religious scientists already have a conclusion, that they try to prove using evidence. most likely completely ignoring all evidence of the contrary. its extreme confirmation bias. basically not the scientific method.

Just don't be a shithead while you're here, there is an obvious presence among us, because we are a part of this universe even if our lives are just a physical manifestation of it. There is no heaven yet for any of us yet as far as i know(meaning peaceful non-physical existence), live your lives, feel free, don't confine yourselves toward any one belief, be open, loving, and free as much as you can. It's likely gonna be different for each individual, just don't fuck up and be an asshole in life. In all likelyhood the mechanics of the universe are gonna treat you the way you left and I'd like to leave in a better position than that I left, it's all up to you. Just gonna end this with saying that I don't believe there is a god but I do believe the universe is alive because it fucking is, and the mechanics of it's design are gonna be the one to take care of things after death and that is the only real fear to be worried about. It sounds like it takes alot of lives and time to forfill to be free of those duties. When I see a more primative creature say an ant, a spider, or deer it seems alot less painful to kill when you feel those souls just wanna escape those bodies and move on to a better. It would be funny though if it were that way and that's how it was with humans too. I mean it is hard to imagine having once been a deer or spider or any animal but imagine we were, I mean we all die and we don't know death in life. Then there is the story of Abraham I think who kills his own children when ordered by God, or how they mutilate kids genitals at birth because it is "holy". There is also Jesus saying that he comes armed with a sword against evil... any way it all just seems so contradictory that I don't even feel like its worth my time reading it. It all just seems like a reason for people to get excited about death and that is horrible to me. |

actually, you can prove what makes teeth fall out. what i'm saying is that atheism is belief that there is no god, which is an illogical belief unless you can prove that there is no god. the fact that atheists cite scientific evidence and religious people often do not has nothing to do with the lack of certainty that is inherent in both ideologies.
in the face of uncertainty, there is only uncertainty. i don't believe in god, but i don't deny the possibility that i could be wrong, because i don't know for sure. neither do you. your atheism is not logical. |

I believe in the possibility that if there was an afterlife, it can can be a different experience for everyone. Much like how no two people are the same, no two souls are the same and each will follow its own path. If you truly believe you were meant to turn into a chicken after you die, you will regardless of if that existence is "real" or the entire kingdom was built to cater to your customized path. If you believe absolutely nothing happens, then you could be missing out on something amazing. This may sound farfetched but at least Im not thinking like a cynical douche anymore. |

I was raised as a christian, did the whole ceremony thing and shit, but in no way do I believe in Jesus, or for that matter, the whole "saints" thing. No human can be the embodiment/representative of god. I think those were all just christian tales of bravery and good morals to gather a following.
That said, I do believe in God. Well, I call him "God", but I visualize he/she/it/whatever as a superior formless entity. I mean, after all... someone must have created this whole mess we call "world" to begin with. |

04.10.13 | Hilary I'll write a few thoughts for thought:
1. I'm only posting this so you can move on with life. First, Faith and Religion are fused together through organized religion. Don't discredit faith through organized religion or visa versa.
2. People want religion/ belief systems/ faith/etc. for their own personal reasons. Answer: Do you fear death/ the unknown/ loss of loved ones/ responsibility/ Loss of liberty or equality/ Judgement (Both metaphysically and socially)... All the faith based thoughts provide answers in some capacity to these questions.
3. Don't be demanding of answers. People can be located at an an angry, confused, longing, or happy stage in their life, so faith will be different at each phase. Let whatever thoughts come to you on their own. Even not thinking about religion is quite healthy at times.
4. (Now this is a personal belief of mine) I find the absence of God quite unlikely. This is certainly not an endorsement of any organized religion, but people forget how finite their life and knowledge truly are. There is a vast ecosystem of stars, planets, and life forms that we have not even thought about. The whole universe operates quite outside of our will to power. This notion of an "empty space" may be troubling for some and beautiful for others. Ask yourself: Do you see beauty and awe to the cosmos? Does it frighten you or fascinate you that there is a exponentially chaotic world outside of our small realm? To me there is a fierce beauty to the world that organized religions calculate, predict, box in... I selected the quote up top because cynicism and fatalism is part of many religions fears. "Death has lost its sting." This is why up top I told you to open up to the wonder of reality. Sure there is pain, loss of innocence, death, loneliness, uncertainty, responsibility, but would you have it any other way? |

Exactly, one of the biggest arguments for atheism is the reaction what caused the big bang, but who/what set that in motion? They'll never know.

04.10.13 | If there is a god I would imagine it's a being beyond our comprehension by a fairly long way. A monkey would have more chance of understanding the intricacies of global telecommunications than we have of understanding something that can dash off all the things that make up a universe. You talk about death as if it's something inherently bad. Without death - even the death of entire species - life wouldn't be sustainable. Without suffering, a crucial part of the impetus for a species to evolve would have been missing. Hoping that there isn't a god is a type of arrogance - it assumes that god is something like a human, with morality (whether twisted or not), emotions and a responsibility to hold everyone's hand and make sure everything is just lovely forever. Since it hasn't done that, if it exists it must be some sadomasochistic monster? Nah. That isn't atheism - that's just a particularly bitter form of "god made us in his image." The human brain is crude, and so is our language. It's interesting to throw ideas around, but if there is a creator we're never going to get close with our current tools. We can't even completely understand certain aspects of life on earth yet. Personally, I think the human mind has developed into something that we can plausibly, if figuratively, call a soul. I'll believe in god if and when I meet it. |

