TumsFestival: "Generic" Music Taste

TumsFestival 12.07.12	List consists of albums i've seen on lists and users say "generic list 1/5". In reality, these albums are all excellent and deserve to overall acclaim that they have.

RollieQuibbs 12.07.12	Not really that generic when you think of NickelbLech, Mike Booblay, & No Direction. Really good list actually ( not 5 or 2 ) I'm sure there are many North Americans under the age of 30 that have never heard of any of these.

omnipanzer 12.07.12	Sometimes they choose it for themselves. I couldn't pry my daughter away from stupid fucking pop/R&B radio blandness no matter how hard I tried. It's the bane of my existence. Like the other day when "Hey" by The Pixies came on the radio and she was like "oh this is horrible" (mocking me for doing it to her all the time) "can we turn it back to Clearchannel"?

stabbler 12.07.12	whenever i ask people what they like the answer is always 'i like a lot of different stuff'. whether it turns out to be true or not, i've never heard people admit up front that their tastes are generic
Polyethylene 12.07.12	People just get annoyed at the same albums cropping up a lot, but those albums get mentioned a lot for a reason - they're really fucking good. So as irritating as it may be to see OK Computer and ITAOS on every favourites list, a lot of people adore those albums with good reason. They deserve the constant mentions.
liledman 12.07.12	There are artists/albums which are generic to Sputnik, and there are artists/albums which are generic to other groups. There are no universals, generally it speaks for scenes/trends/crowds/groups/etc. A generic collection of albums or choice of albums is not in itself a jab at the actual albums, just the list maker. Calling the albums themselves generic is another thing.

Nothing wrong with liking 'generic' music some of it is great. But it's just pointless listing stuff everyone knows. One of the main reasons people come here is to find new music and seeing the 400th 'Iron Maiden Ranked' list gets a bit old.

Gwyn. 12.07.12	@Menawati Because everyone knows metallica, so a lot of people can hop in a discuss something, but when you choose largely obscure things, chances are only a handful of people have heard some of the albums, it's almost guaranteed that no one will have heard them all.

Now, there'll be users waiting to point out what a retard I am but if I started paying attention to try-hard people who listen to "different" or "elite" music, I'd be the biggest sucker of them all. The childish conformity on this site is ridiculous. Every song is written with a specific intention and that's the beauty of it. Just because you don't like an artist doesn't mean they suck. Just because it's mainstream music doesn't mean it sucks either. Make your own choices and ignore anyone with who starts with their elitist crap. The only reason I'm here on sputnik is that it's a very good way to broaden your taste in music.

While there may be novelty in listening to music nobody else has really heard, or that some of the more unique music can be found when you dig super-deep, at the end of the day how beloved or well-known the music is doesn't effect it's quality in either direction. Listen to popular stuff, listen to obscure stuff, whatever. Just don't hate chrissake
