tier two still puts them miles above 90% of the other groups that were around in their heyday though. |
blairosh
04.29.13 | I love prog debates. |
blairosh
04.29.13 | 1) Pink Floyd (I think a lot of their catalogue is overrated but in terms of biggest and most influential, they have to be number 1).
2) Genesis (only up to and including Wind and Wuthering, but all those albums are amazing).
3) Rush (early albums and 80s albums were patchy but must be considered as pretty influential).
4) King Crimson (not as commercially big as the other three but a lot more of an art-rock influence).
Camel - as much as I love them, I think they're firmly in the "second tier" (alongside Tull, Gentle Giant and ELP).
Yes - they miss out on a top four spot because they only really have two or three excellent albums. |
JamieTwort

Ah, I see. Fair enough. With my 4 I was basing it almost solely on personal preference.
Also I agree with you about Moody Blues being more influential than a lot of the bands mentioned in this thread. Same would go for Procol Harum who are another early prog band that gets overlooked on this site. |
rockandmetaljunkie
04.29.13 | Need to check Moody Blues. Out of all these bands mentioned here it's the only band I haven't checked. |
omnipanzer
04.29.13 | @rockandmetaljunkie hit up their first three albums
The Magnificent Moodies, is a decent typical mid sixties rubber soul album.
Days of Future Passed, is their most defining work as it was a classical/rock fusion that kind of put everyone on their ass when it came out.
In Search of the Lost Chord, this is a great album that really foreshadows the four albums that follow. They become these kind of epic works with overlying story arcs that define each album. |
SIMBOLIC
04.29.13 | Needs tool |
omnipanzer
04.29.13 | ^ found one. |
ButteryBiscuitBass
04.29.13 | hahahaha, nice Omni.
On the Threshold of a dream is my favourite MB. |
omnipanzer
04.29.13 | Question, Children's and Threshold are all pretty equal to me. Outside of Days of Future Passed which I look at as it's own little singularity they are the defining MB albums for me. They were like reading a book, in the sense that they allowed me to put them on lie back and just daydream. I've been listening to them since I was a very small child and still listen to them to this day. |
omnipanzer
04.29.13 | In Search of the Lost Chord was experimentation that led up to those albums and is almost as good.
Every Good Boy Deserves Favour is them fucking the shit out of a premise but is still pretty decent.
Seventh Sojourn is where they should have changed up the formula but instead decided to just go ahead and shit out that turd. |
omnipanzer
04.29.13 | Moody Blues 101 with professor/grampa Omnipanzer. ;-) |
Jethro42
04.29.13 | Genesis
King Crimson
Yes
Jethro Tull
|
JamieTwort
04.29.13 | On the Threshold of a dream is my favourite MB. [2] |
JamieTwort
04.29.13 | If I was to put my personal preferences to one side for a moment and name a big 4 based purely on influence I'd probably go with something like this.
Pink Floyd
Moody Blues
King Crimson
Procol Harum |
mandan
04.29.13 | I'll just post some of my fave 70's prog bands and make it easier on myself:
Rush
Pink Floyd
Genesis
King Crimson
Yes
Jethro Tull
Kansas
ELP
Camel
Gentle Giant
That should give an idea. |
mandan
04.29.13 | "Needs tool"
Lol. |
manosg
04.29.13 | Very interesting subject and great conversation. I would probably go with:
Pink Floyd
Yes
Rush
Jethro Tull |
demigod!
04.29.13 | faux-four:
Tool
Porcupine Tree
Rishloo
The Mars Volta |
manosg
04.29.13 | Another question would be which bands are the obscure big 4? |
rockandmetaljunkie
04.29.13 | ^when it comes to the 70's prog bands ? |
BigPleb
04.29.13 | Jethro Tull have some shit, sorry. |
manosg
04.29.13 | Exactly. For example Strawbs and Renaissance have released some awesome albums but they don't seem to get so much love. |
Atari
04.29.13 | i've been digging tull, gentle giant, black widow, horslips, fuzzy duck |
Atari
04.29.13 | oh yeah and strawbs |
rockandmetaljunkie
04.29.13 | @manosg
That's a tough question to answer as almost every band has a strong fan base. I would probably choose
bands such as Gong, Gentle Giant, Renaissance and Marillion. |
rockandmetaljunkie
04.29.13 | And of course, one of the greatest Prog bands of it's time, hailing from Greece, would be Aphrodite's Child. An incredible band that most of our fellow greeks don't know about. |
eloimayano
04.29.13 | Genesis
Pink Floyd
Yes
Gentle Giant
With ELP, King Crimson, Rush and Camel as an alternative big 4.
|
rockandmetaljunkie
04.29.13 | Eloy, also, deserves to be mentioned. |
manosg
04.29.13 | Aphrodite's Child don't stand a chance against the mighty Olympians! just joking of course. |
JamieTwort
04.29.13 | "Jethro Tull have some shit, sorry."
Yeah but so do most prog bands mentioned in this thread, at least in their later years. |
ButteryBiscuitBass
04.29.13 | Chamillionaire
Kanye West
P Diddy
Lil Wayne |
YankeeDudel

04.29.13 | @omnipanzer

04.29.13 | Pink Floyd and Genesis.
The rest can dispute the other 2 |

04.29.13 | King Crimson

04.29.13 | Ela re!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome back vre kavlomeme roka!!! |
Friday13th
04.29.13 | Yes, King Crimson, Rush, and Jethro tull. It hurts deep leaving out Pink Floyd, Camel, Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc. It's not like thrash where the next contestant to the big four is Testament...come to think of it, they could easily consolidate it to the big three by booting Anthrax. |
NeroCorleone80
04.29.13 | Camel,
Yes,
Rush,
Pink Floyd |

04.29.13 | Pink Floyd is the ultimate prog rock band is the best one ever and the rest are just following them |
