12.20.12 | Oceanic was my first Post album, but I prefer Neurosis. |
bach
12.20.12 | Definitely Isis. |
slipnslide
12.20.12 | neuro-isis |
cb123
12.20.12 | Isis easier to start with....Neurosis a lot better |
auberginedreams
12.20.12 | isis. neurosis is boring. |
RetroSpective
12.20.12 | Neurosis for sure. |
dosia
12.20.12 | Panopticon was my first post-metal album and it's one of the best in the genre and easy to get into. I'd start with this one. |
Inferis
12.20.12 | If you're trying to get into the genre I'd say Panopticon. When you actually start getting into the genre you'll listen to Neurosis for the first time and be like "Why was I listening to Isis?" |
TRMshadow
12.20.12 | listen to cb123, Isis is probably the more accessible; start with Oceanic or Panopticon. Only after you feel that you've got a good grasp on that should you try neurosis. |
bach
12.20.12 | I'm not right?
:((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( |
Yazz_Flute
12.20.12 | I like Neurosis much more personally but Isis may be easier to get in to. |
demigod!
12.20.12 | only heard a bit of each, but from the little slice of 2 that I've heard...
Neurosis
|
demigod!
12.20.12 | I just love how sludgy neurosis can get |
slipnslide
12.20.12 | my favotire bands are theory of a nicklecreed and cult of neurisis |
Trebor.
12.20.12 | neither

Conorman11
12.20.12 | Isis = Neurosis. Start with ISIS though, as they are more accessible. Panopticon being a great place. Go to oceanic, then Neurosis! |
chambered49
12.20.12 | neither they both more or less suck, isis a lot more tho |
icatchthirtythree
12.20.12 | both rule |
DamnVanne
12.20.12 | Neurosis takes a really long ass time to go anywhere, almost never features anything more than boring, repetitive riffs and bland drumming, meanwhile it's impossible to ignore the atrocious vocals. Isis flows incredibly well from section to section, song to song, and has really cool instrumentals in EVERY song. The vocals aren't half as bad as Neurosis, and they are pretty low in the mix making them easy to ignore if need be. Honestly Neurosis sounds like a stoned garage band version of Isis. Sort of like if every member of Mastodon got brain damage and thought anything they could get through without falling down was good enough to put on record
So do yourself a favor, check out some of Neurosis' albums first, that way you're not disappointed like I was after I fell into all the Sputnik hype and got some Neurosis albums. |
DamnVanne
12.20.12 | Listening to Neurosis again and it's fucking awful |
Imperial
12.20.12 | Two different feels. Neurosis is more gritty and Isis is more ethereal. Both have dat sludge. |
HitlerWonTheWar
12.20.12 | Isis is definitely more accessible. |
HitlerWonTheWar
12.20.12 | damnvanne is a fuckin retard btw, dont listen to him. |
HitlerWonTheWar
12.20.12 | "Isis = Neurosis"
this kid is an idiot too. |
MeatSalad
12.20.12 | Isis is better either way you slice it anyway so yeah start there |
Winrar
12.20.12 | Start off with Isis for sure, then jam Neurosis |
WeepingBanana
12.20.12 | list maker, did you honestly think you were gonna get a straight answer to this question? |
InFiction
12.20.12 | Panopticon by Isis was the album that got me into Post Metal and to this day, remains my favourite album of all time. Definitely start with that; you won't regret it. |
Ignimbrite
12.20.12 | They are both awesome bands and you can't go wrong with either of them. Ignore the idiots here who tell you about how much better one is than the other. |
Gwyn.
12.20.12 | "list maker, did you honestly think you were gonna get a straight answer to this question?"
Of course not, but...
Well |

