BigPleb
02.27.13 | Any of you guys own this guitar or rec Ibanez? Getting a Line 6 Spider IV 15w amp on the weekend as well. |
Winrar
02.27.13 | I owned an Ibanez GRG170dx and it was pretty solid. Only complaint would be that the pickups sound
muddy as fuck for playing shit with high distortion. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Oh right, I was told the pickups were better than the likes of Epiphone pickups an others. |
VheissuCrisis
02.27.13 | Have you checked out the Fender Mustang II amp dude? Getting it next week after playing it in a store, it has some basic recording software which is fun. |
Winrar
02.27.13 | i don't know what pickups your guitars use, but with ibanez, you can't go wrong for playing metal. Sound quality mostly depends on your amp though. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Yeah my mate told me the tone is good for metal, the Line 6 range has good reviews, saying that it also favours a heavier tone. Its £90 too, which is decent. |
Winrar
02.27.13 | Yeah, my mate owns that amp and i had some fun mucking around with it. Not bad for a beginner amp. Lots of distortion settings on it; You will probably like it. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | My friend had one with his Gibson and it sounded great, I just need to find a store where I can pick it up. |
slimdaddy
02.27.13 | Have you checked out the Fender Mustang II amp dude? [2]
I have always liked the fender amps over the Line 6. And they are about the same price |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Fender II is £199, Line 6 is £89. |
slimdaddy
02.27.13 | ahh, well in the states, both are an even $100. |
slimdaddy
02.27.13 | speaking of which, are guitars more expensive in Europe? I mean I know the pound is worth more and all, but 89 euros is like 120 US dollars right? |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Yeah about that man, you're right. |
Winrar
02.27.13 | Australian here, guitars are so fucking expensive here that i have to get them imported from the US. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Metal orientated stuff, work my way up to thrash. |
BigBlob
02.27.13 | Always learn the basics. Blues is a good place to start. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Yeah i'm not gonna jump straight in at the deep end, is Bluesy stuff easier to pick up? |
Winrar
02.27.13 | I picked up thrash as my first genre to learn. Of course, you should learn blues if you're going to play metal and i'm not recommending it, it's a must if you truly want to understand the concept of it all. I recommend just playing and learning Metallica songs (goldmine for beginners) in your free time to improve your skill and have someone or self teach yourself basic theory and concepts. |
BigBlob
02.27.13 | Blues is good for understanding how songs are structured. Its also good because with a little bit of understanding you can start playing your own simple tunes, rather than just reading tab of other peoples songs and copying them.
Also, are you thinking about a guitar tutor? They can really get you started, because otherwise you can feel a bit overwhelmed if you dont know music theory, or never played another instrument before. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | You got any like wrist warm-ups at all haha? Just my fingers become stiff from stretching after a period of time. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | I used to play an acoustic back in High School, but lost interest after a while due to other activities. But my avid interest has come back now. |
Winrar
02.27.13 | play stuff that makes your fingers hurt dude. It helps. With guitar, you notice progression pretty quickly. You will legit be able to stretch your fingers more in a noticeable amount of time if you keep playing. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | I got power chords down within about 15 minutes, just need to learn to slide it down the neck efficiently. |
Winrar
02.27.13 | Do everything slow dude. You don't need to be able to pull of slides and shit as fast as you play other parts. This is pretty much the main key to learning everything and every teacher will tell you this. 100 hours of fast practice is nowhere near as valuable as one hour of playing slowly. Build speed once you think you're confident and you're all set. |
Dolving999
02.27.13 | If you're looking for an amp with awesome metal tones, look no further than the Peavey Vypyr. |
Winrar
02.27.13 | Urgh, i was looking so hard for those but being in Australia, it was pretty much impossible for me. I eventually got a Roland Cube 20xl as my beginner amp. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | I have a budget of £100 for an amp man, and cheers Winrar, some helpful advice. |
Winrar
02.27.13 | No worries dude. I knew how hard it was when i first picked up my guitar and it makes me happy to discuss it. It's a great hobby and you'll be passing down your knowledge later on as well. |
sideburndude
02.27.13 | Just always play it everyday it's pretty easy, and play songs slow first and then speed them up. And some scales are useful too |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Yeah, you think its gonna be pretty easy when you pick one up but it can be quite overwhelming where to begin. |
sideburndude
02.27.13 | Yeah, well I guess I never completely started new on guitar because I got proficient on bass then two later I picked up the guitar which I immediately got because it was just like the bass, but with a different playing style.
