04.23.13 | Not going to talk about Jane Doe or anything by Opeth or Tool, since I haven't listened to any of these bands in-depth. Also, artwork for 3 and 5 was there a minute ago, but disappeared after an edit :S |

People need to stop with the 'DSotM' is overrated bullshit. Most who say that haven't even listened. |
ReturnToRock
04.23.13 | @Havey doesn't mean I don't call BS on them. BiB has nothing beyond the Big 4 (five, if you're being generous). Highway kicks its ass in so many ways, it's not even funny. |
Cipieron
04.23.13 | although i find 2 to be a classic, i agree with the rest.
i actually can't stand GnR |
ReturnToRock
04.23.13 | @Leb I listened to the first track, enjoyed it, the second was just an interlude, so I thought 'fair enough', but then the third one had THE SAME SYNTH LINE still going from Track 1! That was when I gave up. |
BigPleb
04.23.13 | Well you are just impatient. |
YoYoMancuso
04.23.13 | 4 and 5 are the balls |

04.23.13 | Guns n Roses were/are terrible.
Fuck Axl Rose. |
YoYoMancuso
04.23.13 | I will agree that Painkiller does not deserve a 4.5, Stained Class is far and away their album that deserves a rating that high |
ButteryBiscuitBass
04.23.13 | lol Snox, I need to stop reading everything you write in an Australian accent. |
demigod!
04.23.13 | 5 is a bit overrated but only in that the albums that preceded and succeeded it are much better yet most floyd fans do not acknowledge this |
ReturnToRock
04.23.13 | @demi I dig all of them (apart from 5 and, to a lesser extent, 1), but they're not the instant 5's that music critics make them out to be. In fact, most of them are under a 4 for me (Appetite might be a 4.5, but that's the closest one). |

cagedescending
04.23.13 | No on both accounts, although Screaming certainly comes closer
Sad Wings and Stained Class tower above all three though |

04.23.13 | "starting to hate this word ''overrated''"
It's a shitty retarded word so yeah you should |

The word overrated is stupid because it insinuates everyone who thinks the band is classic is wrong about their opinions and that you're obviously right because YOU personally don't like it as much. It's stupid as fuck. It's like someone saying, "Oh man, I fucking LOVE steak, it's my favourite food", then having you say, "LOL steak? You fucking moron that's overrated as fuck, meatloaf is way better"
I used the Meatloaf example because I know you live for shitty dad rock. |

YoYoMancuso

Anyway if you're gonna make a list like this you need:
Rush - 2112
King Crimson - In the Court
Radiohead - OK Computer |
YoYoMancuso
04.23.13 | Born To Run is a timeless record |
ReturnToRock
04.23.13 | And yet I don't like Meat Loaf the artist. Also, which part of I LIKE THESE BANDS BUT PREFER DIFFERENT ALBUMS BY THEM did you not understand?
OK, let's look at this subjectively, using AC/DC as an example.
Highway To Hell's filler songs: Love Hungry Man, Beating Around The Bush, Get It Hot
Back In Black filler tracks: What Do You Do For Money Honey, Let Me Put My Love Into You, Shake A Leg, Given The Dog A Bone and if you want to be honest, Have A Drink On Me and Rock'n'Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, although mileage may vary (I like Drink).
That's three fillers in 12 tracks versus six fillers in ten tracks. Which one is the classic again? |
CaptainHadouken
04.23.13 | 2 and 3 can agree with |
ButteryBiscuitBass
04.23.13 | Giving the Dog a Bone is outrageously good!!!!!! |

Yeah this
also, the fact that everything is admired for some reason, but the thing is you don't fucking know why someone likes something, so you can't say is overrated for some reason because most people could like it for some other reason or another

Screaming for Vengeance>British Steel> Painkiller
I always thought British Steel was the most beloved Priest album.
Also, you are right for staying away from Opeth or Tool. If you can't sit though an entire classic Pink Floyd album before complaining you hate it and starting a flame war, you'll be shot if you start telling people you hate Tool after only listening to the first three songs of Lateralus. |

