04.28.13 | 4'33 inspired me to learn my current instrument
guess which one
btw thx for teh recs, will check out what i haven't heard
@kubrick hah i used to listen to brian crain all the time b/c my 6th grade teacher played his CD all the time. his version of canon is still one of my favorite piano based versions actually. surprisingly i've never given his stuff a serious chance, i assumed his stuff wasn't high quality for w/e reason
@havey yay now that's some REAL piano best song evar it inspired me to learn piano :DDDDDD (but seriously it was like one of the first things i self-taught myself, it was a preset on my old keyboard from 2004 LOL) |
Havey
04.28.13 | really though, Satie.
and i trust you've already learned everything by hisaishi |
Kubrick
04.28.13 | haha yeah brian crain is basically a pop artist in the piano realm. his music is almost entirely driven by melody and geared towards instant gratification. he does venture off into different time signatures here and there but for the most part the music is very simple and entirely focused on tune. that being said, he has a knack for writing consistently catchy, very pretty melodies. it's not chopin by a longshot but it's definitely pleasing to the ears :D |
toxin.
04.28.13 | i ♥ hisaishi but actually besides the OST's of a few Ghibli movies i've never checked his music out. and is satie really melodic? i thought he was avant but cool i'll give him a try.
@kubrick, ah awesome. i don't mind pop piano (can i make this a thing) but then i've also outgrown yiruma-esque music (where you take a pretty melody and repeat it ad infinitum) so i'm not sure how i'd feel about brian crain. i tend to prefer to have my piano music build towards a climax and release thru tempo and dynamics but these also tend to not be so melodic. i was hoping for both, i have a feeling crain's is only melodic but i think it's worth a shot. does he have any specific collection? |
RinaKettysamour
04.28.13 | Satie's really melodic and easy |
toxin.
04.28.13 | awesome, btw when i said easy to play i didn't literally mean i'm going to learn how to play it (i don't even have a keyboard with me UGH i'm gonna cry), i just meant complexity isn't an issue. i couldn't play liszt at 10 bpm :-( |
Havey
04.28.13 | certainly you must've heard the melody to gymnopédie 1? |
Kubrick
04.28.13 | then for brian crian i'd say your best bet is piano opus.. that album is his most adventurous. he uses different time signatures for a lot of the songs and they all have different moods.. some being pretty and others being more ambiguous. also canon is on that one :D
based on your elaboration you might also dig isaac shepard. check this song - absolutely gorgeous and slowly builds into a really cathartic climax.

04.28.13 | certainly you must've heard the melody to gymnopédie 1?

04.28.13 | @Havey, listening to gymnopedie 1 right now... yes I certainly have listened to it, but this is my first time in years + i never knew the name/composer
@kubrick that was a very pretty song, thanks! |
Kubrick
04.28.13 | yeah if you dig that check out the album by him for sure.. really good stuff in the same vein as that
|

04.28.13 | awesome thanks again! @chris, i'll check it out.
i really wasn't expecting this amount of recs, you guys all rule |
Kubrick
04.28.13 | anytime ^_^ |
toxin.
04.28.13 | by the way is brian crain's 2009 album really the first place he recorded his version of canon? if that's the case it couldn't have been his version because i heard it in 2006 lol |
Kubrick
04.28.13 | haha it must not be. i don't have all of his albums so it might be on an earlier one too? not sure. the one on piano opus is nice though for sure |
Kubrick
04.28.13 | if you're looking to sample some of the stuff on that album i'd say try out snow and ice. ice in particular is a pretty cool song.. starts off seeming like its going to be a pretty sombre song but then transitions into a really gorgeous uptempo part that is probably one of the best things on the album. |
Kubrick
04.28.13 | water is also a good one.. more straightforward but very memorable melodies |
toxin.
04.28.13 | haha his music is the kind I need no starting point since it's all pretty accessible. I'll let ya know what I think about it though |
