Costa is the worst coffee franchise in the UK. Even Caffe Nero beats them.
Also, I was trying to explain how there are two types of hipsters to someone yesterday: the "dear God you listen to AC/DC they suck generic mainstream" Sputnik-type hipster and the "hurr durr frenz hav ifone must buy" type of hipster. I couldn't quite convey that idea though.
And Starbucks is awesome. But Apple does fucking blow. And Iowa is really not that bad GNFR, it's Vol 3 you want to stay away from. And for the love of Ktulu don't listen to MFKR. Being hipster for Slipknot is not worth the torture :p
Finally, Stranger, he will NEVER get respect on here with THAT musical taste. Not even after 8 years and 300 reviews. |

StrangerofSorts
11.22.12 | "Stranger, he will NEVER get respect on here with THAT musical taste. Not even after 8 years and 300 reviews."
Not here, no, but it's often a taste twinned with the idea of listening to "real" music, which is implicitly a stance that suggests perceived superiority. What I'd love to see in these type of lists is some more modern, leftfield or varied albums. This list describes a particular scene; scenes carry fashion; fashion is designed to impress. No?
I mean I'm fine with these kinds of lists for the most part, but this particular one was made in order for the guy to portray himself as superior (Hipster being a derogatory term and all). Maybe he should stop worrying about what other people listen to and concentrate on maturing his own taste. Splashing in some post-rock, noise, folk and the like to get a greater appreciation of music as a whole.
But then again he won't: anything new will be rejected on the basis of fashion. |

ReturnToRock
11.22.12 | Stranger, IDK if this was intentional or not, but you destroyed your (fair) point by telling him to GO LISTEN TO HIPSTER MUSIC.
Anyway, yeah, classic rock people were hipsters...10 years ago, before hipsters existed. I'm hella hipster to kids who only listen to radio music. But I'm not A hipster, if that makes sense (it probably doesn't, but there's a slight difference).
His taste mirrors mine, and I still get seen as some sort of Neanderthal who doesn't know what "real music" is just because he doesn't want to listen to songs over 7 minutes long/consisting of random noises/with no choruses/sung by bands nobody knows/all of the above. That was my point/slightly sarcastic observation.
Tl;dr you had a fair point but ruined it by telling him to go listen to Sputnik-approved music, whilst sounding rather arrogant about it. |
StrangerofSorts
11.22.12 | Hm, maybe. I was trying very hard not to direct him to what I personally like - but I was unaware that folk was necessarily over-praised on Sput. It's a very broad genre, of which only a sliver is often brought up here. Same could be said for post-rock: it's only a certain type that gets pushed here. |
ReturnToRock
11.22.12 | That's a fair point, and one I agree with. It's not about the genres, though, it's about the mindset people have on this website that everyone should like these genres and nobody should have any problems with them (personally: lack of choruses - for post rock, bores me to tears - post and indie). In addition, it's about how people who happen to like more basic, catchy, singable music are seen as barely-sentient orcs and berated from on high by the lords of Sputnik. It does get kind of grating. |
Minus.
11.22.12 | I hate the Hipsters that hang out at Starbucks next to my job. They sit outside for hours and try to act cool. I should shoot at them with a paintball gun next time I drive by them in my car. |
StrangerofSorts
11.22.12 | That's kind of with I was getting at as well (which is good - I like agreement). Listening to music for enjoyment's sake alone is what we're after, even if it does mean I have to continuously defend my love affair with overly-emotional Romanian electronic music. In terms of what I was previously saying, this meant just going out to explore a bit: there are more parallels between genres than you think.
Also, I have to say I used to be a lot more elitist until I had a girlfriend who absolutely loves catchy stuff.
...There's way too much side-scrolling involved in this. |
GnFnRs87
11.22.12 | I agree with Stranger's point about the side scrolling and the enjoyment factor in the music, hence why these albums rule, cos they're all fun ...

people hate on bands like Manchester Orchestra, Frank Turner, and other hipster bands waaaaaay more than KISS and Aerosmith on this site. and i mean, every genre has good and bad music. i dont know why you're attempting to win me over with ACDC, Kiss, Aerosmith, and GnR.
if you made a list that contained some classic rock that i hadn't heard before the age of 14 then maybe i would agree with the sentiment more but i dunno man, the whole "METAL AND ROCK RULE INDIE IS GAY" crowd seems to dig their own grave by constantly mentioning the same handful of albums.

11.23.12 | "KISS are pretty bad though except for maybe a dozen hits IN MY OPINION"
More like 6/7.
I just hate the 'generic band, sux' comments from people who just hate the band on sight. I have heard something by 90% of the bands I hate on - and yes, I have heard a fuckton of indie, and been bored to tears by it. No choruses, no riffs, no...nothing. Nothing to bring me back time and again the way classic rock does.
Again, my problem is not so much with the bands as with the people who say 'you don't like indie, you like Green Day/AC/DC, your opinion is invalid'. Which is 90% of this website right now. I respect everyone's music taste (except for people who like Nickelback or Ke$ha), so why can't people accept that I derive pleasure from listening to a band like Green Day, and that Pink Floyd nearly put me to sleep? |
Aids
11.23.12 | most people can accept that, you're just choosing to focus on the idiots.
you've got the blinders on man, virtually every band gets hoards of "band sux" (with no argument) comments.
and I'm sorry but
"and yes, I have heard a fuckton of indie, and been bored to tears by it. No choruses, no riffs, no...nothing. Nothing to bring me back time and again the way classic rock does. "
indie rock doesn't have choruses or riffs? it's fine to dislike an entire genre/style (well actually no not really, especially when it's something as broad as "indie", but for argument's sake....), but you should be mature enough to say that it simply doesn't sound nice to you, instead of making statements that support the claims I made earlier about "meatheads" |
Aids

Also your comment about indie is frankly retarded. Go check out The National and then reread what you wrote. |
Aids
11.23.12 | why did you only respond to the bit of my post that was irrelevant to the argument, and only mentioned for effect? |
ReturnToRock
11.23.12 | Well to be fair I just discovered the Pixies are considered 'indie', so yeah, maybe I do like some indie.
To be fair, again, I'm unclear on what exactly constitutes indie. I'm thinking of 10 million bands I've heard who all sound the same (plink-plonky guitars, mid-fast drum shuffle, and someone who sounds like a less annoying James Blunt singing over it) as well as pretentious kind-of-folk-but-not-really artists. I'm sure there's more, though.
As for why I pointed out that statement, it's because I happen to think KISS have even less hits than you give them credit for.
Re: Nickelback and Ke$ha, because people who think they're good should not be allowed to talk about music. Because Chad Kroeger is a tool and Ke$ha is a walking vocoder - where's the merit in that? |
Aids

just quickly cause people are too busy fucking with you to give you a real answer (and I will soon join them): emo means either Screamo, which is a very specific brand of chaotic hardcore punk (which does NOT include Glassjaw, by the way), or a style of midwestern emo that became popular in the 90s with bands like American Weekend and Cap'n Jazz.
just because you think someone's voice sounds whiny, or that the music sounds like it's made by "pussies" does not make it emo. it's an actual genre, not just a buzz word for grumpy old men to use to dismiss multiple genres of contemporary music (though it most certainly is that, too). |

I haven't been on here long, but after reading some of his posts/tastes, it seems he's one of those people who thinks any band that plays hard rock/metal, has members with long hair tattoo's and muscles, and has a guitar solo on at least every album, no matter how cheesy or horrible they are, is great...just my speculation... |
