But seriously, earthquake prediction is so, so far from an exact science that condemning them for not predicting an earthquake is basically akin to sentencing a fortune teller for giving a bad fortune.
Also, how will this impact the geosciences and seismology community? What scientists will be willing to fill those shoes now that the 7 are in prison? I know that if I were a scientist in a country where failing to predict something that's currently almost impossible to predict would result in prison, I'd stay the hell away from any risk assessment job. This is unfortunate, because these jobs save lives: I mean, look at something like Mt. St. Helens in 1980, or Mt. Pinatubo in 1991. Without the efforts and predictions of scientists, tens to hundreds of thousands of lives could have been lost in each of those, and those are just two examples.
In conclusion: fuck the Italian government and legal system. |

Idk how it is in Italy but in Canada you do joint programs for scientific legal studies. Example: Joint, M.Sc. Aerospace Engineering/J.D. Law.
and lets say that you wanted to become further qualified you would apply to a masters program. Example: L.L.M. Air & Space Law. |
