12.02.12 | There's a lot of good stuff here, but where's Royal Thunder? |
Keyblade
12.02.12 | great to see 2 so high |
greg84
12.02.12 | @modernman2:
I didn't like Royal Thunder that much. The disc is too samey for my taste. It has some killer tracks though. |
porch
12.02.12 | reminds me i need to 1 that twelve foot ninja album |
HeyListen
12.02.12 | Not my cup of tea, but to each his/her own. |
greg84
12.02.12 | you hit the nail right on the head dude |
JamieTwort
12.02.12 | Nice list, a few of these will definitely be on my end of year list if I make one. |
greg84
12.02.12 | thanks jamie, which ones? |
JamieTwort
12.02.12 | 2, 15, 27, 36 and 49 will definitely be there. Some of the others might depending on how many I choose to do. 21 and 25 are possibilities along with a few others. |
greg84
12.02.12 | You actually heard 21 and 25. Awesome! |
Inveigh
12.02.12 | cool list man, I definitely see a lot of these making my year end list (High on Fire, Deftones, P.O.S., Converge, Om, Soundgarden, Torche, Killer Mike, Menomena and possibly a few others).
There's still quite a bit on here I want to check out too |
greg84
12.02.12 | Thanks man. Yeah. I think you may like some of other albums on here. You should check out sludge-tagged LPs at least. |
Lambda
12.02.12 | Good list, I love 13 and 34. Check out Gatling - Beforemath! |
Detritivore
12.02.12 | Propaghandi " Failed States" must be in every 2012 list |
clercqie
12.02.12 | Massive props for Kapitan Korsakov man! It probably won't end up as high, if I'll make a list though.
I should definitely check that Pop 1280 album, same label as The Men (who's latest I thoroughly enjoyed), so that can't be bad. |
Recspecs

greg84
12.02.12 | @Lambda:
It sounds solid even though I don't really like the singer.
@Detritivore:
I've never been a huge fan of Propaghandi for some unknown reasons.
@clercqie:
I really liked the previous record of The Men. This year's one is very hit-or-miss. Pop. 1280 are really cool when it comes to depicting post-apocalyptic visions. The music is simple and totally hypnotic. |
greg84
12.02.12 | Well. If you like massive riffs and complex song structures you should definitely enjoy it. |
clercqie
12.02.12 | Count me intruiged!
Yeah I can see why someone would find it hit or miss, but it just works for me. Oscillation is def song of the year for me, no competition. |
greg84
12.02.12 | @Xenophanes:
Thanks a bunch. They've already released 4 videos for this album, which is a bit mind-boggling these days. But yeah, it's clearly my album of the year. I have no doubts.
|
greg84
12.02.12 | @clercqie:
I don't really remember this track. I guess I need to re-listen to it. |

menawati
12.02.12 | nice choices greg |
greg84
12.02.12 | @clercqie:
This track has this post-rockish vibe to it. I like it even though it's hardly my favorite from this album.
@menawati:
Thanks man. I think you should like some of those (the ones you haven't heard). |
klap
12.02.12 | assuming you disliked any albums that slowly fused different genres together |
clercqie
12.02.12 | Yeah it's def post-rockish, but at the same time, the energy they infuse it with makes it way more interesting than most post-rock songs I've heard this year - except maybe for Mladic.
Crap my pop 1280 dl has a password :/ |
menawati
12.02.12 | 1,2,3,13,17,25,36 would be in my top 50 if i did one, the ones that havent heard I'll check (bookmarked) - but coheed above rush aaaahh makes me sad ;] |
greg84
12.02.12 | @klap:
good point, I changed it
@menawati:
Yeah. I don't know what I was thinking. This part of the list was tricky to rank. |
TheNotrap
12.02.12 | Good choices Greg. My favourites here are 48, 45, 38, 36, 29, and 5.
Jamming #11 at the moment. |
greg84
12.02.12 | Thanks man. 5 is amazing. It should be more popular here. |
TheNotrap
12.02.12 | Cauldron Of The Wild received a warm reception from critics and fans. Interesting doom revival. |
greg84
12.02.12 | and Uta Plotkin... I'm in love. |
TheNotrap
12.02.12 | Yeah her voice is very distinctive. Powerful but still warm. |
greg84
12.02.12 | Yeah. 2 and 18 rule hard. I'm pleasantly surprised that 18 is getting so many points in the users' voting. Who knows? It may even make it. |
silentpotatosfan
12.02.12 | 9 is 1 so shit list you suck fucking gay name too greg wow youre a faggot |
Nagrarok
12.02.12 | A number of these I very much enjoyed; some I need to catch up on as I haven't managed to keep track of new releases so well during the last few months. And nice list of course ;) |
NightmareCinema16
12.02.12 | Good to the Beardfish back on the list. |
Metalstyles
12.02.12 | Nice list Greg, can always count on you to rep the kind of rock no one else does here. Also, I haven't checked out 1 thus far, but I really want to know what Greg's #1 album from 2012 sounds like so I'll get to it at one point for sure. |
greg84
12.02.12 | @Nagrarok:
Of course I recommend 1. Thanks man. Looking forward to your list.
@Metalstyles:
You're right. I included some discs that only I've heard on this site. There are quite many of them this year. Well. I hope some people will check them out. I'll probably review 30 soon. |
SteelErectedb4you8er
12.02.12 | Nice list, Greg. We definitely see eye to eye on a lot of the releases. |
greg84
12.02.12 | Definitely. I'm quite sure you haven't heard some of those though. |
MisterTornado
12.02.12 | 16 came out in 2011 |
SteelErectedb4you8er
12.02.12 | 33/60 I have not heard. I can assure you Dave Matthews Band will not be heard by my ears, as well as a couple others. I wish I spent more time listening to newer shit and keeping up, but there's so much stuff and I am focused on our stuff and helping out the local scene with my website that I don't take the time to do so. Plus, I am trying to go with the old school approach of taking a lot of time to digest albums over time especially from bands that I love and can't wait to hear them. Cauldron of the Wild sold me when I saw Witch Mountain live. You don't know how much I love Uta after her performance. |
greg84
12.03.12 | @MisterTornado
16 came out in 2011 only in New Zealand. It has come out this year in the US and Europe. That is why it is here. |
greg84
12.03.12 | @SteelErectedb4you8er
Cauldron Of The Wild is definitely the best doom I have heard this year. It also takes me quite a lot of time to digest music. Well... at least in comparison with some people on here. |
Ecnalzen
12.03.12 | I've only heard two of these. I feel like I am missing out. |
MeatSalad
12.03.12 | Sweet list, have you heard Colour Haze's new LP? I think you'd dig it |
greg84
12.03.12 | A lot of people rec'd me this one and I totally forgot to check it out. Thanks for reminding me. |