3. Stained Class/Hell Bent For Leather
4. Angel of Ret./Painkiller (tie)
5. Rocka Rolla
6. Sad Wings
7. Jugulator
8. Turbo
Those are the ones I've listened to.
@tommy AC/DC have SIMILAR songs, not songs with the EXACT SAME riff.
@Visceral I actually own 10.000 Days and will listen to it at some point. I also don't dislike Opeth's early/DM stuff, I just don't see what all the worship is about. Good band, not pinnacle of music.
Same for Reign In Blood (which metalheads say is the Holy Grail of music) and Dark Side (which music critics say is the pinnacle of music). Reign In Blood iI find paper-thin and painfully one-dimensional, and you all know about me and Dark Side by now. Apparently it's my problem not everyone else's, but there you go. |

04.24.13 | Steel and SFV are tied, to be honest. Steel has Breaking The Law, Living After Midnight, Metal Gods, United and to an extent Rapid Fire. 04.24.13 | British Steel isn't anywhere near their best. SWOD for me, and then Painkiller. British Steel is a hell of a lot more overrated than Painkiller. |
ReturnToRock
04.24.13 | Again, let's take the test:
Painkiller filler/forgettable tracks: Leather Rebel, Metal Meltdown, Between The Hammer & The Anvil, Battle Hymn, One Shot At Glory
British Steel filler/forgettable tracks: You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise, The Rage, Steeler.
I know British Steel has less songs, but still. |
ReturnToRock
04.24.13 | I'd forgotten how many good songs Painkiller has, though. |
cagedescending
04.24.13 | Sad Wings barely above Jugulator
stahp |
ReturnToRock
04.24.13 | Nah, like I said, that list only contains the albums I've listened to, not all of them. Jugulator's pretty weak aside from Cathedral Spires. |
ReturnToRock
04.24.13 | My fav's off Painkiller would be Painkiller, All Guns Blazing, Night Crawler & A Touch Of Evil. |
Surtur
04.24.13 | The best songs on Painkiller are much better than the best on British Steel, plus the supposed filler tracks aren't filler, but that's just my opinion. |

04.24.13 | "Y'know what? When I get home I'm gonna go download Dark Side and listen to it to see if I change my mind. And I promise I'll listen to all of it this time, at least once."
wait we're arguing this is no time to be reasonable!!!!1 |
ZilbelPing
04.24.13 | AC/DC is the epitome of generic rock |
ReturnToRock
04.24.13 | Nah, I've been meaning to do it anyway, just couldn't be bothered to. I'd rather not destroy my reputation any more than I already have :D
If I still don't see anything special about the album (as happened with Reign In Blood), I'll probably just keep quiet about it. |
cagedescending
04.24.13 | Leather Rebel
forgettable
are you actually high |
ReturnToRock
04.24.13 | @ZibelPing, bet you can't think of a band FROM THEIR TIME PERIOD that sounded exactly like them. |
ZilbelPing
04.24.13 | Sorry, I don't want to spend my time looking for bands with the same drum groove in every song and power chord riffs. |
ReturnToRock
04.24.13 | They've got good hooks and one of the best rock guitarists in history (my personal favourite, but without bias, at least Top 20 or Top 50). |
ZilbelPing
04.24.13 | rock guitarists aren't anything special anyways so your argument is stupid |
ReturnToRock
04.24.13 | @Zibel. Cop out, point for me.
Also, Whole Lotta Rosie, Highway To Hell, Go Down, You Shook Me All Night Long. How are those tempos and drum lines in any way similar? |
ReturnToRock
04.24.13 | LOL you mean Jimi Hendrix is nothing special? Or Chuck Berry? |
ZilbelPing
04.24.13 | You've got to be deaf to think that the ac/dc drummer can change it up from his basic rock groove. All he does is change tempos. |
evilford
04.24.13 | Ford, could you imagine having not heard that Money bassline?
dooooo do do do do do do doooooooo doooooo do do do do do do dooooooooo
hah no I can't

yeah shitty bands.