Good Luck |
sideburndude
02.27.13 | And once you get the basics a teacher can be very useful since you will probably be making many mistakes you don't even know of, well at least for me on my instruments |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Thanks man gonna need it, gotta build my patience up too cos im not the most patient. Here is a pic of the guitar: http://t.co/IVKnyjk3l2. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | I just started a week ago and my fingers ache after half hour playing so might want to get some finger tips or something, Slayer's Raining Blood is dead easy though apart from that one lightning fast riff before the lyrics come in (im convinced they used a random number generator on google for that) |
Winrar
02.27.13 | Yeah, i kind of struggled during my first year of guitar because i would listen to lots of fast and technical metal, and it made me try to learn everything at the same pace... urgh...
Always learn songs in clean. Even if you're playing death metal. Play it SLOWLY without distortion until everything is pitch perfect. This sounds easy but i never took this advice seriously until 2 years of playing. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | I'll be sure to man, after time I'm sure I'll find a way of playing that suits me. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | Has anyone got any good songs to start with-preferably heavy stuff, and not Metallica because I despise them. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | How can you despise early Metallica? They were one of the bands that brought the thrash. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | Because I don't like thrash. I'm a black metal guy and nothing much else usually. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | I quite like a few songs by metallica here and there and there are a few thrash bands i REALLY dig-demolition hammer, coroner, Pestilence's debut, but aside from that I hate it. Not a fan of death metal either |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Thrash rules all. |
Winrar
02.27.13 | I love metal and i enjoy almost every subgenre. Don't think i would go far as to say i hate a genre... Some i feel are just lacking quality material. |
osmark86
02.27.13 | absolutely forbidden to play Smoke on the Water. no exceptions. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | So you enjoy power metal legitimately when all it is is wankery x100000000? fair doos each to their own. I mainly stick to black metal because i like the way that their is no pretentious bullshit like in commercial pop shit where the artists have no talent and exist purely to make money. Black metal started out as bands not giving a shit and making music purely to express their own feelings of isolation, be it from religion or from the cold or whatever, and thats what makes me respect it more than any other shit. |
Winrar
02.27.13 | Wrong list dude. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Smoke on the Water would be a good one to jam, mandatory really. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | Smoke On The Water is a shit song though. Just the same repetitive nonsense for like 6 or 7 minutes solid. |
Winrar
02.27.13 | " that their is no pretentious bullshit like in commercial pop shit where the artists have no talent and exist purely to make money."
that used to be what i sought in music during my younger years, but i generally grew to enjoy things for what they are. I don't stick to any genres because i like to broaden my taste and expose myself to all flavors that music can offer. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | Napalm Death-Scum is a good song to play on guitar actually, really easy as well I just discovered whilst dicking around.
And yeah Winrar, most people enjoy stuff like pop whe nthey are young because its catchy but you grow as a person musically as well as physically and forget about all that shit. some artists here and there are alright (kendrick lamar, im looking at you and busta rhymes!) but most is shit |
osmark86
02.27.13 | there are other riffs that are simple enough to play. this world does not need another beginner playing smoke on the water. in no way am I disencouraging anyone to start playing, hell it's one of my best decisions. just no fucking smoke on the water please :P |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | Start with some Napalm Death. thats what Ive done and their first album seems really easy but also fun to play |
Winrar
02.27.13 | To be honest, smoke on the water isn't really a helpful song to learn as a beginner. Best songs to learn would be from the classic metal bands like Sabbath, Priest, etc. I'll say just learn whatever the fuck you want. Anything that sounds simple enough, chances are, you could probably learn it. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | What Priest stuff is easy to play? |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Im trying to get Ironman down now, shit is cool. |
osmark86
02.27.13 | breaking the law is hella easy to play. |
osmark86
02.27.13 | and yeah, anything by black sabbath shouldn't be too hard to pick up. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Powery power chords all the way. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | Iron Man is pretty easy, i learnt that as well 0 7 5h7 7 riff is easy as anything.
Raining Blood is easy throughout except that crazily fast riff I refer to as the Random Number Generator riff.