12.20.12 | They are both awesome bands and you can't go wrong with either of them. Ignore the idiots here who tell you about how much better one is than the other. [2]
I'd say check panopticon from isis and the eye of every storm from neurosis first. I think isis in general is probably a more accessible band, but neurosis' breadth of quality material is insane. |
NationalRadio
12.21.12 | Isis > Neurosis
Panopticon > Oceanic |
DominionMM1
12.21.12 | go with neurosis. seriously. |
Relinquished
12.21.12 | isis is more accessible, but anyone saying that they're better than neurosis are truly ignorant only because they're saying it in an objective point of view. if you grow to appreciate one more than the other than that's ok but neurosis has better qualities that some people can't see and don't see it cuz they're just hating them cuz they're bandwagoning on the new hate train coming from the new album's feedback and cuz they can't handle the vocals. |
evilford
12.21.12 | ninja edits |
MasBarHigeuoris21
12.21.12 | Isis is not really more accessible than Neurosis. Early Isis, espcially Celestial and the Red Sea EP are not easily accesible, neither is Wavering Radiant. Neurosis is easily the better band though |
DominionMM1
12.21.12 | i've never found isis to be any more "accessible" than neurosis. |
DominionMM1
12.21.12 | yeah, that makes sense |
MasBarHigeuoris21
12.21.12 | Lol @ Baseline |
HitlerWonTheWar
12.22.12 | "stop making funny jokes guys, we all know bad taste is accessible"
Isis is more accessible, which is why you cant get into Neurosis. still a music pleb i see. listen again when youre prepared. |
Firestarter
12.22.12 | Start with Isis. I started with Neurosis and now Isis seems a bit plain to me. A really good band but Neurosis seems to have a darker denser sludgy atmosphere where as Isis is a bit light and airy, but beautiful |
slipnslide
12.22.12 | Don't start with Through Silver start with As The Sun Sets or Eye of Every Storm. |
slipnslide
12.22.12 | and listen to both because they are both great bands regardless of who is slightly better |
GiaNXGX
12.22.12 | Neurosis > Isis. But Isis is easier to get into so........... |
HSThomas
12.23.12 | Neurosis because Isis is shit. |
Gwyn.
12.23.12 | I stared off with Isis since people say it's easier
I like it. |
HSThomas
12.23.12 | Yeah but it's been copied so many times now, it just feels unoriginal and monotonous. |
FearThyEvil
12.23.12 | Neurosis but Isis might be easier to get into. |
Buzzkillr
12.23.12 | if you wanna get into post metal you should start with shit like pelican, russian circles or red sparowes tbh |
JohnnyoftheWell
12.23.12 | Start with Panopticon, and then get Souls at Zero and work through Neurosis from there |
Acrosstheshield13
12.23.12 | Isis. since they're a thousand times better than Neurosis. |
JohnnyoftheWell
12.23.12 | http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=538903&listid=94664
I made basically the same list when I was still a noob, you'll probs find it helpful |
Buzzkillr
12.23.12 | seriously though, if you're trying to get into post-metal, start with instrumental shit and move your way up to post-metal with harsh vocals since it's less accessible. |
JohnnyoftheWell
12.23.12 | Very true, Panopticon will most likely blow you away though |
DominionMM1
12.23.12 | lol @ red sparowes being pm. |
Greyvy
12.23.12 | isis is false metal neurosis isnt
|
DamnVanne
12.23.12 | The tone of being called 'false metal' alone makes it a compliment. |
OysterizerInsomniac
12.23.12 | Russian Circles |
OysterizerInsomniac
12.23.12 | Out of these two Isis but they're both great. |
Buzzkillr
12.23.12 | "lol @ red sparowes being pm."
shows how much you know |
Relinquished
12.23.12 | there's no semblance of sludge metal in the music. "oh let's call red sparowes post-metal cuz they're heavier than godspeed and have an ex-isis member". doesn't work that way. |
Buzzkillr
12.23.12 | sure they're not as heavy as most other post-metal but they definitely have sludgy moments. their earlier material is pretty sludgy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=D4s6Oo5T86c#t=164s |
Relinquished
12.23.12 | seems like you have zero idea of what constitutes as sludge |
Buzzkillr
12.23.12 | lol, why are you even arguing about this shit. fine I admit they're not as heavy as russian circles or pelican but they can definitely be seen as post-metal. Anyways, I hate arguing over genres so I'm not gonna keep this argument going, but if you listened to that song and didn't see the sludge in it, you're the one who has zero idea of what constitutes sludge. |
conesmoke
12.23.12 | They're both great bands, i find isis to be more hard hitting than neurosis. |
Relinquished
12.23.12 | lol buzzkillr you're hopless honestly. just because it gets too dramatic for post-rock standards doesn't make it post-metal, but you don't know what sludge is so it's not your fault.
and if you hate arguing then don't further it, pussy |
Buzzkillr
12.23.12 | I won't.
but you're wrong |
DamnVanne
12.23.12 | Too dramatic for post-rock? |
Buzzkillr
12.23.12 | yeah, that's not what makes it post-metal. maybe the low-tuned guitars and slower riffs... |
RiffOClock
12.23.12 | both unique in their own way >.>
right??? |
VinVal
12.23.12 | dude star with oceanic, then go to the eye of every storm, then panopticon, then through silver in blood. |
DamnVanne
12.23.12 | I don't see any value in a distinction between post-rock and post-metal. Isis, Red Sparowes, Rosetta, Russian Circles and Pelican fit in fine with Explosions, Godspeed etc. |
HitlerWonTheWar
12.23.12 | another dumb statement from damnvanne |
DamnVanne
12.23.12 | Hows about you actually articulate some kind of useful opinion rather than throwing around insults like some emotionally damaged 15 year old brat. |
SaneTBP
12.23.12 | Neurosis is better buth they also suck more |
HitlerWonTheWar
12.23.12 | "Hows about you actually articulate some kind of useful opinion rather than throwing around insults like some emotionally damaged 15 year old brat."

