| Top Albums Of 1963
This was a really good year for music. Lots of classics released | 10 | | Joe Henderson Page One | 9 | | Joe Henderson Our Thing | 8 | | Miles Davis Seven Steps to Heaven
Gotta love Miles, he just kept churning out classic records with Seven Steps to Heaven. While I don't like this as much as his Fusion stuff, tracks like So Near, So Far, and the title track keep me coming back. | 7 | | Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto Getz & Gilberto
I have lots of Getz's stuff, and I don't know why because I don't dig most of it. However, this album I do like, a lot. Really laid back, great playing by Getz, and one of the most iconic songs of all time. | 6 | | Duke Ellington & John Coltrane Duke Ellington & John Coltrane
Just got this album a few months ago, and I think it's pretty good. I wasn't sure what to expect, whether it was going to be really big band influenced or what. Pretty straightforward collection of some nice Hard Bop and Coltrane lends his hand to some Ellington classics. | 5 | | Charles Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus
This might have been released in '64, I have it as '63 so that's what I'm going with. Anyway, this is another fantastic output from Mingus. He leaves the Third Stream style a bit on this one for more of a Post-Bop sound, but it's still great. | 4 | | Hank Mobley No Room for Squares
I wanted to give this album number 1 just for the title alone. Regardless of that, this is one of Hank's best to be sure. | 3 | | Eric Dolphy Conversations
Another great album by Dolphy. Out There might be my favourite of his, but this is likely tied for second with Out to Lunch. | 2 | | Charles Mingus The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
I fully expect to be lambaste for not putting this first. Honestly, this and my number 1 are probably interchangeable. That growl to start the first track is unforgettable. | 1 | | John Coltrane Impressions
Yeah, I may be a Coltrane sheep, but I like this more than Black Saint. 'India' AND 'Impressions' on the same album? You can't beat it. This is a stunning prelude to Coltrane's masterpiece, released the next year. | |