Napalm Death are fairly easy
Thats all ive attempted so far really |
Winrar
02.27.13 | That's why i started off learning thrash. Those power chords made everything so simple. However, once you get into learning solos, that's a whole different story aha. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | Is Iron Maiden difficult or not? and what about Mayhem? |
osmark86
02.27.13 | if you can stand the guy --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKvYmufVmSc |
Winrar
02.27.13 | some Iron Maiden songs can be difficult. I would say their songs are generally easy, but not beginner tier. I couldn't play a single Maiden song until after at least 1 year of playing. |
osmark86
02.27.13 | I wouldn't say Raining BLood is that easy, it has some blisteringly fast hammer ons and pull offs in certain parts. |
osmark86
02.27.13 | not beginner material exactly |
Winrar
02.27.13 | Raining Blood is a simple song apart from some of the wankery, but requires some finger skills to be able to actually play it. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | I did it within 2 days except the fast as shit riff. Thats really fucking hard and i cant get it down yet. Going to attempt angel of death when ive finished the scum album probably. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | Whats an easy Maiden song (not including solos because im not going with soloing) |
osmark86
02.27.13 | best tip to get going is to learn the basics and then try to pick out songs yourself (or if not, get tabs) that you really love. that way it'll always be fun for you and you'll want to play more. key word: play more. |
osmark86
02.27.13 | most Iron Maiden songs are pretty easy. they pull out their shit on the solos. |
Winrar
02.27.13 | The trooper was the first maiden song i learnt. simple and once you perfect the intro riff and verse riffs, you have it in the bag. |
osmark86
02.27.13 | how about The Wicker Man. it's got easy lead work in the chorus, downpicking during the verse and open power chords in the chorus. it's a fun song that's real simple to play. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | I'll have a look at The Wicker Man and The Trooper then. |
osmark86
02.27.13 | yeah, once you got that one down it's time to push your limits a little. I've got a great example for that right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjUO9gs_Wns |
Winrar
02.27.13 | i love listening to dm but playing it is something i just can't stomach. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | What about some Brain Drill haha! most insane band out there. they can't write a decent song for shit but they are more technical than any band you can name-imagin Originx100000 |
osmark86
02.27.13 | it was meant as a joke :P |
osmark86
02.27.13 | yeah a lot of tech death suffers from the same illness as top tier jazz musicians. they know they're techy as fuck and squeeze in too much wankery for its own sake. songs suffer as a consequence. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | I dont have finger skills yet aha |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | Yeah exactly. Brain Drills first album was just about tolerable but then they went too OTT on their second album and shat everything down the drain. I saw them live and they can defo play it all flawlessly its just that the musics rhythmless nonsense |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | "I dont have finger skills yet aha"
thats what she said. |
Winrar
02.27.13 | They just happen man. One night you're trying to nail this song and it's not happening. You walk outside, take a deep breath and chill for an hour and when you return to guitar, you suddenly just shred the entire song perfectly.
Shit like that is the reason why i play guitar. Things just happen before you even realize. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | That department is fine, not on the guitar though. |
DominionMM1
02.27.13 | if you're gonna start with one of these, go with ride the lightning (the call of ktulu in particular). it will help with downpicking and arpeggiated picking. |
ncguitar
02.27.13 | Awesome guitar! I got it after selling my first guitar (which was crap), and had the sweetest neck for a cheap guitar. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Yeah, Hetfield doesn't know the meaning of the word 'alternate' |
DominionMM1
02.27.13 | i'd love to be able to downpick like him |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | Ride The Lightning is an album i thought about checking out as well. What are some easy-ish solos ? |
osmark86
02.27.13 | Kerry King knows how to downpick like a motherfucker |
savagecabbage
02.27.13 | hit the woodshed mang |
DominionMM1
02.27.13 | some of the leads on ktulu aren't extemely challenging |
DrGunther
02.27.13 | "and yeah, anything by black sabbath shouldn't be too hard to pick up."
Yeah, plenty of good stuff to learn on Paranoid especially. After the first two albums you ideally need to tune to C# though.
