| 2012 Concerts
I was hoping to see Braid tomorrow but it looks like it's gonna fall through, so here's what my live experiences were like in 2012. | | 1 | Wu-Tang Clan
Royal Oak Music Theatre. I got to cross seeing the Wu off my bucket list, but this show was a bit disappointing. There were five openers, only one of which (The Definition) was good. Ghostface was missing, and I think someone else was too (I counted 9 people on stage including Cappadonna, and RZA was not behind the turntable). Still a really fun hour-long set. Method Man was really into it, as was the crowd, who did great with ODB's verses. They also played 4th Chamber from Liquid Swords, which was cool. | | 2 | Cursive
The Grog Shop w/Cymbals Eat Guitars and Conduits. I was kind of frantic because I thought I had lost my keys, but that didn't distract me from the show, which was fantastic. Really tight musicianship, a setlist that went all the way through their discography, some good banter from Tim Kasher. A solid show. | | 3 | Bomb the Music Industry!
The Grog Shop. This was my second time seeing Bomb and it was a good time. Pretty Vacation-heavy set, which is good for me because at the time I had only heard that and Adults. Played for under an hour, but it was fun. | | 4 | Bledfest
I only saw Scale the Summit, Empire! Empire! and Pianos Become the Teeth. StS were awesome if out of place. It didn't matter, the scene kids were really into it anyway. Empire! Empire! were playing in a classroom, so I was right up with them. Pianos were disappointing, mostly because I couldn't see anyone besides the vocalist, who did a good job. Overall probably not worth $25 to go by myself (plus I bought a Scale the Summit shirt), but it wasn't bad. | | 5 | mewithoutYou
The Loft with Buried Beds and Imaginary Cities. I felt a little awkward as a casual fan amongst people who knew every word to one of the wordiest bands around. But it was a really tight show. Aaron Weiss is really engaging. | | 6 | Refused
Royal Oak Music Theater with OFF!. This was the show I had been building my whole summer around, and it delivered. I had to go by myself, but it didn't matter. The energy was absolutely insane, they played most of TSoPtC, and they look happy enough with the reunion that they'll come through again. OFF! were great too. | | 7 | Bomb the Music Industry!
Mac's Bar. The third time seeing Bomb in a year. This one sounded the worst but was by far the most fun. They apparently love playing in Lansing, and they played a longish set with some rarities as well as an impromptu cover of Bulls on Parade. Pike Room with Car Bomb and Dweller. This show was intense! The room was filled with people and hot as hell, and they moshed to everything. I was moved all over the place. Car Bomb were good too. Dweller was not. | | 9 | The Who
Joe Louis Arena with Vintage Trouble. This was 10 times better than when I saw them in 2006. Quadrophenia is my favorite album of the 20th century, and they played it all the way through, plus some other hits. Daltrey can't hit every note anymore, but it didn't matter. We also had spectacular seats. | |