12.03.12 | Great list man, lots of amazing albums. Samsara's second record should be somewhere on this list even though it's not that good as their first. Also, the new Colour Haze record She Said it's disappointing, but to be honest I never liked them too much, I don't know why. |
omnipanzer
12.03.12 | Props on 22, I need to check out 57 still. |
greg84
12.03.12 | Thanks. I will check out this Colour Haze record anyway. Samsara? I haven't even heard of them. |
menawati
12.03.12 | listened to 5, really great |
JamieTwort
12.03.12 | New Colour Haze album is good. |
Jethro42
12.03.12 | Sweet list!
44, 36, 24, 22, 8, 5, 3 and 2 will probably be all on my end of the year list.
Bookmarked for the albums I havent heard in depth (55, 50, 27, 21, 15, 10 and stuff. Still need to hear 11. |
greg84
12.03.12 | Thanks a bunch Daniel. You need to hear 1 too. |
YankeeDudel
12.04.12 | how you gonna say you are attracted to eclectic and genre bending albums but most of this list is just generic stoner rock/metal, hard rock, alt rock, heavy metal, and sludge shit like really try branching out a little bit cuz there are only about 10 albums here that are worth anyone's time. |
greg84
12.04.12 | You misread it, I'm afraid. I was referring to albums on the list that, mostly the ones which are ranked high, blend many different genres. I wasn't referring to my taste as eclectic at all, though I think it's still quite diverse. I've got some art pop and hip hop albums on the list for example. I'm also really fond of soul, which may not be very apparent this year. |
YankeeDudel
12.04.12 | i was talking about the list. and yea like i said there are a couple really good albums here that i dig. just most of it is kind of derivative to me with stuff ive heard a million times over. but hey rock on maaaaan. |
greg84
12.04.12 | It's cliche, but to each his own. I'm sure I won't dig some/many albums on your list. Sometimes simplicity is all you can ask for. |
menawati
12.04.12 | just listening to 46, sounds totally bonkers, like it |
cb123
12.04.12 | cool list man, i won't be able to make a 2012 list for years i think, have a huge backlog of albums due to trying to branch out my tastes a bit |
greg84
12.04.12 | @menawati:
The only thing I don't dig very much about 46 is the vocals. Other than that, the album is really great. It sounds like Coheed And Cambria went jazz fusion.
@cb123:
Your're right. I personally have a lot of neo-soul albums to check out. |
greg84
12.04.12 | You're not the first who's noticed it. Well... the competition was really stiff this year. |
Ovrot
12.04.12 | which has the most riffs |
greg84
12.04.12 | 1 of course |
greg84
12.05.12 | A mesh-up of afrobeat and psychedelic rock of World Music by Goat enters the list at 55. Reason: me being forgetful. |
clercqie
12.05.12 | Should be much higher man ;] |
greg84
12.05.12 | you may be right, now I think 50 should be much higher too |
menawati
12.05.12 | if you are taking votes then coheed should be way lower hehe |
greg84
12.05.12 | it's solid imo, way better than their last one for sure |
greg84
12.09.12 | Here's an updated and a bit extended list:
http://rateyourmusic.com/list/greg84/gregs_top_albums_of_2012 |
Jethro42
12.09.12 | Hawk Eyes - Ideas
rules hard. |
greg84
12.09.12 | Yeah it does. It so happens that I've seen your list. Great picks! |
Jethro42
12.09.12 | Thanks Greg.
I realized I forgot Dead can Dance - Anastasis
But hey, the limit was 10 votes. |
greg84
12.09.12 | It's not easy to pick out your top 10 albums. I've heard that some users decided to vote tactical (skipping the releases that for sure won't make the final list). I'm glad you didn't do it. |
Jethro42
12.09.12 | =] |
menawati
12.09.12 | seriously tho, when your true top 10 has absolutely zero chance of getting more than 1 or 2 votes there isn't any point in even posting it in the thread, half of mine were albums i added myself to sput that have only my rating (and im pretty sure thats the same for quite a few other people) |
greg84
12.09.12 | Well... I hear you on this. There are always two sides of the coin. Tbh I also purposefully voted for one album that's not in my top 10 (but in my top 20) because I noticed it had some surprising wave of support. |
greg84
12.15.12 | "New Colour Haze album is good"
^Yeah. I confirm. The last track with this orchestral instrumentation is especially amazing. |
Gyromania
12.15.12 | glad to see moms at 5. |
greg84
12.16.12 | I really had difficulty ranking it. It's between 5 and 7 for me. It's such a consistently great album. |