Loads of the early Metallica stuff is fairly easy to play on power chords and single notes -
Seek and Destroy
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Creeping Death
Master of Puppets
Welcome Home
Enter Sandman
Sad But True
Of Wolf and Man
And like others have said, those Line 6 amps/pods are the business for the price when you're starting out. Well worth it. |
osmark86
02.27.13 | this is a great guitar lesson for one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VofkPbBS_tA |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | I'm going to have a look at Seek And Destroy despite my hatred for that song (so long and boring) |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Wow cheers guys, nearly 100 comments m/ |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | One is one of the few metallica songs i could actually really get into purely becaue of the soft to loud dynamic. |
osmark86
02.27.13 | a little bit more serious this time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=do5gZ4vktH0
if you practice that enough times, songs will seem that much easier to play afterwards. get on it now! |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | That looks like my little finger isn't gonna move aha |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | Cryptopsys Crown Of Horns I just checked out and it opens with some alright power chords but damn are they fast. As for the trems... no... just, no.... because... no... |
osmark86
02.27.13 | begin easy, trying to play tech death right away will only disencourage you. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | Tech death for a beginner haha |
osmark86
02.27.13 | as for that exercise, yeah it's painful at first but you'll improve quickly and it will help you a lot once you begin to solo |
osmark86
02.27.13 | come to think of it, I've been hella lazy with my sloppy technique so I think I'm going to start practicing that exercise again too. |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | Except that None So Vile isn't technical at all. Whisper Supremacy was their shift to tech. NSV is a mix of power chords and trems mainly on three strings with some string shifts (i know this because my uncle can play all their stuff except some off the new album). The power chords weren't too bad just quite fast (8 of them in 3 seconds) |
osmark86
02.27.13 | still nothing I'd recommend to someone starting out |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | lmao I'm going to try and nail the tremolo picked riff after the chords and then leaving it seems hard |
osmark86
02.27.13 | you do that champ! you fucking do that! :D |
osmark86
02.27.13 | on a final note: learning shit like a pro takes about 10,000hrs of hard work according to Malcolm Gladwell (bit of a douchey pseudo-science guy who formulates theories left and right, but whatever). bottom line is skills don't come for free so don't get lazy, go crazy. |
Emyay
02.27.13 | i'd recommend learning opeth. mastodon too |
Zamora
02.27.13 | Blackwater Park and Harvest are not extremely complicated. Easiest songs from BP at least, and pretty fun to play. |
Emyay
02.27.13 | Agreed. |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | For a beginner? Really aha |
Emyay
02.27.13 | Yeah. I mean, i you're trying to learn Metallica and Slayer as a beginner, might as well learn some Opeth. |
bloc
02.27.13 | This is a good choice for a beginner, but depending on how committed you become I have a feeling you'll want to upgrade to a new guitar really fast. The Ibanez Gio models don't bring a lot of "cool" points, if you know what I mean ;) |
DominionMM1
02.27.13 | "might as well learn some Opeth. "
or better yet, learn something that's good |
BigPleb
02.27.13 | But it will ok for now, right haha? I'm itching to get out of work and jam! |
DominionMM1
02.27.13 | metallica's a good start. i think that's what a lot of guitar players learn when they're starting out. |
bloc
02.27.13 | Oh yes, it will work.
I don't want to get too technical, but before checking the specs I thought the model was a junior sized guitar, meaning the length of the neck was shorter than an actual guitar so I thought, "Shit, you might get accustomed to this guitar, then upgrade to a full sized one and be back at square one because the neck is longer". Luckily your model has a 25.5 inch scale, meaning it's the perfect length.
Btw, you might have made up your mind on an amp already, but I highly suggest looking into the Peavey Vypyr series. They are extremely versatile and affordable and they sound fantastic. |
Emyay
02.27.13 | i have a gio and its pretty shitty. i put some seymour duncan pickups in it and it sounds a helluva lot better |
Emyay
02.27.13 | "might as well learn some Opeth. "
or better yet, learn something that's good
he's right man, learn some ACDC... |
DominionMM1
02.27.13 | "he's right man, learn some ACDC... "
now you're on the trolley
|
JohnnyoftheWell
02.27.13 | Yeah, I love my Ibanez (RG7321) too, great for speedy stuff; have fun bro |
lyzakthellama
02.27.13 | These are okay but once you realize you're committed to it, you will want something different. It all comes with time and trying out different amps and guitars and do a lot of research before committing to a guitar/amp |
DeathPiercedMe
02.27.13 | ACDC... Thunderstruck... Um, hard much... |
lyzakthellama
02.27.13 | The first song I ever learned was You Shook Me all Night Long it's fun to play |
Madbutcher3
02.27.13 | I'd recommend grabbing an iPod/iPad/iPhone amp simulation app like JamUp if you need any serious recording tones. Otherwise, try a Blackstar HT5 if you ever want to get a better amp than the Spider IV, although that's a reasonably good amp anyway. |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.27.13 | First I learnt was RATM - Bombtrack |
OmairSh
02.27.13 | Congrats, no Opeth on the list? :-O |
Emyay
02.27.13 | There's Opeth in the comments ;) |
OmairSh
02.27.13 | *Phew |
Zamora
02.28.13 | Learn some RATM. Sounds cool as fuck and it's usually just easy riffage, except the solos, but even some of them are easy (but with a lot of effects).
Bombtrack, Killing In The Name and Freedom are fairly easy and really good sounding, even in my acoustic. |
