Top Albums Of 1970

I'll try to be less closeminded and include albums I don't like amongst the ones I do like.
10Funkadelic
Free Your mind...and Your Ass Will Follow

Was the second album I heard by these guys after Maggot Brain. Not as good as that (their best album) but it's still very good.
9 Deep Purple
In Rock

Might be my favourite Deep Purple album. It's solid all the way through (can't say that about most of their other stuff) and Child of Time is killer.
8 Marvin Gaye & Tammi Tyrell
Greatest Hits

I was reluctant to put a greatest hits album in a list like this, but for my intents and purposes I think it's acceptable. I recently started listening to soul music, and went with this greatest hits and I think it's fantastic. This is a great compilation of songs and both singers are top notch. Should probably look into getting some actual albums one day.
7 Caravan
If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You

I forgot this album on the first go around because I had the year tagged improperly, but this album is awesome. Was my first introduction to Caravan and I never looked back. Some really good songs on this album, but best has to be 'And I Wish I Were Stoned/Don't Worry'
6Black Sabbath
Paranoid

I'm not sure why this album gets so much flak. It reminds me of Number of the Beast, flak because some tracks are overplayed, but honestly this is a really good album. A couple songs drag it down to number 8 (Electric Funeral, ugh), but there are definitely some unheralded classics here like Hand of Doom and Fairies Wear Boots. Also, Rat Salad is awesome.
5Pink Floyd
Atom Heart Mother

I'm not big on the spacier Pink Floyd stuff they released before DSOTM but I've always loved this album. I think it's because the title track is just so damn epic.
4 Frank Zappa
Weasels Ripped My Flesh

Zappa got a tad bizarre on this one, but it's still pretty good. Couple tracks are a bit tough to listen to, but others are absolute gems (Prelude to a Sexually Aroused Gasmask is hilarious and the cover of 'Directly From My Heart to You' is amazing).
3 King Crimson
In the Wake of the Poseidon

I've always liked this one more than ITCOTCK. Don't know why, always seemed more cohesive. The bassline in Pictures of a City is badass, and combined with the heavily distorted squealing guitar riffs of Robert Fripp to start the album, you know you're in for a good time.
2Freddie Hubbard
Red Clay

Fantastic piece of work by Freddie Hubbard, one of my favourites by him. Definitely one of the more accessible hard Bop/Jazz Funk records. He absolutely kills it here.
1Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath

The album that kickstarted the whole Metal genre, and it's never been heavier. The title track is absolutely skull crushing and one of my favourite songs of all time. And The Wizard is absolutely incredible. Couple of the songs are a bit weak, but given it's influence combined with how good it is, it's worthy of number 1.