The Doors - shitty band
The Beatles - shitty band

YankeeDudel
04.25.13 | RtR you have such painfully generic dad rock taste that I had when I was 13 that I cringe so hard seeing you actually try to sound like you know anything other than vh1 classic. The only album I really care about here is 5 (the others are solid to good but they're no floyd) and you only listened to the first 3 songs. You should prob not make anymore lists, leave the site, go to rollingstone.com, and feel at home. Either that or actually, and I know this may scare you, expand your taste for fuck sake. |
YankeeDudel
04.25.13 | I mean you ACTUALLY said this when somebody asked you what non dad rock you listen to:
"Try these on for size anyway: GY!BE, Mr Bungle, Chumbawamba (yes, they have more than one song and I've known that for longer than some of you have been alive), Jesus & Mary Chain, Fantomas, Prodigy, Bob Dylan, The Who, NIN, Mano Negra, Manu Chao, Emir Kusturica & The NSO, Grip Inc., Oysterhead, King Crimson, loads of old blues, a bit of jazz, and a large etc. It's not stuff I listen to every day, but I do enjoy them. I just can't say "this song sounds like this group" or whatever, which is why I don't review them"
As if this gives you cred or some shit?? Holy dicks. Wow you listen to Bob Dylan and NIN YOU MUST BE SOME KIND OF WIZARD |
ReturnToRock
04.25.13 | "Expand your taste" on Sputnik = "listen to albums that will put you to sleep, because when music is fun it is no longer reputable", apparently. I just listed a bunch of bands that the average AC/DC and Green Day fan never even heard of, but nope, not enough. Let's just take the two better-known artists he said and give him shit for it and ignore all the others he mentioned.
Sputnik -_- |
Ire
04.25.13 | damn this is so boring there is like cleverness and substance 2/5 why does sputnik overrate it
|
YankeeDudel
04.25.13 | are you seriously serious right now? you think bob dylan, nin, prodigy, jesus and mary chain, THE WHO, king crimson, godspeed, mr bungle, grip inc, manu chao, and CHUMBAWUMBA are obscure or something? are you this dense and sheltered?
oh my god |
YankeeDudel
04.25.13 | i honestly feel bad right now. youve been on this site for almost 10 years, wrote 300 reviews, and yet still think those bands are underground or show you have a diverse taste? what have you been doing here all this time? it most definitely wasnt to find new music. |
ReturnToRock
04.25.13 | When I reviewed Chumbawamba, 60% of the comments were "w00t these guys have albums?"
Also, I'd qualify at least Mr. Bungle & Jesus as bands no one I know in real life will have heard of. At least those two. I could mention Tomahawk, Fantomas, Bauhaus, Nomeansno, Rachel's, Do Make Say Think, and others, but those are more my Mum's bands. And besides there's no point.
@Jacqui I don't like 98% of the DM I hear. Rings are interesting because of all the doodling, and they have melody, which is key for me (same reason I loathe black metal, grindcore, noise/drone and chord-a-minute post-rock). |
Keyblade
04.25.13 | he didn't say it was obscure (which is relative anyway), but obscure enough that the average green day or ac/dc fan (which is what you're saying he is) doesn't know about. so in effect, his tastes are expanded beyond the credit you give him. whether his tastes are actually diverse or not (which again, is always relative) is another matter. so cut the guy some slack bro |
Keyblade
04.25.13 | wait i take back what i said. did you just say black metal has no melody? |
ReturnToRock
04.25.13 | I tried going into indie, actually. I looked up a couple of bands people on here jizz over. Not one hook got stuck in my head. Not one chord stood out, or a vocal line, or a melody. Nothing. They literally were interchangeable: same slightly-off-key, whinemotional singers, same plinkity-plonkity piano, same acoustic strumming, same string samples, same EVERYTHING.
So it's not that I didn't try, it's just that I didn't like what I heard. So why go on trying to pretend I do, y'know? |
ReturnToRock
04.25.13 | @Keyblade trve cvlt black metal doesn't. Some black metal does. |
Keyblade
04.25.13 | even trve cvlt bm does. trem riffz are like the ultimate melodies |
YankeeDudel
04.25.13 | ha no key. hes been on a music site for 10 years. youd think by now hed be a little further along. point is he listed a bunch of hugely popular bands to show hes not so generic and I laughed. this is just hilarious but hey. |
Keyblade
04.25.13 | btw listen to Summoning |
ReturnToRock
04.25.13 | I mean the 'hey guys we're down here at the bottom of the well and we're fucking evil' type of BM. Least favourite genre alongside grind.
True story: when I had my band, we would muck about in the studio with what we called 'the Sunn 0))) song". I'd play an open E and hoooooold it, the guitarist would pluck an open E and hooooold it, and the drummer would do a 2-second fill/break every minute or so. And the truth is, I've LISTENED to Sunn 0))), and we weren't too far off their actual sound. |
YankeeDudel
04.25.13 | RtR again there are other genres than indie rock, even though you prob listened to some shitty sput bands. Why dont you try some of my recent lists? There are hundreds of amazing genres out there and thousands or amazing albums. Again its like you dont know anything after being on this site for this long. I just cant fathom how little youve actually progressed. |
Keyblade
04.25.13 | seriously dude, even those |
YankeeDudel
04.25.13 | listen to dissection, vinterland, and sacramentum. ya know theres actually a genre called melodic black metal which again after 10 years makes me laugh you didnt know. the atmospheric stuff has alot of melody too. so alas you really have no idea what you're talking about do ya? |
conesmoke
04.25.13 | " I've LISTENED to Sunn 0))), and we weren't too far off their actual sound"
................... that quote is dumb as fuck, you're wrong, and you can't state a bands sound like that, even if it is Sunn 0.
How the fuck can you justify saying that Dark side of the moon is overrated when you listened to 1/3 of the album? One
day something you've said is shit will sink in and you'll realise just how much you've been missing out on.
Until then, UP YOURS. |

