BigPleb: My Guitar Has Arrived

BigPleb 02.27.13	Any of you guys own this guitar or rec Ibanez? Getting a Line 6 Spider IV 15w amp on the weekend as well.
Winrar 02.27.13	I owned an Ibanez GRG170dx and it was pretty solid. Only complaint would be that the pickups sound muddy as fuck for playing shit with high distortion.

VheissuCrisis 02.27.13	Have you checked out the Fender Mustang II amp dude? Getting it next week after playing it in a store, it has some basic recording software which is fun.
Winrar 02.27.13	i don't know what pickups your guitars use, but with ibanez, you can't go wrong for playing metal. Sound quality mostly depends on your amp though.
BigPleb 02.27.13	Yeah my mate told me the tone is good for metal, the Line 6 range has good reviews, saying that it also favours a heavier tone. Its £90 too, which is decent.
Winrar 02.27.13	Yeah, my mate owns that amp and i had some fun mucking around with it. Not bad for a beginner amp. Lots of distortion settings on it; You will probably like it.

BigBlob 02.27.13	Always learn the basics. Blues is a good place to start.

Winrar 02.27.13	I picked up thrash as my first genre to learn. Of course, you should learn blues if you're going to play metal and i'm not recommending it, it's a must if you truly want to understand the concept of it all. I recommend just playing and learning Metallica songs (goldmine for beginners) in your free time to improve your skill and have someone or self teach yourself basic theory and concepts.
BigBlob 02.27.13	Blues is good for understanding how songs are structured. Its also good because with a little bit of understanding you can start playing your own simple tunes, rather than just reading tab of other peoples songs and copying them. Also, are you thinking about a guitar tutor? They can really get you started, because otherwise you can feel a bit overwhelmed if you dont know music theory, or never played another instrument before.

BigPleb 02.27.13	I used to play an acoustic back in High School, but lost interest after a while due to other activities. But my avid interest has come back now.
Winrar 02.27.13	play stuff that makes your fingers hurt dude. It helps. With guitar, you notice progression pretty quickly. You will legit be able to stretch your fingers more in a noticeable amount of time if you keep playing.
BigPleb 02.27.13	I got power chords down within about 15 minutes, just need to learn to slide it down the neck efficiently.
Winrar 02.27.13	Do everything slow dude. You don't need to be able to pull of slides and shit as fast as you play other parts. This is pretty much the main key to learning everything and every teacher will tell you this. 100 hours of fast practice is nowhere near as valuable as one hour of playing slowly. Build speed once you think you're confident and you're all set.

Winrar 02.27.13	Urgh, i was looking so hard for those but being in Australia, it was pretty much impossible for me. I eventually got a Roland Cube 20xl as my beginner amp.

Winrar 02.27.13	No worries dude. I knew how hard it was when i first picked up my guitar and it makes me happy to discuss it. It's a great hobby and you'll be passing down your knowledge later on as well.
sideburndude 02.27.13	Just always play it everyday it's pretty easy, and play songs slow first and then speed them up. And some scales are useful too
BigPleb 02.27.13	Yeah, you think its gonna be pretty easy when you pick one up but it can be quite overwhelming where to begin.
sideburndude 02.27.13	Yeah, well I guess I never completely started new on guitar because I got proficient on bass then two later I picked up the guitar which I immediately got because it was just like the bass, but with a different playing style. Good Luck

DeathPiercedMe 02.27.13	I just started a week ago and my fingers ache after half hour playing so might want to get some finger tips or something, Slayer's Raining Blood is dead easy though apart from that one lightning fast riff before the lyrics come in (im convinced they used a random number generator on google for that)
Winrar 02.27.13	Yeah, i kind of struggled during my first year of guitar because i would listen to lots of fast and technical metal, and it made me try to learn everything at the same pace... urgh... Always learn songs in clean. Even if you're playing death metal. Play it SLOWLY without distortion until everything is pitch perfect. This sounds easy but i never took this advice seriously until 2 years of playing.

