Unrealized Potential

5 bands that disappoint as they continue to "grow."
5Northlane

I know. Veteran metalcore fans will laugh at me for this one, but I'll stand my
ground. Discoveries was a semi-enjoyable album, brimming with potential and
technique. Yes, it was filled with one-note chugs and the typical harsh vocals you
normally hear in this tired genre, but one can overlook those faults and see what
their future might hold. Unfortunately, their second release didn't deliver on that
potential. Instead we get another chug-fest. Yes, there is atmosphere, but none
of that atmosphere adds anything to any of their music. Instead it just seems like
a band throwing elements together just to set themselves apart from their
contemporaries.
4As I Lay Dying

It took them a few albums, but they seemed to have finally found what they were
looking for in An Ocean Between Us. An amalgamation of Swedish melodic death
metal and metalcore, As I Lay Dying seemed to be on the brink of finally breaking
away from the staleness of the genre. It seemed even more so with their next
release, the underwhelming yet stellar The Powerless Rise. Unfortunately,
Awakened seems to be a return to their "chug first, ask questions later" mentality
from their first two Metal Blade releases.
3Bane

While a stellar band through and through, Bane might not fit onto this list to most
of you. I, however, would expect much more from the hardcore stalwart. Yes,
most of their material ranges from a 3-3.5, but they still haven't written that one
album that all legendary hardcore bands seem to produce, that game-changer.
Instead we get a consistent barrage of two-stepping and mosh pit-inducing fervor.
2August Burns Red

The talent is undoubtedly there. It bleeds all over Constellations. Songs like
White Washed and Marianas Trench show you a band that is finally progressing.
Then we have Empire. Much more of the same from metalcore's "saviors(no pun
intended)." The same lyrical themes, the same boring one-note breakdowns we
thought they had finally surpassed. It's more of the same. When are there fans
going to finally get bored of this and demand a change?
1Defeater

After two strong releases(Travels and The Lost Ground EP), there was hope that
Defeater would be the band to usher us into a new decade of melodic hardcore.
The pre-release hype surrounding Empty Days and Sleepless Nights turned out to
be just that: hype. With Empty Days, the band seemed to be struggling to set
themselves apart from what was becoming a stale genre. An album filled with
boring arrangements and sappy acoustic ballads, Empty Days was a betrayal to
what made Defeater a band to watch. Now we're just left with another boring
melodic "hardcore" band and their legions blind, and for the most part deaf,
fanboys.
