Polyethylene
12.13.12 | Feared it'd be a 5, hoped it'd be a 10, got exactly halfway between the two |
Surtur
12.13.12 | I hate how they've dragged it out so much. Three 3 hour movies for one, not even very long book. I haven't seen it yet. I'll probably like it, but it will probably be pretty boring... |
Voivod
12.13.12 | I want to see "Hobbit" ASAP. |
Ovrot
12.13.12 | Silmarillion movies when? |
Polyethylene
12.13.12 | It is a very long first part, by the way Surtur the third part is mainly going to be additional stories and stuff from the appendices as far as I know. This one was pure candy overload for Tolkien enthusiasts, and I was at no point bored, but it did feel a little drawn out in bits yes |
Polyethylene
12.13.12 | I would love to see Silmarillion as a film (or seven), I wonder if anyone could pull that off... |
Wizard
12.13.12 | I can already guarantee I will hate this movie. |
ViperAces
12.13.12 | It got 8.9 on IMDB so I have some great expectations.
Didnt like the first LOTR movie tho(the only one I saw). The books were beyond amazing. |
Surtur
12.13.12 | Ah additional stuff! Nice! I'm still looking forward to it nonetheless, but it still won't have a patch on the original trilogy. |
blastOFFitsPARTYtime
12.13.12 | Nothing happens. PJ the sellout to the days. |
demigod!
12.13.12 | yeah gonna see this as soon as i can. |
Tyrael
12.13.12 | 6/10
The riddle battle battle between Bilbo and Gollum was ace |
demigod!
12.13.12 | gonna see this stoned as fuck so that should raise it to at least an 8 |
paxman
12.13.12 | Seeing it this weekend, can't wait |
ti0n
12.13.12 | why in god's name is PJ doing 3 movies for the hobbit? I mean it's not that the book has one out of three sites of one LOTR book...
FUCK WARNER AND THEIR MONEY DRIVEN MINDS. |
Strider
12.13.12 | 8/10, lacking the immersion of the LOTR trilogy, but I did like seeing how Jackson didn't hesitate to show almost every anecdote or story |
AtomicShane
12.13.12 | did anybody notice the different fps? |
oltnabrick
12.13.12 | 10/10 better than tdkr |
pxl
12.13.12 | 48 fps+ 3D + 4k and it was amazing. You will definitely notice the difference (Fight scenes look much
better as well as the 3D effect). The movie itself is a ~7/10 |
Atari
12.13.12 | Seeing it tonight at midnight which is cool except the fact I'll have to work tomorrow on 3 hours of sleep lol |
Strider
12.13.12 | How could anyone not notice the 48 fps. plus it went so well with the 3D
|
pxl
12.13.12 | @Strider: There are still people who think that the human eye can't distinguish between 24fps and
48fps in movies... |
Friday13th
12.13.12 | I'll probably love it. The prog-rocker in me revels in long, drawn-out works of art haha. Though I did think it made no sense for the Hobbit to be three movies when the book was shorter than any of the Lord of the Rings books. Then again, I thought the extended versions of the trilogy were the only way to go. |
oltnabrick
12.13.12 | Did they add a Gandalf sex scene? |
wabbit
12.13.12 | I made weed brownies last night and the theatre I'm going that sells booze.
beyond excited. |
AtomicShane
12.13.12 | sounds like the best way to go to a movie alone |
henryChinaski
12.13.12 | I bet it sucks. |
Polyethylene
12.13.12 | If you didn't like LOTR this probably won't appeal, if you did like LOTR (especially the extended ones) then you might just love it. Didn't see it in 48fps so no idea what that is like |
TheSpirit
12.13.12 | Fuck everyone complaining about the it being 3 movies. They are using a lot of stuff from the appendices as well as giving backstory to events that weren't fully explained in the book. Plus, who doesn't want another year in middle-earth? |
Tyrael
12.13.12 | If the two other movies are better than this one then sure |
Tyrael
12.13.12 | abandon all hope now |
wabbit
12.13.12 | "who doesn't want another year in middle-earth?"
A-fucking-men

the extended scenes in the shire are so good.

