10 Guitarists That Have Shaped Me

10 who have strongly informed the way I play, along with my favorite album on which they were featured.
10Captain Beefheart
Trout Mask Replica

The Mascara Snake - Ripped through the blues, then basically invented Post-Punk.
He taught me that psychotic discord is not only acceptable, it's beautiful.
9Slint
Spiderland

Dave Pajo - Illustrated the immense power of two-tone semi-chords to inspire and to
terrify. He took structure and melody to the very brink of falling apart without
pushing it all over the edge.
8Pink Floyd
Wish You Were Here

David Gilmour - Gilmour's technique is the epitome of sexy, like a slow-dance after a
smooth toke.
7Dinosaur Jr.
You're Living All Over Me

J. Mascis - Melded showmanship with indie trash-fuzz. I adore every solo he's ever
performed.
6The Beatles
Abbey Road

George Harrison - The suite at the end of Abbey Road contains some of the most
evokative, inspiring guitar lines ever to have crossed my ears.
5King Crimson
In the Court of the Crimson King

Robert Fripp - I chose an obvious album, but his later experiments with drone and
feedback were just as meaningful to me as his crazy proto-math prog stuff. He's
such a fascinating, multi-faceted player.
4My Bloody Valentine
Loveless

Kevin Shields - Guitar impressionism. Few understand quite so distinctly how the
instrument works. None can so potently exploit it.
3 Gang of Four
Entertainment

Andy Gill - Sharp, airless, canned fury. Gill treated guitar like architecture. His lines
were just the blueprints. No need to flesh out the structure. When he strikes a chord,
it stings... but it stings so good.
2Yo La Tengo
I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One

Ira Kaplan - When I saw Yo La Tengo about a year ago, it changed everything I
thought I knew about music and rocking out. After about a ten minute noise-jam,
Kaplan took his guitar by the strings and started bouncing it up and down, then
tossed it on top of his amp and trotted casually over to the keyboard to bang out yet
another crazy melody over the ensuing clouds of feedback. God damn.
1Television
Marquee Moon

Tom Verlaine - The guitarplay on Marquee Moon is, for me, the pinnacle of the art.
Evocative and beautiful; simple yet undeniably skillful and perfect. Not a sour note,
ever.