04.10.13 | I'm gonna break out some philosophy on y'all bitches. The following is an excerpt from an essay I wrote a few weeks ago on this very subject. The entire thing is ~10 pages, so bear in mind that there's a lot more to the argument than what I'm presenting here.
"...combining all of these aspects of Descartes’ arguments for the existence of God, we can say that God must exist simply due to His perfection, for first of all, our notion of perfection could not exist if an ultimate perfection were not a reality, and second of all, the very idea of God’s perfection excludes the possibility of his nonexistence."
"...Aquinas gives an example involving a burning log. This log, he says, was initially set ablaze because of the fire itself, and not because of the wood itself. He states, “What is changing can’t be the very thing that is causing the same change… but must be being changed by something else”. This summarizes the essence of the first part of this argument: change cannot have been caused by the thing that is changing, but must have come from an outside source. Furthering this mode of thought, he goes on to argue that, if the above statement is taken to be true, every effect is but a piece of a long train of causes and effects, and that this train must have had a first cause. He asserts that this must be true because “eliminating a cause eliminates its effects, and unless there’s a first cause there won’t be a last or an intermediate cause”, and also that a series of causes cannot possibly be infinite: that is, if we look back far enough, there must be a first agent cause. Aquinas takes this concept to be God, or specifically, that “to which everyone gives the name God”."

04.10.13 | I go on to present several counterarguments from Kant and Hume, including the Problem of Evil... blah blah blah and then the conclusion:
"Gathering all these arguments together, we can come to a few conclusions about the existence and nature of God. The first is that, although at this point we are unsure of its actual nature, a First Cause – as defined by Aquinas - must exist and its existence is disproved neither by Kant nor Hume. Secondly, a Source of Perfection – as defined by Descartes – must exist and neither Kant nor Hume disproves its existence. It becomes trickier when attempting to combine the two into the supremely perfect Abrahamic God, as the Problem of Evil still represents a major hurdle that even I, one who believes in the existence of this specific idea of God, still struggle with getting over, but this is not to say that it is utterly impossible for the two Beings to be one and the same. For example, while arguments relating to free will may be flawed in many ways, many of them still do represent, at least in certain aspects, solid counterpoints to the Problem of Evil, particularly that which argues that the gift of free will to humanity by God allows us to willfully separate ourselves from God. Since God is the ultimate Perfection, separation from Him equates to separation from Good and Perfection, leading to evil that cannot be blamed on God. It may not me a perfect argument against the Problem of Evil, but I do believe that it, in combination with the previous proofs of the existence of both the First Cause and the Source of Perfection, provides extremely solid evidence for the existence of God." |

04.10.13 | tl;dr - There exists a First Cause, or "primus movens". There exists a Source of All Perfection. We run into some issues (e.g. evil) when combining them into the idea of the Abrahamic God, but the fact remains that these two concepts/entities must exist, whether or not we define them as the Judeo-Christian notion of God. |

Aquinas takes this concept to be God, or specifically, that “to which everyone gives the name God”."
So all this pretentious rambling is basically saying is that you can't have an effect without a cause therefore something must be outside this chain. This is literally the most basic argument, damn you got us good.
How do you know nothing exists? Nothing can't be observed, nothing very well may not even exist at all. Time also adjusts by weigh etc meaning that there very well may have been an extensive period where time did not exist. These are all questions that still need answering but just because there is a hole doesn't mean that is proof of God. |

The fact that there is a clear distance between God and us does not prove that It dooes not exist. It does nothing for us and the most you can prove with that is that It does nothing for us. Maybe It isn't such a caring God as Christians would try to make you believe. So, does God exist? Probably yes. Do I believe in God? Probably not.

You act like that supports the theory of God when it contradicts the theory, religious people love to claim that anyone that hasn't read the bible in entirety is ignorant when in reality a lot of people just don't want to waste the time reading something so obviously contradictory and archaic. Religious people use the word Truth and capitalize it like they are all special but no 2 zealots can agree on what truth is... in actuality all being religious is, or believing in any type of God, is saying "I don't accept the Truth as it appears, I make it up to make me feel good". |

I basically read that as "I'm right, I have no proof that I'm right, I won't explain why I'm right, there's overwhelming proof I'm wrong, etc., but I'm still right though." |

08.10.13 | George carlin sums up religion quite nicely. Basically it's bullshit. But I would never impose my opinions on someone else. Just don't tell me how I'm a bad person that needs to be saved. |

haha that's funny as shit. I actually just heard about it like a week ago cause some guy protested at a DMV or something because they wouldn't let him wear his pasta strainer (cause that's part of the "religion") in his driver's license photo

08.11.13 | I don't have an issue with religious folk, as long as they don't have an issue with the fact that I'm not one of them. My philosophy when it comes to stuff like that is that if you're getting on their nerves, they've done something to earn it. |

With 'time' I'm sure everyone's questions will be answered. Some may have them answered sooner, some later.
It is true, each person is accountable for their own actions, not those of another or a group. Whatever a person believes let it be in truth and not in ignorance. |

08.11.13 | Again, that statement is basically "I can prove it, but won't." Which, from my point of view, is you avoiding the question entirely, and just making cheap insults.
I was raised Christian, but I decided to think about it and realized it doesn't add up, and that's why I'm Atheist. If you have solid evidence that God exists, I'm open ears. But evidence is not "You're an ignorant moron, fuck off, only I get to revel in God's glory", that's the exact attitude I would expect from someone like Fred Phelps. |