12.14.12 | "Fuck everyone complaining about the it being 3 movies. They are using a lot of stuff from the appendices as well as giving backstory to events that weren't fully explained in the book."
No, what's happened is that things that are given the briefest of mentions in the book are now being extended into big half-hour long sequences in the movie |
Aids
12.14.12 | which is the complete opposite from what happened with the LOTR trilogy |
MisterTornado
12.14.12 | Just came to see Tim Canterbury in 48 frames per second |
Aids
12.14.12 | I expect to like the movie. However, more than any other book I've ever read, I have such strong imagery in my head associated with the scenes in the book because it was read to me as I was growing up, from quite a young age. I'm guessing that will stop me from loving the movie. |
BassDemon333
12.15.12 | Saw it today. For being the first of three parts, it was fantastic, and a lot of the scenes were really well done. That ending makes me really want part 2 already though. |
North0House2
12.15.12 | Seeing it with my girl tomorrow. Should be good. |
oltnabrick
12.15.12 | my girl, talkin bout my girl |
Polyethylene
12.16.12 | Yeah, because of how much time and energy it spent setting down the foundations of the story, I'm feeling part 2 and 3 will be absolutely phenomenal (LOTR quality). I wish they released them like a month apart though, not a year :( |
Satellite
12.16.12 | my only complaint is that the action got a little to cartoony at some points and made it feel like there was nothing at stake for a while.
but overall i liked the film a lot. escapism entertainment at its best. |
Polyethylene
12.16.12 | @ Aids that's why my Dad couldn't get into the LOTR movies even, because he doesn't like watching someone else's interpretation of the book when his was so vivid. |
Satellite
12.16.12 | not really any more so than any other blockbuster film. it looks like the original trilogy did. |
Dunpeal
12.16.12 | gotta say i saw a bunch of comments kinda shitting on this movie for "not living up to LoTR standards" and i gotta say all those ppl must be fags cuz The Hobbit is way better then LoTR IMO. It's filled with a bunch of dwarves kicking ass minus the homoerrotic undertones between frodo and samwise |
Trebor.
12.16.12 | I'm just obsessed with the world and the folklore and the Necromancer/Sauron and Benedict Cumberbatch doing performance capture for Smaug and Necromancer
|
Polyethylene
12.16.12 | CGI use is on par with Return of the King. It does have a very different look to LOTR, it's shiny and has this amber glow that dominates it (firelit caverns, sunrises etc.) compared to LOTR which was all grey, brown and green
I like how it has its own identity in colour, music and tone but still slides into LOTR-style moments (like Rivendell and Gollum) with total ease |
Dunpeal
12.16.12 | not sure who's bitching about the hobbit being made into a trilogy. i felt it was paced rather well. i was always engaged
and never bored. nothing ever felt like it was taking too long. some ppl just like to bitch i guess |
Polyethylene
12.16.12 | Comparison with LOTR is inevitable but kinda silly, they were very different books and are already very different movies. I doubt I will get as emotionally invested in this trilogy as I did in that one (still weep like a baby at the end of ROTK), but the silliness of these movies is a nice change from all the melodrama |
Polyethylene
12.16.12 | Yeah despite how long and unhurried it was I was never bored once. |
Dunpeal
12.16.12 | that's probably where LoTR loses me. i felt the emo stuff was way way way overdone. Hobbit feels more lighthearted and fun |
Satellite
12.16.12 | emo stuff? holy fuck you're dumb. |
Dunpeal
12.16.12 | yeah it was pretty fagtastic most of the time. good thing the story had Aragorn to unfag things up |
Dunpeal
12.16.12 | yes. emo stuff holy fuck ur gay |
Dunpeal
12.16.12 | alternate ending? from the extended cut? naw haven't seen the extended cut yet |
Polyethylene
12.16.12 | It does get a little syrupy at times (Sam's speech about "good worth fighting for" at the end of T2T in particular) but that stuff is totally what validates the action and the runtime, without it the movies would be cold and impersonal |
Polyethylene
12.16.12 | So yes the "emo stuff" is what made LOTR so memorable but The Hobbit is refreshing without it |
Dunpeal
12.16.12 | let me clarify though. i don't mind the emotion in LoTR. it was the overly gay bond between frodo and samwise to which i am referring as "emo stuff". Aragorn displayed an affection for frodo without giving the audience the sense that he wanted to perform fellatio on his anus |
ShadowRemains
12.16.12 | Silmarillion movies when? [2] |
Polyethylene
12.16.12 | I think Frodo and Sam (even in the book) were shown to be at the very height of friendship, as in they couldn't be any closer without it being romantic. Watch Thelma and Louise for another example of this |
Ovrot
12.16.12 | saw it was pretty good
looking forward to the next ones |
DeadBeat
12.16.12 | I was disappointed because I like lotr a lot an this was just ok |
derho
12.16.12 | it was like a video game. So silly and over the top. Lotr was way better |
wabbit
12.16.12 | Best movie ever |
Calc
12.16.12 | awesome movie next ones should be sweetness |
Polyethylene
12.18.12 | Really keen to see it in 48fps, some people hated it (video game comparison) whereas some say it's amazing... |
Strider
12.18.12 | it's impressive. takes a while to get used too, but it's a real treat when you do |
MisterTornado
12.18.12 | stone fight was ace |
Strider
12.18.12 | I almost forgot about the giants, great scene |
conesmoke
12.18.12 | trailer makes it look a little bit regurgitated from lotr tbh. |
Dunpeal
12.18.12 | i don't get the complaint about battles being "cartoonish" or "over the top." Do we want a dwarf dying/injured every battle so we can hinder the pacing with a teary eye moment? it's the first part of a trilogy FFS. leave the kleenex time for the next one or last one |
Funeralopolis
12.18.12 | seems ,like everyone is giving this a 7.5 |
Polyethylene
12.18.12 | You have to have quite kinetic and fast-paced action if you're juggling a group of fifteen characters all fighting... you get some lovely wide shots of all of them in a group but also a few where it shoots from dwarf to dwarf at a high speed, that might be "overwhelming" for some.
Solid 7.5, next two will surely be 9s or higher |
NightProwler
12.18.12 | Just a 7 from me. And that's being generous. Hope the next two following movies will kick ass. |
wabbit
12.18.12 | I found it really feels like the hobbit, in the same way that the lotr felt like the books.

