Sing The Sorrow Ranked

Decided to rank what is probably my favorite album, at least in the rtop 3 of rthem. This album is timeless, and each song is deserving of a listen. rRanking was really hard because I love each song, and I have rnothing ragainst the bottom tracks, they just aren't my favorite.
1AFI
Bleed Black

A tough tie between this and The Leaving Song Part II but everything about this song
screams emotion. The verses switch it up between driving and mid-paced, leading into
a fantastic chorus. The way this song flawlessly transitions is amazing, and each
instrument complements one another so well. From the dynamics and the haunting
bridge that leads back into the song, this has it all. Favorite lyric: "Like morphine cuts
through, through dead end veins, I'm numbing in these days"
2The Leaving Song Part II

Outstanding tapping opens this slow-paced but heavy song. The guitar parts are
probably my favorite out of everything in this song, but the lyrics are certainly a
highlight and the gang chants in the chorus rule as well. I think as a single, this song
is a great representation of what AFI had to offer around this time. One of the first
post-2000 AFI songs I learned on drums. Very close for number #1. Favorite lyric:
"I've thought too much, you won't find anything worthy of redeeming"
3...But Home is Nowhere

Holy shit this song. Absolutely epic closer that features everything you'd expect from
AFI. This top 4 ranking could be interchanged, and at this point I'm thinking this song
should be higher. But I'll keep it where it is. Anyways, the chilling atmosphere at the
beginning of this song is very reminiscent of the horror punk AFI were known for
circa-Black Sails but combined with the new take on their sound. The bridge is one of
the best you'll ever hear with Davey's relentless screams. Favorite lyric: "I lay strewn
across the floor, pieced up in sorrow, the pieces are lost, these pieces don't fit, pieced
together incomplete and empty"
4Death of Seasons

I was taken aback the first time I heard this by the heavy presence of synth in this
song, something fans of early AFI probably weren't expecting. Anyways, from the
bass intro and the pounding bass drum kick accompanied by Davey's shouts through
the melancholy outro, this song deserves a spot in the top of any Sing the Sorrow
ranking. Unbelievable how powerful Davey's use of "fuck" is. Favorite lyric: "And I
disintegrate 'cause this hate is fucking real and I hope to shade the world as stars go
out and I disintegrate"
5Paper Airplanes (Makeshift Wings)

This song starts with a punch and hardly lets up. One of the faster songs on the album
and their Art of Drowning sound shines through here. This song really shows the
growth between the two albums, something that is hard to hear through songs like
Girl's Not Grey. The drums in thing song are pounding and along with Hunter's bass
really drive this song forward. The harmonized vocal parts in the chorus are a definite
highlight, WATCH THEM BURN. Favorite lyric: "Dancing in the rain of descending ash,
dancing in your dust, I'll see you all falling, I'd stop it, had you a heart"
6This Celluloid Dream

For the longest time this was my least favorite song on the album, but clearly its
grown on me. I think the lyrics turned me off because I didn't see them to be as
fantastic as the other songs'. Jade's guitar parts through the verses works so well and
carries over flawlessly into the pre-chorus and so on. The way this song fluctuates
between calm with Davey's singing into explosive instrumentation and his screams
makes it a standout track. Favorite lyric: "In the shadow of a star, in static pallor, I
realized I never began"
7Dancing Through Sunday

One of post-2000 AFI's heavier cuts, this track showcases exemplary guitar playing
from Jade, I always used to love the pick slides and his solo does precisely what it
needs to without overstaying its welcome or going too far. Even in 2 and a half
minutes this song is able to accomplish just as much as any longer AFI song. The
bridge works as well as any of their others, and the chorus is easily sung along with.
The ferocity from this song shows that AFI isn't disengaged from their past. Great live
song. Favorite lyric: "We all have no chance in this horrid romance
8Silver and Cold

#2 of the singles comes in at 8 on this ranking. This is a true AFI ballad, starting off
with a daunting piano riff before the band comes in. The verses are so solemn, giving
the band space to showcase their abilities with a slow and quiet section. Not to linger
too long though, the explosive chorus and outro show how exactly how a slower song
can be built up. The gang chants of "your sins into me" are immediately hooking, as
the entire chorus is. Favorite lyric: "And now, it is silver and silent, it is silver and cold.
You, in somber resplendence, I hold"
9Girl's Not Grey

I remember hearing this song after having only heard Art of Drowning and All Hallows,
boy was I pissed. This song bleeds pop-rock, something I was not happy with.
However, it an excellent song and is placed perfectly in the tracklist. The verses are
ominous in their delivery, accompanied by not so discreet lyrics that are unfortunately
mislabeled as "emo". AFI sure know how to craft catchy choruses, and this is one of
their best. The bridge is good but you'd expect more from AFI. This is a single though,
and they transition back in the chorus well, so I'll let them off the hook with it.
Favorite lyric: "Swim in the calm tonight, this art does drown"
10The Great Disappointment

I need to reestablish how this ranking doesn't mean I dislike the songs towards the
bottom, as this song is truly epic in the literal sense of the word. However, I do not
find myself playing this song as much as the ones that are before it. The gloomy
mood this song creates is without parallel on this album, and the verses are haunting
like no other here. This song reminds me a lot of God Called In Sick Today but is
heavier and a more conventional song structure. The bass shines on this song, as it
thumps away from the verses. The bridge is outstanding, and the guitar work towards
the end is also above par for the band. Not a bad song at all, but not my favorite.
Favorite lyric: "Soft creatures draped in white, light kisses gracing me. I can
remember when I first realized, dreams were the only place to see them"
11Miseria Cantare (The Beginning)

The best way this album could have opened. The chants and eerie electronic effects
create the desired mood of hopelessness and bleakness. One of the best intros AFI
have crafted. The chants of "Love, your hate, your, faith lost!" is greatly reminiscent
of "though our bleeding we are one" from Black Sails. The verse thrown in is very
nicely done, again setting the bar for what is to come. Favorite lyric: "Nothing from
nowhere I'm no one at all"
12The Leaving Song

Coming in at last place, this song is a slow and quiet break after the past 30 minutes
of sheer emotion. However, it is also a bit of a calm before the storm that is ...But
Home Is Nowhere. This song is fairly repetitive, though for AFI repetition is not a
boring thing. This song does do a good job of reestablishing the theme of
hopelessness and despair on this album. This song is missing Hunter and Adam.
Davey's singing is appreciated though. Favorite lyric: "All the cracks will crawl right
through me, and I fell apart"
