12.31.12 | Good luck. Don't base your expectations for the job field from what you do in college. I'd imagine it'd be much easier getting a job with an economics degree than sociology. Maybe a minor in sociology can push you somewhere you wanna be. Do your research; or end up like me working customer service with an English degree... |

12.31.12 | "I'd be happy with a job that brings in at least 60K"
Yeah good luck with that. Even if you get a Ph.D in Sociology and decide to teach at the College level you'll probably only be making about $55-60K at an average University. |

12.31.12 | I have a Sociology degree and honestly you can get a job just as easy with it as someone with a
business degree. It's all about how you communicate what you have to employers. |

12.31.12 | And also set proper expectations for salaries. There is a 99.99% chance that you will NOT make 60k a
year right out of school. Try 30-35 if you're lucky. |

I'm not talking about right out of school, if by the time I'm 35 I'm making 60K, then that would be enough. |

01.01.13 | I've switched major so many times, and now I'm basically a dropout aiming to go back in next September and quickly pinch out the last 3 semesters of my math degree. What you study for your Undergraduate degree barely even matters anymore, so I'm done trying to find the "perfect fit." |

01.01.13 | Sociology is interesting to learn for sure but not for a career but hey try working for your municipal government you could hold some sort of managerial position in 15 years.. |

01.01.13 | The stuff that's happened for you guys really depends on your actions. Sounds like some people go the right way about switching and finishing school, and some not. I've been trying very carefully to be one of those who do it the right way. Definitely going to research my options. |

01.01.13 | Good luck man. I'm a law and economics major and although sociology can be interesting everything it preaches is backpacked knowledge from other disciplines in my experience. I'm not aiming for a debate here, just offering an opposing opinion.
Seriously though economics is boring as shit if you don't have the patience for it.
And to throw in some irony related to my first statement, I am currently reading a book on the sociological perspective on piracy as a fringe of economics. Yea the authors are totally legit and have really done their research but everything they use to back-up their claims is historic, economics, and legal.
Sociology = the spine that holds together the many different disciplinary chapters contained in the book of academia. |