Keyblade
12.30.12 | yeah it ruled. visually it was superb. and i don't care how much they stretch the story as long as it's still this engaging and gorgeous. seriously, that orc ambush scene had me on the edge of my seat. |
wabbit
12.30.12 | for his shooting style and types of movies he makes Jackson is such a good character director. |
TMobotron
12.30.12 | "CGI use is on par with Return of the King. It does have a very different look to LOTR, it's shiny and has this amber glow that dominates it (firelit caverns, sunrises etc.) compared to LOTR which was all grey, brown and green

I really agree with this. I also thought it had a much lighter even somewhat silly style, but I thought that fit the tone of the book pretty well (though it was a little TOO silly at a couple points). It definitely wasn't as good as the original trilogy, not that I was expecting it to be, but it's a fucking awesome movie. |
ViperAces
12.30.12 | so was your birth |
demigod!
12.30.12 | still gotta see this. my friend says its the best movie he's ever seen. I dont believe him though |
lucasjcockcroft
12.30.12 | it was boring
I don't get the draw of watching a 3 hour long movie that doesn't advance a story anywhere
then again I hated the LOTR movies. |
ViperAces
12.30.12 | 6.5/10 or 7/10 for me
the books are far better but this might be better than the first lotr imho |
demigod!
12.30.12 | Oh I do andcas |
MiniatureHorse
12.30.12 | The Hobbit was pretty decent. Not as great as the other LOTR movies, but yeah. |
Polyethylene
12.31.12 | The general consensus, it would seem |

12.31.12 | getting the shit about the necromancer and the white council was pretty cool, and hopefully they expand those stories in the next couple of flicks. the more middle earth the better |
Deviant.
12.31.12 | "for his shooting style and types of movies he makes Jackson is such a good character director. "
Have you seen Meet The Feebles? |
Polyethylene
12.31.12 | Yeah, the Hobbit material was almost doubled by all of Tolkien's appendices, explaining two pages where Gandalf was absent with fifty pages of story. I think the end result is going to be pretty sick. |
