10.04.12 | Do not, repeat, DO NOT rent in Central London. Try to go for a place in the suburbs (South/SW London has some nice quiet middle-class suburbs, while North London is more run-down).
When sightseeing, don't get sucked into the tourist traps. You'll get the hang of sightseeing like a local after a while.
The job market is abundant in opportunities, so depending on your field you should have no problem there.
Oh yeah...and get a tube map, or you WILL get lost. |

10.04.12 | Another pro-tip: watch your spending, or you'll be broke after a week or so. Also, drinks in central London are £7 on average (about $10), so take lots of money on nights out (or go somewhere cheaper).
And remember they drive on the other side (unless you're already British and just moving from within). |

10.04.12 | Try and find a balance between cheap rent and distance to central. I'd advise getting a job first so you know your budget. And don't just try and move to the "trendy" parts of London, you'll pay shitloads for an ironic shithole |
Adabelle
10.04.12 | Rent in London is p high so if unless you really wanna live in the centre you're better off going a bit further out and commuting in (train or w/e) as has been suggested already. There are places with low-rent but I'd check them out thoroughly b/c like probs area with bare crymez. Ummm, I don't remember what else you asked so imma stop here |

10.04.12 | If you are talking about London, England then you may want to reconsider. There is an exhaustive and continuously growing gap between the high-wage workers and the lower-wage workers (which is representative of the staunch contrast between various districts within the city's area).
While England in general is getting their act together more and more by tightening their economy the real estate market was predicted to begin bubbling and magazines like The Economist have argued that they may end up in a similar position as the rest of Europe (which is why the Prime Minister wants to completely exit the Eurozone).
Historically England (just like Holland) has had one of the world's strongest banking systems and that is largely what is keeping them from tumbling but I would look elsewhere for residence. |

10.04.12 | I'm an immigrant here and I'm doing MUCH better here than I'd be doing back in my home country. Then again, my home country is one step up from Africa at this point.
I lived in Hounslow and do not recommend it. I do recommend Twickenham/Richmond, as it is a slightly posher area, but still affordable. Stay away from Elephant & Castle/Lambeth, most of North London, and yeah, the hip areas are just as much of a ripoff as your average tourist trap.
My friend is living in some reconverted warehouses and loves it, but I'd HATE something like that, so yeah - GO VIEW THE PLACE before you rent. And ALWAYS ask about bills and Internet, as sometimes they try and skirt around that unless you ask (usually when there's no Internet or some bill isn't included). Avoid meter-top-up electricity LIKE THE PLAGUE, your housemates will NOT remember to top it up and it will be you going broke trying to keep the fridge working so your food won't defrost.

Yep, I had the pleasure of living with family in London, Preston and Manchester in August. My cousin works at a private bank in downtown London.

Okay, so then move somewhere better. |

10.04.12 | I live in London, for places to stay go east, still some cheap areas and good transport links to city and west end. Eating out can be cheap if you research a bit. Don't talk to people on public transport you will be called a weirdo. um...dont go south of the river, especially elephant&castle or brixton at night and avoid west end on saturdays its too fking busy, too many people here |

10.05.12 | hydora - agreed about the bloody Oyster card - a money sucker, that thing is! I've never spent so much money a month as I did commuting to work every day.
Also, do you work at that Westfield near Shepherd's Bush? I've been there once, I found a football lying around and spent the rest of the day twirling it on my finger and stuff :p |