I mainly stick to black metal because i like the way that their is no pretentious bullshit like in commercial pop shit where the artists have no talent and exist purely to make money. Black metal started out as bands not giving a shit and making music purely to express their own feelings of isolation, be it from religion or from the cold or whatever, and thats what makes me respect it more than any other shit.

And yeah Winrar, most people enjoy stuff like pop whe nthey are young because its catchy but you grow as a person musically as well as physically and forget about all that shit. some artists here and there are alright (kendrick lamar, im looking at you and busta rhymes!) but most is shit

Winrar 02.27.13	To be honest, smoke on the water isn't really a helpful song to learn as a beginner. Best songs to learn would be from the classic metal bands like Sabbath, Priest, etc. I'll say just learn whatever the fuck you want. Anything that sounds simple enough, chances are, you could probably learn it.

DeathPiercedMe 02.27.13	Iron Man is pretty easy, i learnt that as well 0 7 5h7 7 riff is easy as anything. Raining Blood is easy throughout except that crazily fast riff I refer to as the Random Number Generator riff. Napalm Death are fairly easy Thats all ive attempted so far really

Winrar 02.27.13	some Iron Maiden songs can be difficult. I would say their songs are generally easy, but not beginner tier. I couldn't play a single Maiden song until after at least 1 year of playing.

osmark86 02.27.13	best tip to get going is to learn the basics and then try to pick out songs yourself (or if not, get tabs) that you really love. that way it'll always be fun for you and you'll want to play more. key word: play more.

Winrar 02.27.13	The trooper was the first maiden song i learnt. simple and once you perfect the intro riff and verse riffs, you have it in the bag.
osmark86 02.27.13	how about The Wicker Man. it's got easy lead work in the chorus, downpicking during the verse and open power chords in the chorus. it's a fun song that's real simple to play.

Winrar 02.27.13	They just happen man. One night you're trying to nail this song and it's not happening. You walk outside, take a deep breath and chill for an hour and when you return to guitar, you suddenly just shred the entire song perfectly. Shit like that is the reason why i play guitar. Things just happen before you even realize.

DominionMM1 02.27.13	if you're gonna start with one of these, go with ride the lightning (the call of ktulu in particular). it will help with downpicking and arpeggiated picking.

After the first two albums you ideally need to tune to C# though. Loads of the early Metallica stuff is fairly easy to play on power chords and single notes - Seek and Destroy For Whom the Bell Tolls Creeping Death Master of Puppets Welcome Home Enter Sandman Sad But True Of Wolf and Man And like others have said, those Line 6 amps/pods are the business for the price when you're starting out. Well worth it.

NSV is a mix of power chords and trems mainly on three strings with some string shifts (i know this because my uncle can play all their stuff except some off the new album). The power chords weren't too bad just quite fast (8 of them in 3 seconds)

bloc 02.27.13	This is a good choice for a beginner, but depending on how committed you become I have a feeling you'll want to upgrade to a new guitar really fast. The Ibanez Gio models don't bring a lot of "cool" points, if you know what I mean ;)

bloc 02.27.13	Oh yes, it will work. I don't want to get too technical, but before checking the specs I thought the model was a junior sized guitar, meaning the length of the neck was shorter than an actual guitar so I thought, "Shit, you might get accustomed to this guitar, then upgrade to a full sized one and be back at square one because the neck is longer". Luckily your model has a 25.5 inch scale, meaning it's the perfect length. Btw, you might have made up your mind on an amp already, but I highly suggest looking into the Peavey Vypyr series. They are extremely versatile and affordable and they sound fantastic.

Madbutcher3 02.27.13	I'd recommend grabbing an iPod/iPad/iPhone amp simulation app like JamUp if you need any serious recording tones. Otherwise, try a Blackstar HT5 if you ever want to get a better amp than the Spider IV, although that's a reasonably good amp anyway.

Zamora 02.28.13	Learn some RATM. Sounds cool as fuck and it's usually just easy riffage, except the solos, but even some of them are easy (but with a lot of effects). Bombtrack, Killing In The Name and Freedom are fairly easy and really good sounding, even in my acoustic.