DamnVanne
12.23.12 | Because they can't protect them from a culture of jaded, shit-flinging little cunts |

12.23.12 | ahh, so youre saying you need protection from people like me? growing some balls might help. |

12.23.12 | also not being a sheltered little faggot, that is useful as well. |
DamnVanne
12.23.12 | stay away from my kids, creep |
BloodandRainbows
01.02.13 | I'm shocked at all the support for Isis here, I thought the consensus was that Neurosis was far better.
Isis is, of course, best. |
BloodandRainbows
01.02.13 | Neurosis has a larger, more influential body of work but Oceanic/Panopticon is a peak that's unmatched. |
evilford
01.02.13 | I love Oceanic but Through Silver in Blood is better imo. Neurosis has 4-5 albums better than Panopticon. |
DominionMM1
01.02.13 | "Oceanic/Panopticon is a peak that's unmatched."
Well, of course, but only if you ignore through silver in blood, enemy of the sun, given to the rising, the eye of every storm, souls at zero, etc. |

01.02.13 | Isis def |

hell yeah you motherfuckers should listen to eyehategod and love it, much better than almost all post-metal bands
"nah being a pussy is where its at dude!"
yeah you are a pussy no doubt |
minty901
01.02.13 | people are answering like the OP can only listen to one band. hes looking for an entry band before moving onto the other band. isis is a better entry band, regardless of whether or not neurosis is better overall. you will likely move onto TSIB and may love it the most, but as a way into the genre panopticon is a much smoother entry. |

01.02.13 | I respect those who don't choose. |
Relinquished
01.02.13 | even though you chose |
DamnVanne
01.02.13 | Not by choice did I choose. If I could tolerate Neurosis, I would say so and praise them both |
PistolPete
01.02.13 | Gawd those are both such good albums.
I like Isis better though. Listening to each Neurosis album is like being in the early stages of a relationship with a mediocre-looking woman but understanding that through time her personality will trump the looks and make her attractive in her own awesome way. And that can take a fucking long ass time my friend...
Isis takes relatively little time to fall in love with (like a model). |
Relinquished
01.02.13 | "If I could tolerate Neurosis, I would say so and praise them both"
it seems you just need to get into heavier music |
DamnVanne
01.03.13 | I've actually been on the way out of heavy music for a year or so now. I imagine I'll swing back eventually; maybe even start liking hardcore at some point. It would take that and a steady diet of beer and weed to like Neurosis. |
sjp55555
01.03.13 | Pancoption is good but why never any love for In the Absence of Truth? Dark Horse sleeper pick of the Isis catalog. |
DamnVanne
01.03.13 | I jam In the Absence of Truth all the time. Dulcinea, Holy Tears and Garden of Light are as good to me as anything else in the Isis catalog |
