| My Dream Theater Best To Worst
This is their LPs from best to worst, in my opinion.
My listening of Train of Thought spurred it on. | | 1 | | Dream Theater Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory
Favorite Dream Theater album by far, and it is quite excellent. It has some of the best songs, but it also flows excellently. My main problem is with beginning and end. Their too pretentious for my taste. I usually just start with Overture 1928 and finish with my personal favorite The Spirit Carries On. This album and Frances the Mute got me to love Prog Rock. Track Picks: "Home", "The Spirit Carries On". | | 2 | | Dream Theater Images and Words
Excellent, Excellent album. It has some of DT's strongest songs, and it is quite relentless. My main qualm is that it doesn't flow quite as well as Scenes From A Memory. Statistically speaking, it is better than SFAM though. Track Picks: "Pull Me Under", "Under a Glass Moon". | | 3 | | Dream Theater Octavarium
My first Dream Theater album, and it is to me, the peak of DT's second wave of albums (Six Degrees to Systematic Chaos). It is reminiscent of Images and Words at times. What is really strong about this album is that it is the most consistent album since Scenes From a Memory. Track Picks: "These Walls", "Octavarium" | | 4 | | Dream Theater Awake
This album screams 80's prog rock. It is quite good, and has one of the best line up of songs, and it has quite good flow. However, it has less standouts, and many of the songs tend to blend together if your listening intently. Bland at times really. Regardless, great work. Track Picks: "Innocence Faded", "Lifting Shadows Off a Dream". | | 5 | | Dream Theater Train of Thought
Heaviest of their albums obviously, and i think it is quite good, especially since the ending of the album is so strong. Its main weak point is the middle of the album obviously, as it gets a little too wankery, even for my tastes, and focuses too much on the heavy and less on the overall song product. Track Picks: "Stream of Consciousness", "In the Name of God". | | 6 | | Dream Theater Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Least accessible DT album and i wish it wasn't a double album. The title track is amazing of course, but the rest is really hit or miss. Track Picks: "The Glass Prison", "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence". | | 7 | | Dream Theater Systematic Chaos
This is the definition of wankery. There is no passion or feeling in the songs, it just seems DT was going through the motions. Not to mention that i feel DT has lost some of their previous imaginativeness and flare. However, i do like 5 of the songs on the album, its just the other three brings it down. Track Picks: | | 8 | | Dream Theater Falling into Infinity
Bad and uninspiring. Fairly corny and lame. They tried a lot of stuff that didn't work. I was surprised after the greatness of A Change of Seasons. Track Picks: "Peruvian Skies", "Hell's Kitchen". | | 9 | | Dream Theater When Dream and Day Unite
Duh. Worst production, worst songs...largely uninspired. Cover is ugly too.
No track picks. :P | |

11.14.07 | That was weird...Godsmack's Awake Appeared in 4 for awhile. Anyway i fixed it. | Yazz_Flute
11.14.07 | Pretty good list, i disagree with most of your highlight songs (and with octavarium being so high) but pretty good otherwise. btw, you track picks for Systematic Chaos didnt show up, i think you ran out of space. My order would be:
1. SFAM
2. Images and Words
3. Awake
4. 6DOIT
5. ToT
6. Systematic Chaos
7. Octavrium (this and SC are about tied, but SC is a little more solid)
8. FII
9. WDADU | Zoo
11.14.07 | I would order them exactly the same way you did. | botb
11.14.07 | Good list, I pretty much agree with the last 3 though my 6DOIT and TOT would be further up because i love both those albums. | gasmaskman
11.14.07 | I like DT, but I don't have any specific albums, and really don't listen to them (minus the 8 or so songs I've heard)...which would be the best to pick up? From the few tracks I've heard I really like Pull me Under... where to start? | Yazz_Flute
11.14.07 | Get Images and Words then, it's not as long as some of ther later albums, and is their only album (ther than WDADU) under an hour long. It's easier to get into that their others, and has some of their best tracks of all time, like Metropolis and Learning to Live. SFAM is their best though, but is much more complex (though maybe slightly more acessible despite that) | Willie
11.14.07 | I can agree with the number one and two spots, but the albums you have in the number 3 through 7 spots are a little harder for me to order because they all have good and bad points... oh, and I'd switch the locations of 8 and 9. | Jim
11.14.07 | not bad order. i'd have ToT on top and octavarium further down the list | TheStarclassicTreatment
11.14.07 | Yep, my first two are the same and my last 2 (tho in a different order), but the in betweens can be in any order depending on my mood. | Altmer
11.14.07 | I'd put Six Degrees at 3 and Octavarium at 7, shifting Systematic Chaos one up. I might also switch 1 and 2 depending on my mood. Kind of like my thoughts though. | McP3000
11.14.07 | I forgot to mention that 3-5 are basically a three way tie, with preference to Octavarium being the first one i bought. |