one more question rtr. what is the last great band youve discovered? no generic rock ish and please dont say the talking heads or some other band you should have heard 10 year ago. pretty sure the average person doesnt listen to the talking heads but that doesnt mean they, along with the other bands you listed, arent all immensely popular with actual music fans. ya know the people who count and not 14 year old nancy jane down the street. |

I was talking about trve kvlt badly produced black metal.
Latest bands I became a fan of:
1. Billy Talent (via Sputnik) - pop punk
2. Enforcer - traditional metal
3. The Daemons - indie-folk I actually like!
4. The Real Danger - pop-punk
5. Imelda May - blues/rockabilly
6. Rings Of Saturn - death/grind
7. The Monks - Odd proto-punk
These are in no particular order. As requested I'm leaving out the couple of hard rock ones I discovered.
Also, I once heard this Sunn 0))) record that was literally just this guy yelling from inside a coffin (!!) and static. How is that fucking music?! |
YankeeDudel
04.25.13 | Another one. What metalheads actually think Reign in Blood is the "holy grail of music"? Ha again its like you're only talking about stupid vh1 That Metal Show metalheads. I have never heard anybody say that here so who are you actually talking about and where are you getting this crap from?
Alright ive had enough have fun on your musical journey to nowhere xox |

04.25.13 | Case in point: my housemate knows a bunch of artists I've never heard of, but she doesn't know Green Day. Why? Because it's not a genre she usually likes, so she doesn't feel the need to go after it knowing she probably won't like it much.
You know...what real life people do. |
YankeeDudel
04.25.13 | Why are you still reading music magazines lol? And talking to metal fans "in real life" is not a very good gauge. 99% of metal fans I know all think Metallica is the best band and many I know who think they are into punk say Dookie is the best punk album. Also many acdc fans think BIB or HTH are the best rock albums. So what? |
apert
04.25.13 | 4.5, RiB rules, not best thrash though or pinnacle of metal |

04.25.13 | So nobody cares about overrated albums for the general joe blow. Saying Appetite for Destruction is overrated on here is about as controversial as saying you're an atheist. |

04.25.13 | "knowing she probably won't like it much"
^that is a closed minded approach to listening to music. Secondly, screw what 'normal' people listen to. Soooooooooooo many great and wonderful artists were labelled 'abnormal' before they were embraced.
You're too safe with your music listening. Don't be. Songs may feel awkward or unsettling at first, but they WILL sink in and you won't regret it. It's like planting a seed. |
