DamnVanne 12.07.12	I don't understand the appeal of Lightning Bolt. They're a spastic and vaguely erotic bunch of goofballs with a gimmicky arsenal of instruments. No focus, no direction, and a very bizarre sense of melody. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum sounds pretty cool though. Minus the comparison to Swans.

I think they make the same heavy, apocalyptic kind of music, at a lot of points in the Seer I could've sworn I was listening to Sleepytime. I personally love Lightning Bolt, it has the visceral appeal of metal, the fluidity of prog and the colourfulness of indie. Each to their own

DamnVanne 12.07.12	I didn't like Swans. The comparison is valid; I just listened to a few SGM songs and I kinda liked it. Concerning Lightning Bolt: all those things may be true, but my problem is that they lack the scope and structuring of prog rock, the attitude of metal (the spirit of metal, if you will), and the catchy nature of indie or any other type of rock. BTW, where is a good place to start with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum?
Polyethylene 12.07.12	I think my love for Lightning Bolt formed when I realised that all music is really is noise. It can be pretty and meticulously organised noise, like some fancy fairy cupcake, or it can be raw, meaty and pure noise, like a delicious fucking 1kg steak. Pop, rock and indie music are the former, noise rock and drone is the latter. I love both. Lightning Bolt are loud, chaotic and unrefined yes, but the noise they make come through my speakers sounds just as valid and as awesome as any other noise any other band can make. It's just a different species of noise, and if it doesn't hit home and make you feel something then all that is is a shame. There will no doubt be bands and genres you adore that will sound like shit to me also, that's just the way it works. The now defunct Sleepytime (weep) made three albums: Grand Opening and Closing, Of Natural History, and In Glorious Times. All are great and I would struggle to choose a favourite. Start with the first one :D

DamnVanne 12.07.12	Actually no, I'm not that into Rush. I'm a huge prog nerd, and I love the proto and classic stuff and the modern prog bands (I would probably give Steven Wilson a handjob if he asked), but Rush has never done it for me. It's lame because most people's acquaintance with prog rock begins and ends with Rush, and I don't even have any legitimate complaints about their music. I think I get what you're saying about music as noise. I love some of the dronier and more pretentious post-rock because of the focus it puts on one melody, or even one note, to really drive home that music isn't necessarily a shiny thing fabricated from simpler bits. It's kind of a lesson in absurdism.

I think my deal is that Rush takes an approach to traditional rock that has the fundamentals of prog, but bands like Yes, King Crimson and Porcupine Tree use elements of rock to make something else. Though I haven't bothered yet with Rush's concept albums. I'm more familiar with Signals, Moving Pictures, Snakes and Arrows and the like. To be honest I couldn't get past the "Lunacy, lunacy" chant in The Seer. I prefer my post-rock to be sans vocals, and the oddness of that passage is indicative of the reasons why.

I consider that chant in Lunacy to be a way of attempting just that but with vocals. Whether it is successful in that of course is up to the listener, but I think in the context of post-rock vocals should be treated and considered as just another instrument. Not to force The Seer down your throat, but I really think you'd dig it if you gave it time. Lunacy is the weakest track in my opinion, don't let 60 seconds of music ruin a two hour album for you

I don't know if you listened to Vessel's Helioscope, but there are a couple songs with vocals, but the lyrics all seem to be nonsense, a not-quite-coherent string of words that sound really cool. I almost felt as if that repetition of the word 'lunacy' was meant to drive me insane, and however clever that is to draw someone into a concept or theme, I wasn't digging it. I'll give it another try tomorrow, though.
Polyethylene 12.07.12	Messing with people's heads is something Swans have always loved doing, generally through nauseating repetition or super-subtle transitions. I love that shit. Good luck, I hope you dig it more this time!
