Stars Of The Lid: Ranked

I really, really don't care that I have "entry-level" taste in ambient music. SotL/Eluvium/Brian Eno all day errr day.
8Stars of the Lid
Gravitational Pull vs the Desire for an Aquatic Li

Unfortunately, the best-named Stars of the Lid album is also their worst. Still a
very effective piece of ambient music, but its quality is surpassed many times over
by their later work.
7Stars of the Lid
Music For Nitrous Oxide

Their first LP was a decent effort, but they hadn't quite found their sound yet.
6Stars of the Lid
Avec Laudenum

Very overrated, but still great. I can't quite figure out why fans seem to
unanimously agree that this is the best pre-"Tired Sounds" album. While it's great, I
barely listen to it, as Per Aspera is similar, but better.
5Stars of the Lid
Per Aspera Ad Astra

I'm not sure why this one gets passed over in favour of Avec Laudenum so often;
this is easily the better album for me.
4Stars of the Lid
Carte-De-Visite

A really well put together compilation including some live tracks, and some rare
radio footage. Essential listening for fans of the band.
3Stars of the Lid
The Ballasted Orchestra

Such a unique and interesting record within their discography. It doesn't touch the
top tier, but it's substantially ahead of the rest of the pack in my opinion.
2Stars of the Lid
And Their Refinement Of The Decline

My absolute favourite ambient album, though I there are a few others I would
consider to be "better." My personal connection with this one came about in 2009
when I took four months to backpack. I had a week of volunteering on the
Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. It was hard work, but every day we got "siesta" from
12-2. I would pick out my favourite hammock, grab my over-ear headphones, play
this album, and just drift away - the warm, tropical air breezing softly, banana and
palm trees dotting the foreground, the blue Pacific ocean stretching out as far as
the eye could see. It was pure bliss, like I've never experienced before or since.
1Stars of the Lid
The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid

Not my favourite by them - not quite - but their best, in my opinion. While the
album is massive in length, not one moment manages to feel like filler. The entire
album washes over me in a way that very little music can do. If everyone in the
world was required to listen to this album once a week, we'd have peace on Earth.
